  1. I can/have driven...Or at least have formal license for... Fork lift truck. Backhoe/JCB. 50t crawler crane. 35 ft sailing cruiser. Motor cycle. Car. I don't need a license for the pram.... Whats a shopping trolley?
  2. Hey Pete, good to see you here! "In my view there may be a case reducing the jump numbers to 100, with the proviso that the jumper is Cat 10, has an audible alti and (possibly) an AAD. They shoulkd also have CCI's approval and have been checked-out/briefed by a suitable person." As far as I know, all camera helmets have to be 'approved' by the CCI, all fliers have to have at least one brief. I think a better idea might be to get someone such as Fordy, or Sward to prepare some 'guidelines' for CCI's to use. Maybe similar to the wingsuit 'guidelines' that Andy helped out with recently. The guideines should consider hardware, as you rightly point out, at least one audible is almost a must, along with an AAD, I'd also mandate a cutaway system that can be operated with a single action/hand. I'm not sure that reducing jump number requirements to say 100, would prove to be popular (with CCIs). I also recall being frustrated waiting to get sufficient numbers to allow me to jump camera. In retrospect, I now realise that I was just not up to it at the time. Either way, I reckon the development of some form of qualification and/or guidance would be a useful start on the road to change. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 3. Dave, not ALL PC style PAL cameras have analogue input enabled 'out of the box'(PC1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 for example), especially here in Europe. There are a couple of options listed in increasing order of hassle:- Find a friendly cameraflyer and chat with them. Approach with beer, and a fair idea of the resolution you require, eg are you intending posting on the web, watching on DVD/SVCD, whatever. Buy 'Camcorder User' and check out the classified ads at the back of this mag. Plenty of professional outfits around that can do this for you. Buy a camera with analogue inputs, (or an Analogue/DV bridge) and a firewire card and do it yourself. Buy a capture card with analogue inputs, fit to your computer, then connect your VHS machine. For the do it yourself options you will need something like Premiere, Media Studio, Cleaner etc. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 4. "some estimates were that he chopped at about 1,800 and was under reserve by 1,200." I think I might have been tempted to pull the ressie...... I can't help but agree with what everyone says here, I'd be on the reserve handle, but maybe the guy was totally aware of what was going on. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 5. "Either the Hague or other UN court, or the Iraqi people should try him. " I'm not sure that the US recognises the Court of Human Rights in the Hague. It is where he should go, its just that Dubbya would have to accept the possibility of say Col West (no offence, just an example) standing trial for 'war crimes' under a non-US controlled judicial system. Trial in a US court...Probably not a great idea, likewise an Iraqi trial. Anyways, there's plenty of time to make up your minds, SH is going to be busy showing us where all those nasty secret weapons are..along with other juicy intel. Both political and tactical I think we should keep him alive, somebody has to go and pick up all that depleted uranium. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 7. "Might have to load it up again and have a more serious play with it. " Premiere 6 onwards comes with a plug in that enables export video for web settings, its a wee programme called media cleaner....It simplifies the resizing and recompression of your videos in a nice easy no stress way. I you are happy doing the main edit in MSP, what I might be tempted to do would be to finalsie your cut in full res on MSP, then export the final movie to the cam, and re-capture the finished product as a complete avi then just drop it on the timeline in Premiere for media cleaner to work on. This means you have a full res backup, just in case, you know..... It also means you don't have to start on the learning curve all over with Premiere.
  8. "They like her, and they didn't go as wild asking questions as I was worried they'd do. I guess it all climaxed as mom and Morgan sat around looking at the pictures in the albums of me as a baby and a little boy" Buggrthat!...The real question here is...Did Mom and Pop approve of the new canopy colour scheme?
  9. "just attempting to broaden my horizons as to contenders for my cash." The FF2 is probably the widest available here in the UK. But you can fill/bridge the gap with tape, line deflector webbing, foam etc..... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 10. "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is a standard typing exercise, it uses all the letters. But don't ask me why its encoded into Word. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 11. Bizarre, quick brown fox on 212 pages. What are those funky Microsoft folks up to now.. 13. Poster print that size in a one off is likely to be expensive. What about an A4 of your face, stick it to some card board, claim your Blue Peter badge , then send it over as a mask..... Easier to post as well.
  14. "If you have firewire and don't need to do realtime editing I don't think a capture card is necessary, but then, I do my editing on a laptop and I don't complain " Franco..your right the video adaptors that allow multiple monitors will not help rendering speed, but working on two monitors makes a huge difference to the speed you can edit at. Saskia nailed it there. The firewire on your mobo will do everything a basic IEEE1394 adaptor will do. If you really must have realtime, then get ready to dig deep. If I were you, I'd play about with Premiere until you know whether the 'proper card' is actually what you want. Its easy enough to pop one in later on. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 16. What I might be tempted to do would be to search these forums for "favourite jumpship" etc, there have been a few threads on the subject. Then cut and paste the unusual ones into a list, then google for images....
  17. You can play with different codecs, they will make a difference, but you can also resize the frames. If you bring the dimensions down to say 320x 240-ish, the file size will reduce dramatically. 240x180 will be even more dramatic. Below that its not really worth watching.... Also check to make sure your sound isn't still at CD quality etc...... Can't help you with MSP I use premiere... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 18. "You couldnt pay me enough to get me on a platform." Aye, and see those folk that do that sky jumping, flinging themselves out a naireyplane at like ten miles and pulling the parachute cord at 200 feet...they are just plain nuts. Working offshore in the North Sea is safer than working say domestic construction. Its just unpleasant. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 19. "I've seen some people with modified ProTek type helmets that shake so badly it's just damn difficult to watch the footage." Deffo agree with you there Paul. The point I was trying to make is this.. it doesn't matter if you bought the bling bling lid, super dooper cams, and a groovy suit, it ain't worth a damn if you can't fly worth a damn. Okay, if the Gun Rak is a serious camera flier's helmet, why doesn't it come with a chin cup as standard? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 21. Been in this game for just under 20 years, I'm into construction, and modification of fixed platforms, refineries, floating production units, pipelines, etc. I look after all safety aspects specifically design of fixed safety systems, and safety in design/ operation. So don't go telling me its dangerous!

  23. Halvor, you will need to tell us (just for starters)... What spec of PC are you using? How much Ram. Disc sizes, are they partitioned? What operating system? Camera model (in Europe some cameras can't take firewire in), Rendering time is dependent of the amount of processing the computer has to do, this will depend on the format of the original footage, and effects/titles etc. No effects should be virtually instantaneous, heavy effects can take days to render on basic systems. What type of card to you have fitted, and is capture working okay? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
