    We used to use Chinooks to fly to offshore oilrigs quite a lot. Then one dark day a gearbox failed causing the rotors to clash,and killed 44 guys, which was lucky for me as I narrowly missed that flight.     "what's a wacker? " Its a curved line which forms part of the formation...named after weed whackers (we call them strimmers over here) Check out the world team site for a diagram of the dive. "what's the APU on the plane?" Auxiliary power unit, its basically a box of gubbins that is used to start the plane engines. "what's the job of the floater? What's the super floater?" Floaters go out first, they exit before the base (core of the formation) and have to 'float' up to it instead of diving down to it. Super floater has further to float up as they signal the exit to the other aircraft. "If 3100ft is the highest pull altitude of the teams, what's the lowest?" Probably around 1200-1500 ft Edit to add... Some of us veterans from the NA thread got a mild forking over this.     "How long can you keep a Mini DV tape until it gets mouldy?" I dunno, I vacuum-pack mine with a little sachet of silica dessicant. I have tapes from '98 that play fine. I live on the coast of a damp, cold, grey island, my house is about 130 years old so its not the ideal place to keep these.

    "PAL is the European format isnt it? and NTSC the US version? " More or less, there are funky variants used in France, but PAL is predominantly the choice in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia. The primary difference is PAL is 25 frames per second. NTSC is 'about' 30- frames per second.     I'm sure I've seen video of Patrick De Gayardon doing this on one of the early Travelling films or similar. I've done it from a S/L to get photos of a students perpective of a hangup. I used a climbing sit harness and a karabiner thru my chest strap to keep me head up. I just cut the S/L with a hook knife.     Not a Mac user but what I do is archive footage to minidv tape, and burn all associated project files(Graphics, premiere PPJ files titles etc) to CD-R. I also trim all clips used on the project prior to archiving, this is simple in Premiere, not sure about FCP.     "to think that we may be limited beyond a 400 way just because of lack of lift power! " I reckon altitude and formation build time will, and always has limited the big ones. I don't know for sure but am pretty certain that exit heights much above 25k will be impractical, above that bail out O2 might be necessary. A few peeps on the last Thailand bash were complaining of hypoxia (anoxia?) effects with exit altitudes approaching 25k. Dunno, anyone else have any thoughts on limiting factors? Landing space?
