Skydive Dubai should I believe the hype?
stratostar replied to Skylark's topic in Events & Places to Jump
That and anybody who is anybody has been there working or comps.... I know a number of people over there on staff and I don't think they would be there if the checks bounced or the place was a dump. Looks pretty and has a hell of a view too. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -

Yea that was one of the coolest things about calling the factory.... you never knew when Ted would answer the phone. I've a had a number of phone calls with him, the first one was a surprise.... he bent over backwards to help me and went out of his way to send me manuals to all his gear.... for free! He also bent over backwards to help me with my tandem gear and get issues taken care of.... if he didn't handle it personally, he made sure the staff took care of it. Rest easy and blue skies Ted..... Thanks for all you've given for so many years, you'll be missed! you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

My point was a student who knows nothing, or hardly the basics has no business teaching or offering advice, training of, supervision of anyone else who is not a rigger as a means of "keeping rental" rigs in the air or to help other students learn to pack. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Should a commercial aircraft be maintained @ commercial part 135 aircraft standards or should 'any person' be able to work on it to part 91 standards or how ever they see fit to "fit it"? The clear answer is, under the current FAR's a smart DZO will have his paid packers holding a riggers ticket or one ticket holder on the mat complying with 105.43, it only takes one fuck up to land you in a world of FAA shit and or bring down on the industry a lot of trouble that need not be. Z-hills @ Perris V, has paid packers, last time I was there each and everyone of them was a ticket holding FAA rigger, it's not that hard to comply with the reg, plus it keep some one working who took the time and paid dues to earn the ticket, I would rather have them looking over my gear then "the lifestyle packer/dz bum" who could care less there is wear on the Y line of a drouge or line trim or the other 1000's of things that can go wrong on a highly used rental rig and tandem rigs. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

In the interest of removing thread drift on an important fatal, I wanted start this thread here and talk about this topic. I have pasted and copied good info here... Tom Buchanan said: captain1976 said: I have seen a number of clueless people in our sport these days thinking they can do what ever the fuck they want to in regards to packing. I've even had a student with a fresh A license try to tell me what tandem rig to jump after "they" packed it.... it was the "club gear" packed without a TI or rigger doing the work or supervising. This same club operates like this regularly and has no riggers on the mat supervising or taking on the compliance with 105.43 They think they are cover because they only have the students pack the mains for their jumps, yet it's under supervision of non rigger ticket holders! You can't teach students to pack by having students doing the teaching or "supervising" the work... or packing your tandems without complying with 105.43 or your risking it all if someone goes in or you get ramp checked/dz inspection.... clearly the morons I'm talking about are not smart enough to talk to FAA field inspectors and would hang the club/ DZ when they open their mouths. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Still using my old flitesuit I got in 1984 for ...... free! Just have to get a new zipper installed... should cost about 35 bucks.... because I don't own or have use of a industrial machine to do it myself...... Damn Billy, check out ebay.... Clearly it is allowed, I'm a AFF -I and have no license other then a D. Oh and I'm a USPA rated static line jumpmaster.... got the card & patch to prove it..... you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Because for the last 9 months or so the FAA has been conducting a national study on skydiving operations and dropzones in order to set new standards to allow access to federal funded airports. It's a given that they will be looking at ALL aspects of the industry and in fact they are, if you take a look at all that has been in the works starting with the NTSB report. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Yepper's A few lone trees are not a hazard, nor is a parked airplane or golf cart - FYI For the record the sims online is not updated and current, the last BOD meet the D license was change to 12 meters and the 50 meters for tandems rules was made. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Go read section 2 of the Sims on setting up a dropzone and the required landing area size. Also read AC 105.2d sport parachuting as to requirements for landing a parachute off an airport property. 1. A license 100 meters to the nearest hazard 50 meters to the nearest hazard for B license & tandems 12 meters for D license to the nearest hazard 2. The property owners permission, that is it's and a NOTAM under some cases. No 7711 needed or a COA nor demo insurance. In fact I can set up a dropzone just about any place I like as long as I follow the FAA rules & USPA BSR's and landing on a golf course might be one of those places that meets the rules & BSR's.... Well you just learned the hard way why a good FJC instructor will teach to flair with your hands into your lap and not to the sides of your body, like you did.... it's a mistake you'll only make once, one would hope. Now the good news.... depending on your cast and how they set your hand in cast... or not... you could most likely still jump. I made almost 200 with a thumb spiked cast on my left hand, there was no issue in being able to pull my reserve or fly a canopy with my cast on, as long as your not in pain and operate the handles. Now the bad news... most dz's will not let you jump hurt without a license. If you were my student, we would talk about it and even try the hanging harness test your ability to preform ep's and canopy control and as long as you could do it without issue, I would let you jump, not everyone will share my view on this topic. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

That is pretty much my thoughts on the subject... not surprising the hear the night jump people in here bitching as well... there are ways for you all to seek out a waver if you wish to both rules. Granted some people have health reasons they can't jump in the dark. But the D-license to earn a gold wings, yes it's a hold over from the day of when many people didn't make it to 500, let alone 1000. It should be a matter of pride to "join the club" and to get there by following the footsteps of those who went before us. D-1, Carl B., Bob B., Bird, Pond.... the list is long and the names are famous, and I'm damn glad to have earned mine and joined the ranks of fellow 5000 club members. BWTH< now days we gotta dumb it all down and have computers to deploy reserves and beepers to tell you when to pull and now we gotta make "special cases" for those who don't want to do some simple shit to get a license and they have no pride to wear there license or patches or wings let alone earn them. Your 1000 jumps is only one part of the requirements for that award, most everyone else had a D long before a 1000 jumps. I have only applied for one license, a D 200 jumps, it was the top dog and you had to have it for PRO and other ratings, I did the work needed to get all those ratings and licenses and awards, I followed the requirements and rules, took the courses, paid my dues. Why should we make exception for you just because you think it's stupid and those who thought up those rules to play by were idiots and you don't want to play ball now. AS ye old Spark man would say: entitlement generation P.S. the young comment had nothing to do with your age, it's time in the sport. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Why is it every time one of you young chumps don't want to put in the time to earn what you seek out to be handed to you and then learn you have to follow rules to play the game.... it's everyone else who is the idiots.... If you want your gold wings then play by the rules to join to club as all other club members have done to earn theirs, if you don't want to, then piss off! you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Mounting a GoPro on the outside of plane
stratostar replied to frequentfaller's topic in Photography and Video
Not much of an issue, unless the FAA shows up and ramp checks your plane and they find it on there.... then you got a problem, depending on the inspectors. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -

DZO's who post classified ads seeking staff
stratostar replied to stratostar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's not this one ad per say, there is always a shit load of them on here, this one I posted is an example of common listings. I'm saying it's stupid, you clearly don't agree, that's all cool, your not looking to relocate to a place of your choice at this time, I get that.... some of us are or could be and have been following the ad on here and find it very old to keep seeing that crap, people are busy, research is good, I can tell a lot of the realistic chance I could go to XYZ area based on location such as: State. If the area is realistic in distance and personal likes, the next set is research on the area, the very last step, for me, is contacting the DZO or dz to apply. Your right, I don't normally bother to apply of inquire these kind of ad's, I find unprofessional in today's skydiving industry to act that way when seeking professionals for hire, IMHO. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -
DZO's who post classified ads seeking staff
stratostar replied to stratostar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That was the point..... a person could post the state, unless your the only dz in a state, then it could any one dz in that state, yet provide enough info for someone to decide if they want to live in or work in bum fuck Arkansas for a season. That is if your a DZO who is worried about saying where your located by city or dz name... regardless pretty stupid to not provide some basic info to the masses IMHO. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -

fair enough, but as dz manger hat wearing person, I wouldn't worry too much about their feelings if they fuck ups and I got to seek out new staff.... it might be the wake up call some of them need before a swift kick in the ass out the door. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo
