  1. "why does the author say to disconnect the rsl before cutting away?" Masher got it. "(presumably loop cut by cypres)" Cypres isn't the only reason you could be looking at more nylon than you expected....although it is arguably the most likely cause. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 2. "Falling in love is like skydiving. " Kinda fun, a little thrilling, full of ups and downs, ultimately very expensive....Yep, I'm with you Deuce. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 4. Read what you just typed Gizmo, and tell me those A-levels won't be useful. Or are you taking the piss? Joining the RAF won't really help your Mam, they will send you further away than your local college. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 5. Friday here, been at work for over an hour...which means that I'll be in the pub afore ye!
  6. ***I'm not going to advise anything here Check out this article on the British mag's website.... http://www.bpa.org.uk/skydive/pages/articles/aug03/canopiesout.html Its got some good stuff to consider and help you prepare your procedures accordingly. One thing to watch out for though..."If the side-by-side develops into a biplane, fly it as recommended to the left." instead of 'left' it should read "as described above for Biplane". Somethings don't translate directly from the printed page to a website.
  7. You've tried different cables, of course.... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Thomas Jefferson
  8. "My experience is that getting permission is way too hard." Okay, I basically do what everyone else does-I chance it-, but for what its worth, these people can sort out your hassles over gaining 'permission' in the UK...... http://www.mcps.co.uk/members/ -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 9. All the dust turns to mud pretty quickly over here Deuce! Just thinking out loud, with my 'keep it simple head' on, avoidance being better than the cure kinda thang. I was really blown away by those expensive q-tips!
  10. Dammit John, 'user cannot recieve private messages'. I've pm'd you on your "@iit.edu" address, pm me if you can't get it or its out of date, or whatever.....
  11. It may also help if you shut down everything in the background. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,697,00.asp Enditall does this nicely. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 12. Have a look at this company in Brighton, UK. http://www.dvc.uk.com/index.php They make custom edit setups, they obviously don't have their full specs but it might help you price up a system, or build a shopping list etc. They have links to all the makers of the boards and suchlike.... 13. Sounds mildly annoying Paul, it would be a shame to spoil a great photo opportunity for the sake of a little dust..... So, putting engineer's hat on and approaching the issue from a different angle, is there any recommended way to avoid the dust getting in? I used to tape up my old Hi8 maybe something similar required here? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 15. Are you jumping Slapster? Just before I left, there was talk of opening a Tunnel in the Houston area...Dunno if it ever got off the ground though... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 16. It would be rough justice indeed if the French made a spectacular DVD that won't play on US sets......If you see what I mean Remi.. For what its worth, Good Stuff plays fine on my gear. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 17. For what its worth Zee Dude, The Casios aren't worth a toss, they update too slowly, I've owned them for the last ten years or so. They make great weather stations, and act as a navigation aid when I'm out roaming the hills in typically shitty Scottish weather. If you want to know whether the Suunto will be 'allowed' in lieu of an alti, you'd need to chat with your CCI about that one. I'd be uncomfortable signing you off at flightline if it were your 'only' altitude management device. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 18. "DVD Mpeg comprassion is very high (more compression = less quality) whereas DV compression is much less (less compression = higher quality). " This is generally true, Sharon, however to be fair, the compression systems used by DVD files and regular video files are completely different. 'Standard' mini dv files are compressed in camera at a rate of around 5:1, DVD (and SVCD etc) files tend to have variable rate compression based on a wider range of parameters. "DVDCam footage comes at a reduced quality compared to DV" I would say this is probably true, but I haven't really had a chance to play with any footage from one of these cams. I'd like to be pleasantly surprised. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 19. "Is it difficult to deinterlace it using Photoshop?" Its easy-peasy, lemon squeezy. Make sure your 'export settings' in Premiere have deinterlace switched off. Save the frame, file-export-frame-(ctrl shift F -I think)as a file, then open it in Photoshop, click filters, video, deinterlace, experiment with fields if you have to...edit to add...Quade's link pretty much covers this side of things. I get varied results, but a frame that looks okay in the video preview window of premiere will generally be okay. Its often worth frame advancing back and forth around your pic frame, to see what sharpens up. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 20. "Any other thoughts on this?" Yeah, the British mag just did an article on this situation.... http://www.bpa.org.uk/skydive/pages/articles/aug03/canopiesout.html Bear in mind that a downplane will propel you towards the ground at around 70 ft/sec. Whatever you do, you'd better do it quick.......Or sit back and enjoy the rush, as Derek suggested.. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 21. I think what JeffD is suggesting is that if you have a 2 out biplane, by all means try and land it. If it is a side by side, you should chop it before you get anywhere near finals. eg from the recent article in the mag.. "Flying a Side-by-side Gently and carefully steer the dominant (usually the Bigger) canopy. Leave the brakes of the smaller canopy stowed. If the side-by-side develops into a biplane, fly it as recommended to the left. If the side-by-side does not develop into a biplane, cutaway. REMEMBER: first disconnect the RSL! Only cutaway if there is no entanglement. In the case of smaller or elliptical canopies a cutaway is generally recommended. 22. The town where I was raised.. Arbroath, famous for the 'Declaration of Arbroath' of 1320. http://www.electricscotland.com/history/darbroath.htm...."for so long as a hundred of us are left alive, we will yield in no least way to English dominion. We fight not for glory nor for wealth nor honours; but only and alone we fight for freedom, which no good man surrenders but with his life. " Secondly for its famous 'Smokies' (smoked haddock a rare delicacy). Thirdly for it legendary defeat of Bon Accord by 36-0 in a soccer cup tie . http://www.arbroathfc.co.uk/Misc/36_0_Team.htm Last and not least, The Bell Rock Lighthouse. http://www.bellrock.org.uk/ Just in case you hadn't realised the great importance of these claims to fame...
  23. It should be relatively straightforward to build a pressure housing, with suitable glanded ports for cables etc. Is that the only constraint? Temperature, G-Forces? If the whole set up is bigger than say a portable minidv VCR, are we just talking about a different coloured mousetrap? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
