"I guess my question really is why do 2 separate programs (Premiere and DVD Creator) need to be told it's PAL? As far as I can tell, the Roxio program re-encodes anyway before it burns the disk. " Okay DVDs are not really my bag but I'm guessing the DVD encoder has to know the frame rate of the final file for playback. Roxio is probably re-encoding it as teh compression systems are different for MPEG ('standard, avi files) and MPEG2 ('standard, dvd files). What I might be tempted to do John would be to make a sample file, send it to your sister and see if it will play, prior to making a big file/ full dvd. It may be that she has a dvd player that can handle NTSC and PAL discs. They are quite common over here. And as someone else mentioned don't region code it. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Why so many jumps before one can fly camera?
nacmacfeegle replied to Skylark's topic in Photography and Video
Actually Andy I think this "rule" is in fact a hard and fast, cast in stone, RULE. Its buried in our ops manual somewhere. For a CCI (our equiv to your S&TA) to grant 'permission ' to jump a camera before 200 jumps takes an issue to be raised at the council and formal exemptions applied for. Pain in the ass to submit an exemption, and I've never seen a successful exemption 'approved'. "we learned the hard, bloody, painfull, and ultimately the dead way." Yep. Thats about it amigo. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. I use Excel, its on my laptop, synched with my PDA, but not here at work. Its easy just use any logbook to get the headings, then use a simple math to get running totals etc. You can embed hyperlinks to video, stills, dive plans etc. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. A cutaway would be useful, some DZs won't let you jump a cam helmet without one. Local rules, and a sense of your own mortality apply. Any hassles with the screen popping open on the PC? or the flash on the SLR? I've seen other peeps (myself included, but I have a bashed up PC that doesn't close properly) using elastic bands to keep the "flaps" shut. Nice work though. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Crosswind video/DVD vs Good Stuff Video/DVD
nacmacfeegle replied to rendezvous's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I reckon the production is better on Crosswind, but the Good Stuff has more stunning / unusual shots and elements. I'd recommend both, but my 'desert island' DVD would have to be Good Stuff. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "IT WAS JUST A THOUGHT" Quality and longevity issues aside, this is a viewcam type camera. It will be difficult to mount on a proprietary helmet system due to its shape, control locations etc. If it takes a firewire stream, or composite video signal into it, it could still serve as a spare deck to gather all the footage from your friends etc, There is nothing wrong with this cam for ground shots, playing in the plane, being artistic, and general DZ nig-noggery. I'd say that the price you paid for it is very reasonable. I don't think I've ever seen a brand new dv camera this cheap before. If it takes a video stream into it I might be tempted to buy it as a target deck, or try to use it in conjunction with a 'lipstick cam', even though some mods might be required. I already have a target deck which could be (and has been sucessfully) used like this, but it cost me about 1200 bucks! Nothing ventured nothing gained. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Skydiving Death vs. Alcohol Death.
nacmacfeegle replied to Kramer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I don't think that is actually the case, the BPA provides umbrella support for various individual clubs centres etc, under an easy to manage ops manual, group insurance, etc. But if say "Bill and Ted" were to open a skydiving centre, and did their own ops manual etc, they don't necessarily have to be afilliated to the BPA.....They would just have to deal with the CAA themselves. In fact I'm sure "Bill and Ted" did exactly that a few years back. But I'm not sure.....which is why I'm asking. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Skydiving Death vs. Alcohol Death.
nacmacfeegle replied to Kramer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Don't confuse 'illegal' and 'in contravention of BPA guidelines'. If I get on the early bird after a hard night, and over the limit (what limit?) will I be charged, fined, face a jail sentence? Not that I hold with 'jumping under the influence', I'm just curious to find out what, if any, 'legal' (as in the law of the land -or air?), conditions apply? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "quick lace hooks that most boots have on them can be potential snag points for your lines. I think this was the Enschede fire, if so... "On 13 May 2000, a devastating explosion at a fireworks depot ripped through a residential district in the eastern Dutch town, leaving 22 people dead and 2,000 families homeless. Total material damage has been estimated at half a billion US dollars." A guy later got 15 years for the arson, if I recall correctly. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "How about thinking what happens when one or more of these things happen: you are low, spinning, do not see the handle, can't use your right hand (how do you pul the main with your right hand disabled? do you rely solely to right hand?) have cold hands or/and poor feel in your hands because of cold or gloves, have a wingsuit on and so on..." Its great that people are thinking like this. However the same argument could be applied to the cutaway pad. I currently (I may change my mind at some point)believe that it is of more importance to get a clean cutaway, so as to avoid cypres firing my reserve into my main shit. So I have a looped cutaway handle, and a soft reserve pad. I think Davelepka summed it up, you have to weigh up your own circumstances and make your own decision. Most importantly you should be aware of the ramifications of your own gear selection, and take responsibility for your own decision making processes. There is no right or wrong in this situation, its all about individual choice.

"I wonder if we'll see homemade versions of this helmet popping up before too long, instead of spending the wad of cash to buy it." Almost certainly Dave, it won't be too long...my biggest concern is that there might be sharp edges that are left, leading to riser damage and snagging concerns, etc. That and the suspicion that people making their own Raks may not be, umm, totally in control of their own flight. I think Bonehead are a little off the mark with this piece of ironmongery. Maybe rethink the requirement to have that amount of plate there, and if flexibility in mounting is the prime driver, maybe have a look at providing a helmet with captive nuts, or cast-in threaded bosses to take plates, strobos, D-boxes, etc.... But then again, at one time, nearly all camera helmets had this sort of arrangement, but with the plate running front to back as opposed to side to side. Modified pro-tecs were all the rage, and at least one very respected camera flier in the UK still jumps a modified pro-tec. Its not the helmet, nor the camera that captures great images, its the flier. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. The Turbolet is a bit like an Eastern Bloc "twotter", Dave. Slightly bigger door, similar climb rate, slightly lower lift capacity. The AN2 is the world's largest biplane, climbs like nothing else I've ever flown in (Grega knows what I'm talking about), and seems to get airborne at just over a fast walking pace, its wierd, but fun for novelty value. Great for S/L despatching, and rough field landings. The best part of it is the noise the 1000 hp Chevsky rotary engine makes when she wakes up in the morning......You gotta come to Europe some time Dude!

HSBC HQ bombed in Turkey- est. 400 casualties
nacmacfeegle replied to dbattman's topic in The Bonfire
I don't think that us Brits are in the slightest bit put off by bombings....look at our resolve to stay in NI for example. Don't get me wrong, we shouldn't be in Iraq, but now that we are, we are there for the long term. Terrorists can bomb whatever they like, and they have done in the past, it won't make one bit of difference. I can't see ANY government giving in to a bombing campaign, whether at home or in ferrin places. If anything, this sort of action will typically strengthen the resolve of our govt to root out the perps. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. I've had a sony Clie for a couple of years. MP3 player (well actually ATRAC3 same as minidiscs) and I can watch downloads from skydivingmovies.com on it too, or even my own stuff!. 11.5 hours playtime on a full charge.
