Unnecessary cutaway. Very Dangerous and stupid

That would bring us back to the argument (not mine) that you should fear your reserve? Skydiving is not an exact science! The reserve is there to save your life. Use it when you need it. Don't create situations for its use! Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky." -

I got my new Wings with a 50% off coupon 2 years ago... Great rig!! Best deal in town. At the time, I was recommended to order it to fit a 150 for my135. This (well informed) individual said they tend to be tight. I'm not planning on ever downsizing, in fact, my next canopy is going to be bigger. So it was good advice for me. Wings are great! You'll love it. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

OK... You took some flack, we all do at times. I think people here like to jump on peoples mistakes. However, I also like to think their intent is to make sure we "get it right" and debate the gray area. Don't take it personally! Take it as lesson learned... hopefully, the lesson is learned? -

Retractable Pilot Chutes for Furry"s

Ok…. Here’s the deal. Since we don’t have Lightnings/Storms, some of us old timers are doing CRW with old F-111’s. We’ve attained (thanks TOP.. your old Maverick is seeing action) some good older canopy’s, set up some rigs, and are trying to introduce CRW to the younger jumpers. Some that have tried this have gone on to do “Real” CRW with real CRW dawgs. My question to the CRW community… Who has experience rigging retractable (three ring) pilot chutes to a Furry/Maverick? I love doing down planes but have seen the carnage of tangled pilot chutes. If you have information/experience, please help us out. Is this something that is feasible? Who can do the work? What is needed? Any information would be helpful. Thanks… Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky." -
I'll be there. Hope I can find a Lightning. Anyone have a spare 160 laying around?

Hmmm? Not sure I'd spend the time/altitude messing around. Gotta trust your reserve. I think it's good to mention your experience level and understanding of the equipment. Newbs or lower time jumpers should be sticking to EP's. Guys like you with thousands of jumps may have time/experience to take these more advanced measures. A THIRD drop zone in Houston?
skyjumpenfool replied to ParaHog's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When Joe opened Westside here in the Twin Cities, It became our 4th DZ. Skydive Twin Cities, Minnesota Skydivers Club, Skydive MN and now Westside. This year, Skydive Forest Lake became our 5th DZ. I only wish I had more time and money to visit each DZ more often. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky." -
I did. I watched all I could find on TV about the landings. I was 13. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

I just spent a bunch of time reading this entire thread. PJ_Jumper... If you're afraid to use your researve given ample altitude under these conditions, buy a bowling ball and some striped shoes. You need to have complete confidence in your reserve and the guy or gal (probly not you) who packed it. Good luck in your continued skydiving endevors. Please don't make me update my "Bounce Bingo" cards. @ the guy in the video... Nice cutaway! I'd of done the same thing. In air rigging, even cutting break lines, is not a good idea. -
@ Bill... as long as you blow up your wings and fly uphill immediately, you stay in pretty good position over the team. Plus, you don't get that "turn" in the video as you rotate around the exit over the top that you get in a peal exit. If they delay or get caught in the door.... your hosed. Off Landings and Law Suits.
skyjumpenfool replied to tsalnukt's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
^this!!!! We've been doing that for nearly 40 years where I jump. A group landed way off the DZ this weekend. They all landed in the middle of a plowed field together. The farmer drove out into the field to see if the jumpers needed a ride or a cell phone. Cultivate that "Nicey Nice" in advance! It will pay big dividends some day. I remember a couple years back, one of the CRW dawgs (name withheld to protect the guilty) landed in a large tree to avoid landing in Farmer McNasty's. When you guys give the "stay away from that Property" speech, we listen. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky." -
I recently watched all the episodes of McHale's Navy on Hulu.com. What a great show!! By the way, they didn't make light of war, they made fun of the characters they encountered during a war. RIP.... Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

Then why are we discussing this in the instructor section? I might agree to the point that instructors shooting hand cam is dangerous. Of course it is, that's why we only allow very experienced instructors to do so. However, anyone who has played with cameras during a skydive (any experienced jumper that is) will tell you it's not as easy as it would appear. It's certainly not something for the inexperienced student (or "dead weight" by your definition). As for sticking to the the safety considerations, I gave you one saftey issue in my post above, that alone should be reason enough.

First of all, if you want good video, hire a pro! I think most TI's would want the student paying attention when they give them the signal to bring their arms in for deployment and not busy taking mediocre video? That's just one that comes to mind.... However, all this aside, Tandem students should be learning basic skydiving skills like altitude awareness, plane etiquette, arching, ect. Skydiving videography is not a basic skill. Small steps Grasshopper.

USPA recommends 200 jumps to carry a camera. Stricter recommendations for Tandems. That recommendation should include the Tandem Student. Hopefully, USPA will consider this trend when they turn this recommendation into a BSR. The sooner the better! Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

I agree. I'd even offer that this (landing area recommendation) could be seen as a positive... Do we need a minimum landing area? Um, yah! Pretty much! It takes X amount of room to land a canopy. We need to work with the FAA at this point to establish what that area should be. Are all airports appropriate for skydiving activity? No, probably not. That may not be a popular opinion, but not every airport would make a good DZ. Safety should be a consideration when opening any DZ. I would, however, add that if an airport is not safe (area wise) for skydiving, it may not be safe for GA. The biggest positive here is that the “good old boys” on the airport commissions will not be able to arbitrarily deny parachute operations based on the blanket statement that there is “not enough room”. This proposal will establish a standard to be used by DZO’s and the FAA so we can call bullshit! Those DZ’s that do not meet the new standard may be required to change for the good? This may not necessarily be a bad thing. IMHO as always. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

Ummmm? Did you miss the CRW? @ Twardo... I've always liked what you guys do with an American flag, banners, and spiraling smoke. But, whtn the planes turn on the smoke and spiral around you, well, that is cool. CRW is not new to Oshkosh... Greg Johnson and myself flew a couple of T-10's together over the Airshow many years ago(Freedom Flyers, 1979 I think). Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
