McCoy was a skydiver and a pilot and used those skills in his successful 727 hijack jump. It doesnt prove that Cooper shared those skills but it does show that those skills helped. If McCoy knew Cooper would he have made any remarks about the caper at all? Wasnt it a remark about how much ransom Cooper should have asked for ($500,000) that became McCoys undoing? 377 A day later after posting I feel the same, and more. Carr seems to be believe (or used to believe) that Cooper's act may have been rather spontaneous. I have just finished watching for the first time, Nat Geo's special: The Skyjacker That Got Away. I have a number of reactions, most of them positive. In my opinion, the Nat Geo special is not nearly as negative as people have portrayed it here. In fact I found the special rather well balanced and a good general treatment of the whole Cooper case; something I think will be well-received by the American public. As the narrator says, this case is nearly forty years old. I thought the producers put together a very good general synopsis of the Cooper case and I especially liked Special Agent Larry Carr's contributions. I thought Larry did an excellent job, and the producer did a good job of focusing on Larry's contributions at the appropriate times during this film. From my vantage point I thought his film was a very fair general statement of the whole Cooper case, in the short time space available. I come to the viewing of this film long after reading and even participating inthe various postings of people here who had seen the film earlier. I can honestly say I see nothing trully antagonistic or foolish in the statements Tom Kaye makes during this film. Tom is merely stating one theory of the case which as a matter of fact is rather refreshing, coming as it does off the back of older theories which have been stated before but produced nothing. The theory Tom states, it is clear, is but one theory of the case, in a long line of Cooper theories. It may not be the theory Tom intended to give or would have preferred to give, but it is the theory he gives and he delivers it very deftly, in my opinion. Tom's delivery of the Lewis River theory comes off very well and Tom is to be congratulated, in my opinion. It is very clear to me the producers wished to produce something new and in that light Tom giving the Lewis River Theory makes a lot of sense. That theory has never been given a lot of publicity before, compared to say the Washougal theory which has proven empty to date. The actual historical fact is, the Lewis River Theory was one of the first FBI theories which emerged in the Cooper case just as Merwin Lake was identified (first) as Cooper's landing zone. The Lewis River Theory may in fact be the oldest theory in the Cooper case, if specialists missed or dont know that! The overal thrust of the film is to make people think and to make them aware, and to advance new thoughts in a new generation, and in that light this film makes complete sense and every piece fits, including Tom's contribution, in my opinion. The producer of this film obviously wants to move on and beyond the old canards which have plagued the Cooper mythology for years. In this vein both the Jo Weber and Galen Cook concoctions were passed over, completely. Only the fresh work on Christiansen was mentioned, and then McCoy was shown and covered briefly (and with this I was literally struck by something I had never noticed before). McCoy was covered because as Agent Carr conveyed here many times, 'McCoy was the real-McCoy!'. a real hyjacker, caught, imprisoned, escaped, and eventually shot and killed when McCoy drew down on the FBI at Virginia Beach, the same place Jo & Duane Weber would move to just several years later, where Duane Weber presumably became interested in McCoy and the Cooper story (Jo claims she and Duane knew nothing of McCoy or Cooper at Virginia Beach)! A short film clip of agents leading McCoy away is shown during the McCoy segment of this NatGeo film. At one point McCoy turns his face to camera and I was struck by McCoy's (apparent) resemblance to the early sketches of DBCooper. (That is how this struck me watching). On this basis alone (in my mind) its no wonder the FBI would have explored whether McCoy was in fact Cooper. I found McCoy's flash resemblance to early Cooper sketches uncanny. Looking further, watching McCoy being lead away by agents. McCoy seems to lack the physical stature attributed to Cooper. McCoy seems smaller somehow. Shorter? But the facial resemblence at a quick glance is to my mind uncanny and strong. I have told myself I am imaging this, but it has left a strong impression with me for some reason. We know that McCoys' enduring weakness which lead to his demise was his mouth and his ego. In fact, McCoy told a friend of his that he 'could have done' the Cooper hyjacking. McCoy was bragging about his skills and his intentions. Then mere weeks later McCoy in fact does his own hyjacking employing nearly the same methods Cooper used. (Its no wonder McCoy was caught and the FBI would wonder if McCoy was also Cooper). Now what enteres my mind to ask is: who were McCoy's friends who might have been similarly capable of doing a hyjacking by the same means, and prior to McCoy talking about hyjacking with his one friend who else did McCoy discuss hyjacking with ... prior to Nov 1971? Do hyjackers by parachute travel in a similar (small) group, and could one of McCoy's personal friends have been Dan Cooper? Is there any evidence at all that McCoy or any of his close associates, for example, ever knew about or read the Dan Cooper comic book, over seas? We know McCoy had contacts in the 'educated' community, universities (which may fit the Raleigh and Bourbon profile Carr mentions in the Nat Geo special). Did McCoy have emulators who he might have discussed his plans and intentions with who known to McCoy then beat him to the punch and hyjacked first! If the Mormon Community where McCoiy spent time had something or someone to hide who went missing (on a mission) would the Mormons be capable of concealing the fact? There is a deep resonance in Richard McCoy, for me. McCoy may not have been Cooper but it could easily be someone McCoy knew or who knew him, a soul mate with a similar but quiet disposition. You really are something else. If someone from the FBI had been consistently promising to reveal "the truth" and never delivering, then I would. You can't deflect it that easily Jo. First and Foremost - I do NOT hound the FBI. I learned in my communications with Carr that was useless. Only 2 or 3 times in the past yr have they been contacted. and I did not get to speak with an agent of record.
