New Paracommander owner!...What do you think?
stratostar replied to steve1's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Para-gear had the Gary lewis hand book for a buck for a long time, I think thay still do. As for doing the mod, what do you have to lose. If it slows it down to a MK-1, GOOD! If it don't well there is always water jumps. I'm between 200 and 220 out the door +/- a few lbs. I get nice soft stand up's on my MK-1 8 out of 10 times, I use a rear riser flair, I don't plan on a stand up, they just happen. I will say as I get older I like jumping my jumbo more and more, but I have no problem jumping the MK-1 as a fat ass. ~ you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -
I personally don't and or wouldn't use the car wash way, to hard of of a blast of water IMHO, and it may find it's way into some oil/grease or other fluids from an auto. I wash rigs in the bath tub only, with luke warm to cool water. I start with a good soaking and drain till most of the water starts to run clean, then I use a soft/mild soap and use as little a needed. Then I rinse over and over and walk on it till it runs clean with no soap, then I hang to drip dry a few days. This takes some time to do but every rig I have washed came out new looking and my customers like the job done. I know others who do the car wash and some who put rigs in the machine. I like the hands on easy touch on the rig way. ~ you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

preventive maintenance. While I understand your point as to the rules in the book, I don't see how you would get busted for it unless you do it wrong (some how) and another rigger finds your bad work. If you do it right, I don't think most (95%) of riggers are going to call you on it or call the FED's on you for it. Now should the rig find it's way into a FAA loft run by a FAA inspector, that's another story, but the good news is I can't think of any inspectors who run lofts and do repacks. You could always get a master to sign off your work and CYA, then your good to go. ~ you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

We all still a "ball bag"! Sometimes it takes bigger balls to know when not to do something then to go ahead and do it. I have gotten away parasailing with a PC many times too, but one day it got someone and got them bad, as in never to walk again bad, we all learned from then on it was a BAD IDEA! So you go ahead and strut your young mans ballsack around and talk your shit about how cool you are with your big balls in front of your buddys, and should the day come when you bust one of them up, just remember if your going to be stupid, you better be tough! ~ you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Nope, but if ya have ever flown next to one and seen the rate of decent, you would know why I said that. As a newer old fart I won't jump a comp, I like my MK-1 and jumbo, I don't like the rate of decent of the comps thats all. ~ you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -

Stopped in for a weekend visit, met many very nice and welcoming people and "DZ dog". The ficilities are top notch, clean, well kept, nice layout and a big ass big screen with sound system and disco lights for the after hour fun. Wide open LZ with lot's of outs if you need them. Student rigs all looked brand new and well maintained. Super fast king air with A/C, love the velvet inside. This DZ has a lot to offer, and everyone was way cool and fun to hang out with, can wait to visit again, when your in the atlanta area, this is one place to go jump.

If it's a COMP model your going to THUMP, even if you hit the peas. Might want to trade someone for a MK-1 or RW or better yet a JUMBO! ~ you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -

NOT ! Trying to parasail with a home made canopy is a BAD idea, trying to parasail when you don't know what your doing is also a bad idea. Sounds like a good way to hurt someone, IMHO. If you want to parasail buy a parasail. While a old Paracomander will work like a parasail if it is hooked up the right way, it is still not a good idea, there for I'm not going to tell you how to do it, other then to say again, go buy a parasail. ~ you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

LOL, I say walking to manifest is one of the best parts. All the old jumpers start telling stories and the young jumper can't beleive your going to jump it. ~ you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

We have a few old squares in storage, like a real nice para-plane, but no ones stupid enough to jump it. All of the stuff we like is PC's or knock off's. We are trying to get a thunderbow and a dactyl but can't get the old farts to give um up. The one T-10 we have is set up for freefall, it would be easy to change it to S/L. You need to find your way to the Richmond boogie over labor day and join us for the all round load. ~ you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

No the one we got from you is not in the photos, it is owned by one of the jumpers. One of these days when everyone has their rigs I will photo the second half of the collection, another 17 rigs. Arvel, dig those colors, we got one wonderhog with a sierra set up on hand deploy, 3-ring, lopo. And a second canopy in a bag, looking for a home. Zoobrothertom, No the bellyband I thnk was removed, none of the wonderhogs have the old style. The one in the line up is sweet looks spanking new and is set up BOC,3-ring. Bca, It's a nice H/C. Only one I've ever seen. Tbrown, your right the rigs don't get stored with the bungees tight, do to wear. I know what you mean about the line, it's even better to see all of them lined up. I like seeing them too and jumping the ones I own, it is fun to help other guy's find stuff and fix it, in turn they help others, there are a bunch of people who own and collect stuff to jump, but the dz rigs were stored from the old days and needed some care/rehab. ~ you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

You would be correct, however if you look to the bottom of the container you'll see the last cone not pined, the main is being worked on and the container was stuffed in order to get it to stand up for the photo, the risers are empty right now. ~ you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Many posters here have asked to see some photos of our vintage collection, so here is about half of the collection shot. All but five or six of these rigs in the photos are owned by Steve Stewart. All of these have under gone a rehab and repair, parts replacement type program, most have been washed and the rest will be. Billy webers SST is in repair wash repack stage, almost done. Many master & SR. riggers have built this collection over the last few years. They fix um and jump um. There are four other complete rigs being worked on right now and not shown, for a total at the dz of 20 rigs. We can count another 17 rigs (not shown) owned by jumpers at the dz (the collection builders). Rigs date between 1964-1980. 1. SST racer MK-1 lopo, thanks billy weber

You can do that with any canopy on the market. It has nothing to do with the canopy, and everything to do with the pilot. ~ you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo
