  1. "Yet we support Uzbekistan with its torture chambers." Uzbekistan, its not just torture chambers and an apalling human rights record, but also a repressive regime where political opposition is stifled, and the police are a tool of the head of state. If an outside government supports such a situation, they become targets for the freedom fighters (terrorists to you and I) that would strike back against such a regime. The people who take such action don't really care whether it was Clinton/Bush/or even George Washington's government that produced the situation, all they see is a Great Satan meddling in the affairs of their country. The friend of my enemy is my enemy applies equally here. Terrorist action is generally a symptom of some deeper hatred, we must find the cause of this hatred, as well as dealing with the symptoms. What drives people to fly planes into buildings should be the direction of the war on terror, and the answers are probably going to be as elusive as Bin Laden himself. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 2. I think it stays active forever. I just looked up my original moniker which hasn't been used for a long time (2 + yrs) and it still works. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 4. "I'm not talking about being a "camera flyer", but just taking a video camera along on your own jump to record your perspective." The problem is (not aimed at you Nightingale, more to the thread in general), there are many hazards associated with camera flying that have nothing to do with your "intent", and they start as soon as you manifest. You have to include camera prep time in your pre jump rituals, battery, film, tape checks for example. You may have to modify your cutaway drills. Do you know how to get rid of the helmet should it become snagged? Does your helmet even have a cutaway system? Many standard helmets designed for cameras don't have a single action system, for example. If you are filming your pals hopping on board, do you know how close you can get to hot stuff, or things that might chop you into little pieces. How is the helmet secured for take-off, eg if the plane aborts takeoff and has to slam on the brakes, you are probably secure in your seatbelt, but that 10 lb camera helmet makes a great pal bashing missile if its not fastened to something. On jump run, your pals are all getting pin checks, but you may be pre-occupied with checking that the camera is on etc. Hopefully the camera setup you are using is snaggaphoebic, but not all are, mindwarp/d-box setups for example. How will you react to a line snag? If you have a ring sight fitted will it impair your field of view, or affect your depth perception, does the ring sight compund any snagging risks? Are going to be using a wrist alti for altitude management, and have you considered adding an audible. Can you land consistently without biffing the camera? Once landed, don't let dubbing etc take precendence over packing, changing that closing loop and the rest of your gear checks. That said, modern equipment like Y2K's FF2 setup, a protrack and a wee lightweight camera can add to your enjoyment whilst minimising additional equipment/distraction based risks considerably. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 5. I think we're on the same page, Bill. I guess it is bigotry and sexism, its just not that malicious. Have fun guys, I'm splitting out and taking the missus away for a nice easter break. Have a good Easter, stay safe.
  6. "I don't think it's fair, but I think the owner can do what he wants with HIS business" Yep, Bill, thats about it. And if you don't like the way he sells his goods/services, take your business elsewhere. Thats what I call affirmative action. Consumer power. Operating a DZ is a business, just like operating a bar or a night club. "What if it's your only option w/o giving up the sport? Like location and availability." Its unlikely, lets try and keep it real, if its the only DZ around they wouldn't have to use such measures to draw female jumpers, they'd have more or less a captive market. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 7. No, not really like that at all, as far as I can gather a bake sale is not really a regular business, like a DZ. The bakers probably won't have their livelihoods threatened by lack of cookie sales to whichever groups they choose to discriminate against. And the organisers of that particular bake sale deliberately went out to prove some sort of point. "While the bake sale raised eyebrows about its political message, it was a commercial failure. The group only sold about $1.50 worth of cookies. " Some of the gals of over in the Seat Down forum were likening the reduction in jump price for ladies to similar evenings in bars etc. I don't see anything offensive about that either. Its marketing, not bigotry, sexism whatever. The DZO was probably trying to encourage more ladies to jump at his DZ, maybe retain some of their custom, what the hell is wrong with that? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 8. "I think if this is the most important thing we have to be concerned about, we're very lucky." Absolutely. I work in petrochemical engineering, primarily in the North Sea, and a male dominated, testosterone charge work envirnment. I currently work for a woman who is our department head. She is the second female department head I have worked for. I hold that for females to reach an equal position as men in this particular industry, they have to be better engineers than their male counterparts, by a long shot. And there is no real excuse for wage inequity, not in my experience anyways. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 9. So you agree that he should be able to charge $10 for a black or hispanic, but $12 for orientals, and $18 for white - "Or you should go jump somewhere else" Yep, and I would. We are not talking about putting the price up for certain groups, we are talking about price reductions for certain groups. I hold that the DZO has the right to fix whatever price structure he wishes, our right as consumers is whether or not provide him with our business, it really is that simple. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 10. "I didnt know she read dz.com" She doesn't, I keep her chained up in the kitchen, and only let her out so she can lie in front of the lounge door to keep the draughts out. I'm joking ladies, joking...... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 11. "Am I wrong....." Your wrong. "Don't get me wrong I love my wife but there has to be a point when you just have to look at the whole package." I always thought love should be unconditional, or do you love her, care for her, provide for her etc, so that she will be guilt tripped into being a housekeeper, cook, cleaner, child minder/counsellor, quartermaster, and a good wife. What Mama says about trying to get all that stuff done and look after/out for the wee ones at the same time is quite a task, try it sometime. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 12. "but I had also set myself the goal to trim the whole movie as much as possible to the music, and not vice versa, but it wasn't allways possible (i hope this makes sense)." Yeah, that makes sense. Its not always easy, this editing game. I didn't listen to the music because my boss would realise I was not working... "Well, he had enough altitude to stabilize himself, but he panicked" A good reason to wait for more experience before strapping on a camera? (see some current threads on this) I reckoned it wasn't you, the J/S colours look different from your avatar
  13. "Any tips as to favourite DZ's etc?" Where are you going to be staying? Your going to miss Spaceland, I do.
  14. So just so we're straight, what are we supposed to do when we see stoopid data in the wee box over there
  15. I think this is a storm in a tea cup. I think people should have right to charge whatever they want and issue discounts on their own whim or judgement. Cheap tandems for dads on father's day...Discrimination against orphans. Cheap jumps for vets on Veterans day....Discrimination against conscientious objectors. Seriously, the owner of the DZ surely has the right to provide whatever discounts he sees fit, its his business and its a free market economy. If you don't like the way he/she does business, go jump somewhere else. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 16. "The UN is nothing more than a criminal enterprise as is becoming evident." What a risible notion. 17. "there is quite a bit of ugliness in some parts of the world that at some point should be cleaned up by concerned parties" Its the 10th anniversary of the start of the Rwanda genocide, and I can't help feeling we haven't moved any closer to being able to prevent that happening again. It shouldn't be like this. It makes me sad and sometimes angry. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 18. "some of these issues exist solely because of those policys" I wouldn't say solely, but certainly influential, the people of the middle east have long memories. The challenge is trying to pick out where 'we' went wrong and learning from those mistakes. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 20. "American involvement in the middle east pales in comparison to the tinkering that European policies have done over the centuries. Even until the latter part of the 20th century. " Thats a fair point, but that was then and this is now. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 21. Just to reinforce what Phreezone posted, from http://www.makeithappen.com/wis/bios/davisjan.html "Jan Davis was filming the last tandem out of the Otter at Lodi, CA. She experienced a malfunction, cutaway and the reserve entangled with her camera helmet. The tandem master saw her with a spinning malfunction and subsequent cutaway. He reported a 'pilot chute in tow' to impact. The reserve bridal had snagged under her front mounted still camera. She apparently worked on the problem all the way in. She had pulled all her handles. Freebag was out. Some reserve lines snagged the ring sight, and the freebag locking stows were still stowed. Impact was face down. Helmet was off. 22. If you must continue jumping video, and I will not go into that whole experience thing here, I'd stick with the wee spot/target/paper circle. Add a small laser pen which is lined up with the camera, and fixed to the helmet. This way you can at least ensure the thing is lined up on jump run as you cinch down the helmet, switch on stuff etc. Use soft flexible goggles, they are more likely to have a consistent position on your face and are less likely to move as your face expression changes. If you go with a ringsite, fix it with nylon screws so that it might break away in the event of a snag. Ring sights are expensive, save the cash and spend it on your flying skills if you can. For what its worth, generally recognised minimum jump numbers for flying cameras start at around 200. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 23. Your situation gives those of us who take time to answer such queries a wee bit of a quandary. Ring sites are better than a wee spot on your goggles, but a ringsite will add to your risks. Its difficult to advise you to add to a level of risk when people feel you are already 'pushing the envelope'. Dave doesn't want to see you get hurt, and thats about the long and short of it. I'll post a possible middle ground solution back in Flicks and Pics.
