  1. No worries Mr2 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3558431.stm Story here, and similar pic also. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 2. "Can't you cut and paste it on dizzy?" Its this snap from the riot in Basra yesterday. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Thomas Jefferson
  3. I do something similar to Lou, but I prefer to work on layers. File sizes get pretty big pretty quickly (PSD format), but you can play with gradients switching on and off layers, etc and flatten the image once you are happy with the end result. This is mostly for my own fun, normally for incorporation into a video. As someone else said, just about any publication will want 'virgin' images. It goes without saying that you work on a copy, but the original is always available as an untouched base layer if it all goes horribly awry.
  4. You need to get a little more experience before you bolt a camera onto your noggin. Most people will recommend a minimum of 200 jumps. Do a search on this forum for all that has been posted and discussed in the past. There are good tips from people who know a hell of a lot more about this than me. "what is a good all'round camera?" A Sony. Whatever model is the hottest around the time when you have another 100 jumps or so will probably serve you well. Current models will be old hat in a couple of months, next year we may all be jumping tapeless cameras, or some other image acquisition technology may be available. Firewire bullet cams feeding an I-Pod anyone? Combined hi res stills with decent quality movie capture? Parasport don't do a bracket for the Z1 with good reason. By the time you fit a bracket, level it off, and strap on a camera, it will be a prime target for riser slap and potential snagging during a cutaway. The camera mounted on a Z1 will stick out a lot more than a purpose built helmet, check out Cookie, Y2K composites, Headshield, Bonehead, RAWA, Hawkeye, etc. Think about how you will jetison the helmet in the event of a snag when your body is hanging from your chin, as you experience 2-3gs during a spinning mal, this is not the time to be pissing around trying to find the wee cord that tightens up the helmet. Not to mention the inherent hassles of maintaining the visor hinge function. It can be done, its just not the best solution available. Before spending any money, time, or effort on this, I would strongly suggest you get more freefall experience, apprentice yourself to a local cameraflier, read everything can on this forum, and discuss your future with your DZ's S&TA. There's a lot more to this aspect of skydiving than you may have considered. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 5. Add to the mix that in the UK, if you are spotting the load, you are probably the jump master for that load. So, adding to the above, it would be good to gen up on things like aircraft emergency procedures, what to do if a pilot chute goes out the door, reserve popped, etc. Learn what the ground to air visual signals mean, there's a whole raft of stuff you will be responsible for if you are assigned as a jump master on a load. Even if you do not intend spotting for a full LET load, its good to consider stuff like this before it happens. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 6. "Is there a special reason that you don't want to use a USB port instead of firewire port?" I have 3 PCs to swap this device around, all are fitted with firewire 1394a sockets/cards/adaptors etc. Going USB2 would need two sets of interface cards. I quite often swap external drives around the 3 systems, and just want a little more flexibility. I'll look into the Sony though, thanks, and thanks to everyone else who contributed.
  7. "The one thing that I think is keeping them from going to $100 a barrel is they don't want people to even consider alternatives; oil is the only resource they've got. " Alternatives also include reaching more local hydrocarbon resources, say deep water Gulf of Mexico, North Atlantic, Pacific Shelf, ANWR, etc. The Conspiracy Gnome tells me companies such as Halliburton, Bechtel etc can only benefit from such activity. The wee devil that sits on my shoulder and says "its all a plot" also points out that any remaining oil, in say Texas, would be worth 3-4 times what it is today. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 8. "Ok, here is a pic of my beautiful pink cast." Oooh, is that one of the new Boneheads? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Thomas Jefferson
  9. "the oil-futures investors are cleaning up. In the words of one analyst. "there's a lot of glee lately." ------------- Every silver lining has a cloud though Bill, a bit of a booboo from Shell today... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3549249.stm -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 10. From one engineer to another, Wendy rocks. My only regret from my time in Texas was not meeting her.

  13. Spain, its where the UK residents go for their holidays. Better weather, better DZs, better food, great night clubbing. Go to Empuriabrava, you will not be disappointed. If you are disappointed, blame Remi. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 14. What about chucking in links to manufacturers, dropzone.com, skydive mag websites, and other online resources, eg Skydive Arizona's excellent safety resource. Maybe snag some of the stuff from the recent series in the UK mag on the same subject. Looks good though.
  15. "you shouldn't be trying to give aid to a broken femour unless it is absolutly nessasery to move the injured (unlikly on a DZ) or if there is a large amount of blood being lost (ie their gonna die anyway unless you do something)." I fully agree MrM2, however the last femur incident I helped at involved a swoop ditch and a low hook. The guy hit the bank and ended up in the ditch. We had to get the guy who had a compound fracture out of the water for two reasons, the water was really nasty, and I was worried about the onset of shock. So it may be more likely than you may imagine. Now then I have a query for EMS pros who may be watching. What is the best way to get a full face helmet off someone after a hard biff / suspected back injury? Skydiving helmets tend to be a bit more snug than motorcycle full face jobs. Removing full face helmets was not part of my trauma training (Coastguards and Mountain Rescue background). Fortunately I have not had to deal with this scenario....yet. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 16. Check out this recent article from the British Mag site.... http://www.bpa.org.uk/skydive/pages/articles/dec03/cutting-away.html For some interesting stuff on this. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 18. "I have to find out the name of it and the album that it's on so I can get a copy. " Its called Elevation High, higher than the sun You shoot me from a gun I need you to elevate me here A corner of your lips Is the orbit of your hips Eclipse You elevate my soul I've got no self control Been living like a mole now Going down, excavation Higher now, in the sky You make me feel like I can fly So high Elevation A star Lit up like a cigar Strung out like a guitar Maybe you can educate my mind Explain all these controls Can't sing but I've got soul The goal is elevation A mole Digging in a hole Digging up my soul now Going down, excavation Higher now In the sky You make me feel like I can fly So high Elevation Love Lift me out of these blues Won't you tell me something true I believe in you A mole Digging in a hole Digging up my soul now Going down, excavation Higher now In the sky You make me feel like I can fly So high Elevation Elevation Elevation Elevation Elevation From "All That You Can’t Leave Behind" (2000) There's another U2 remix (With or Without You from the Joshua Tree) that you will be seeing all over tandem/first jump vids this summer, actually a cool choon called "Take me to the clouds above" by LMC vs U2.... By the way Fun Lovin' Criminals by the Fun lovin' Criminals, and Loaded by Primal Scream work for me, they were used in one of my early videos and I still love those choonz. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 19. Another balanced outlook on things from Michele. I also am interested in what my sky brothers and sisters think. I enjoy seeing opinions from around the world on things like gun control/politics/foreign policy etc. This is, after all, a global community and I still don't fully appreciate subtle cultural nuances, such as gun ownership. But we have covered most of the ground already, and most folk here know where each other stands on various issues. So why flog the horse? The purpose of open debate is to provide informed personal opinions. As long as people keep it civilised and attack issues as opposed to personalities everyone can learn and develop. I also get annoyed when people ask a question, then refuse to accept the answers they solicit. If you don't want to hear opinions, don't ask for them! Less rhetoric and more open discussion would be useful. What is also sad is when individual crusaders continue to distract me from more important issues, such as BOOBIES.
  20. "Reading the S&T forum led me to believe that this message needs to be repeated often, in a more widely read forum." And reading all those oh so interesting political threads in talkback leads me to believe the following message needs to be repeated more often. BOOBIES!
  21. Sunday should have had a capital S, especially in Utah, and the rogue apostrophe in mormon's shouldn't be there. Hold onto that beer Wingi
