  1. We tried them out at our DZ, but they kept snagging in the packing machine. They were the French whistles, made by Condue. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 2. All you really need to do in such a situation is preface your post with... "Question for riggers (full time tandem masters/certified packers/RW team camera fliers, etc the list is endless) only please" This is quite common and seems to work fine. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 3. Depends on the shape of your face. As JP said the flexvisions fit over my glasses nice and snug. Have you considered prescription goggles? example...http://www.prescription-goggles.com/search_results.asp?type=category&category=goggle&ims=0&iss=1&category_type=all&sport=skydiving -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 4. I'm not sure we actually need this. I've seen the forums self regulating on a few occassions. When someone posts misleading, wrong, or downright dangerous advice it is usually questioned or corrected pretty quickly. Asshats will generally only post controversial stuff in non advisory or non technical forums like talkback. And if you take advice from talkback, then you really need to either grow up, get real, or read the forum disclaimer. I also think it might suppress tips that newbies may be prepared to share, eg the newbie may be unknown but they may be passing on great info from a relatively reliable source. It may also lead to bizarre scenarios where a reliable source in one field may not be so reliable in another discipline. Say Kate Cooper posting about stuff in the camera forum, extreme example, I know but its just an example. No offence meant Kate, I luv ya and you know it.
  5. "It would be interesting to see talkback go away for a year or so and see what it does for traffic and participation in the skydiving forums." I too think it might be interesting to see if the traffic in the other areas of dropzone.com has increased since TB was suspended. Personally I think this sabbatical is a good thing while folk cool off, but its going to get hot again as the US run their elections in the coming months. I'm not sure I could put up with 8 months of Kerry/Bush slanging. Things like gun/religion/US foreign policy threads are as old as dropzone.com itself. Its when people take it all personally that unpleasantness bubbles up, and I don't know if there is an effective way to suppress this in an open forum. It may be that HH could try a "rubber room" forum, if you want to argue, as opposed to discuss, the thread goes into the rubber room, if it gets out of hand, it gets blitzed by moderators, and no explanation is necessary, or provided. The rubber room could be cleared out every now and then, keeping talkback for civilised discussions. If you post in the rubber room you would have to expect that things can get a little wild, and if you don't like it you don't go there. I know this is what the Pub/Chat provides, but I can't access the pub from the work PC, and I actually have a life when I leave the office, so generally don't post from home. I don't know if this will work, or if HH wants this shit on his porch. Its the users that make dropzone.com a vibrant living resource, I think it is a shame that its the users that may break it. I think I saw an Afrikaans word a while back which might sum those users up...Stoepkakkers. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 6. Hey Alan, The tax thing on 'neutered' cameras is true, however all may not be lost. contact Smart DV LTD 13 Park Crescent. Finchley. London. N3 2NL. UK Telephone: +44 (0)20 8346 8023 For advice on hacking (also called in-enabling) your camcorder, if its at all possible. You can also Google for "DV In Enable". There's a pretty strong Dutch forum on the subject, maybe speak nicely to a Dutch forum member to do some legwork for you. For a shiney disc solution, I'd recommend you try out A piece of free software called Tsunami, http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html, this will give you the ability to creat VCDs, and even better SVCDs for burning via a standard CDRom burner. They should play in most DVD players. Finally, once your edit is complete, you could always haul your laptop to Strath and speak nicely to someone (Eddie Jones?) who has a DV-In enabled cam, and hose your footage to DV tape that way. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 7. No, there's no need for them yet Dave, 'old' firewire has more than enough capacity to carry normal DV signals, so I don't expect Sony will be overly keen to tool up for the new system. They have started appearing on external drives, DVD burners, and interface cards though. So anyone buying a new card will more than likely need a 9 pin to 4 pin cable. Saskia said they were using a new type card and drive out in Thailand on the World Team stuff. Yep, I miss Texas, its too damn foggy and cold here. Oh, and we can't get Shiner. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 8. Perennial subject and one that is about to become more confusing, so I thought I'd post this as a reference. Also known as I link, or IEEE 1394a or 1394b. Here is what YOU need to know. Camera to camera transfers normally need a 4 pin to 4 pin cable. or an adaptor (see pics attached). These are currently IEEE 1394a connections on digital cameras in common use. Another flavour of 1394a is the 6 pin animal. The main difference is the size and shape, the 6 pins can also carry power. Next we come to 9 pin firewire or IEEE 1394b. This is the new high speed variety and the connections are different again. New firewire will talk to old firewire devices such as cameras or external hard drives, but you will need an adaptor cable if your firewire card or computer is fitted with the new variety. Longer cable runs are now possible, and like the old firewire you can daisy chain stuff together, eg plug a camera into a hard drive and plug the hard drive into the pooter, up to 63 devices on a single chain. I've attached some pictures to help clear some of this up, Fire 800 is a PCMCIA card with a 6 pin socket and a new 9 pin socket for comparison purposes. Happy connecting. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 9. My opinion, for what its worth from a freeflying POP....who is grandfathered in by virtue of his existing "do anything you want" D licence... Its about time people took responsibility for their own safety, and stop relying on stickers, licenses etc. A license doesn't make you safe, only the jumpers themselves can control safety on a jump. Less regulation, and more education and acceptance of responsibility is what I say. People know who the Zoomie Corky kids are, and they should be realistic about their own abilities to avoid being in dangerous situations. As Gus rightly said, speak to each other folks, self regulate, or we will end up with more unworkable rules. This all works fine in the US without stickers and such like, I wonder why we insist on it over here? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 12. Then again, if the French had backed up the Scots, we wouldn't have had a German royal family on the throne..... 14. Your not talking about an SA341 chopper here are you Gerb.... If so they are very cool choppers. 15. "I think the price is high, but worth it. " Always too high Bill, who are we to decide what is an acceptable price, and who should pay it. If only the politicos were better at their jobs, we wouldn't have to rely on the efficiency of the military. Then again, I've heard it said that the powerful must always demonstrate their power, and that is their weakness. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 16. Its just to the South of Uzbekistan, interesting stuff going on over there...... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Thomas Jefferson
  17. "if it hadnt been for the American men, planes, tanks, bombs, and everything elses the USA poured into the war effort" If you had done it sooner....was my point. However, I'm not attacking the US, and reiterate that I for one appreciate the help provided to us during our darkest hours. I also appreciate the help from the Commonwealth, the Russians, the Free French, the Polish, et al, not to mention the countless members of the resistance organisations in the occupied countries. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 18. As a historian Bill you should know the futility of playing "If and And". EG If the US had been involved sooner, say in summer 1939, the Bltizkrieg might not have been successfull, and France may not have needed any rescueing. What you can say for sure was that the US contribution to both conflicts was significant, and for what its worth, from my point of view, very much appreciated. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 19. It will be an NTSC cam in the US unless you specifically request a PAL model. Pal is used in Oz. http://www.high-techproductions.com/pal,ntsc.htm Warranty issues also apply (limited warranty in the US). It will be an issue if you want to firewire footage amongst your chums. There may be editing issues as well. I've heard of peeps buying PAL cams in the US. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 20. I looked into it a while back, its actually cheaper for me to fly to either Girona (Empuria) or Amsterdam (Texel), than to fly to Lahndahn. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 21. Could you take a couple of cans of vegetable soup, pour it over what remains of your cam, and tell the ins. co that the cutie you are holding in your avatar 'honked' all over it? How closely would they examine the remains? Especially if it was all crusty and nasty when the assessor called round. Hell my wee one burped/honked/peed and pooped his way over countless pieces of furniture/carpets/favourite shirts/jeans etc. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 23. "the first anuual dz.com" Annual means its held every year, so there really isn't any such thing as a first annual blah de blah..... Besides, it should be called the English Boogie, as its way too far south for anyone from Scotland to attend. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 24. "Does the Canon software keep those values when you download the pics?" If you mean Canon's Zoom Browser I'm pretty sure it keeps all this info, date, time, camera settings, and camera name. Its actually not bad as an archive browser, on a par with ACDSee, maybe better in some respects as it can remember image info from say a CDRom. Stay off the auto colour and white balance correction toys though, they are yucky (nods respectfully at Quade). -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 25. "Isn't the ultimate bottleneck the amount of data/sec your hard drive can write to disk?" That was the case a few years ago, read write speeds on typical discs nowadays far exceed those required for video editing. For what its worth folks, Legacy Firewire/I link/ etc is now called IEEE 1394a and ran at 400 mbps New shiney fast firewire is called IEEE 1394b runs at 800mbps. Maximum cable length has been extended to 100m for the new stuff, from 4.5m previous limits. Legacy equipment is reported as being compatible with new shiney firewire, but I believe the 1394b standard has 9 pin connectors so a wee adaptor is required, Belkin make suitable adaptor cables http://www.online-computer-shop.co.uk/e483100.php . -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
