  1. I'd like to contribute to a fund to buy her a second skydive. Show her the difference? Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  2. I've landed a big, slow 270sqft student canopy on rear risers, brakes unstowed. It was hard bordering on impossible to steer, it was so heavy. I don't think I could have managed a 270 deg turn in a reasonable amount of time. I imagine leaving the brakes stowed would not make it any easier to steer. All these "what ifs"???? Back in the 70's, while in a hurry to catch a load, I hooked a canopy up backwards (Standard Cloud). Having plenty of time to play and do control checks, I decided to land it backwards. I got one of the softest landings every...... I also scared the shit out of myself the last 300 feet. My "new" personal policy is to chop any and all shit! My reserve is my friend. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  3. I jump in Minnesota and Wisconsin in the winter.... I'd recommend a good turtle neck instead. Just as much cold wind protection without all the drama.
  4. YES! It would be considered so. But my guess is that your 900+ jumps have given you the experience and ability to do so safely. A 100 jump wonder..... not so much? Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  5. ^^^^ This^^^^^ As I read your posts, I can't help but to think YOU are misunderstanding the DZO's response. The solution is to have a private conversation with those who are "upset" with you. Make it a positive conversation and I'll bet the results will also be positive.
  6. See if she'd be up to a compromise.... Ask her if she'd be willing to go out to a DZ and hang around for a couple hours to watch. Not to jump or to watch you jump, but, just to see what it's all about. Sometimes, understanding extreme sports can ease the fear. ….Then again, sometimes not? Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  7. While I agree that is a potential problem. However I when I tied mine, I didn't want them flopping around. The loop is just big enough to go around my neck, hence nothing flopping behind me. Yes, I do have something around my neck, but if its already snug and not flopping around how is anything going to snag on it? If something still gets that close to my neck and I can't stop it, I need to rethink what I am doing in the air. Hmmm? Maybe someone (Marriah) could post her video of her bridal wrapping her ponytail? It doesn't take much for a dancing bridal to grab hold of. 8. At that point, 7 seconds may be the rest of your life? Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  9. If you have a digital altimeter that can show descent rate, you can get an idea what you are up against by checking the rate under stowed brakes. This formula d = v^2 / (2a) would allow you to calculate the equivalent height to practice jumping off to hit the ground with the equivalent speed, where a is 32 fps^2 or 9.8m/s^2. That means landing under a 20fps descent rate is the same as jumping off something 6.25 ft high, and a 15fps descent rate is the same as jumping off something 3.5 ft high. Do you have a cheat sheet for this formula? I'd like to keep it in the pocket of my jumpsuit with a calculator.... just in case. You know, the reserve is there for a reason. Use it. The bad arm dilema is interesting though? With a bad arm, do you (1) improve the situation by cutting away and (2) can you cut away? 10. I'm not a DZO, but, I do give people thier due SHIT for cutaways... "Hey, Dumbshit, you owe beer"! And, it's always good form to help (EVERYONE and ANYONE) find lost gear. Just pay it forward. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  11. And, they've been trained to do so via a standardized curriculum! Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  12. Why not? That's how I and hundreds of others learned to do it. Based on the number of tail strikes, I'd say that process is broken. I doubt I would have been any safer if I'd had an instructor read it to me. based on the number of tail strikes, it couldn't have hurt. It really just isn't that hard. Based on the number of tail strikes, .... well, this is getting easy? Here's the thing, standardized instruction will not hurt your discipline. It can only make it better. What are you afraid of? .... that's not sarcasm, I really don't see what you are afraid of. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  13. Your are absolutely correct!!! So, since we have no data, let's do nothing. Hmmm? Or, let's do everything and try to figure out what worked (or not) later. At least we will have tried.

  15. I totally agree with the KISS methodology. However, here’s the problem as I see it. In the beginning, some “extremely good” wingsuiters emerged. They got extremely good on their own accord. Hell, they had to since there was no-one to teach them. Along the way, we lost quite a few in the learning process. We accepted that. So, the survivors start to bring on “new” jumpers to the discipline. These new wingsuiters get good at it, but, not “Extremely Good” like their teachers. Now, the “good” jumpers begin teaching newer jumpers who become “OK” at it. In turn, the “OK” jumpers are teaching the 30 jump wonders how to be an expert? This process is broken! Enter…. Standardized Instruction!!! Maybe not a cure all, but it’s a start. Remember, I’m an Educator and speak to this from an edumacation perspective. This is where “Best Practices” take over.

  17. So... You... ride the short bus? ___________ Back on topic, The OP is clearly developing "Skills by Association". Skills by Association is where you’re able to "drop a name" and you instantly acquire the skills, experience, knowledge, and yes, even the Moxy of the person who's name you dropped. This is a very efficient way to generate "Mad Skillz" because you can gain several thousands of jump experience for each name you drop. Plus, the chicks dig it! 18. Hmmm?? I have no dog in this fight. I've been following this issue very closely because my son is flying wing suits. I just really want to see this issue discussed honestly without the usual bullying and BS. I know it’s easy to spin the facts, hell, just look at the current Presidential election. I just think most of us (and I believe the OP sees this) are smart enough to know better. If you (or anyone) want my support, argue your case honestly!!! Present the facts as you know them and be prepared to back up your statements. We’re skydivers, not politicians. Spin… that’s something your wash machine does to dry clothes. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  19. You did misunderstand. I probably did not make my point clear?? Rigger #1 told me that my old Javelin was old enough to drink legally. And, it's his policy not to do any work or I&R on rigs of this age. He went on to say that I could continue to use this rig because it was in good shape (airworthy). However, I'd have to find a new rigger to pack it. I respect his RIGHT to enforce this policy. I'm sad that he won’t pack this rig because I trust him and know he is extremely thorough. But, it’s his policy and I respect that. My point…. Riggers, as I understand this, can choose not to pack or work on any rig at any time for any reason. And yes, I do still use Rigger #1 whenever possible. I also go to others as needed. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  20. I don't think it's a fascination. I'm not a rigger!! I try to find the best rigger I can. Someone I can totally trust. And then, take his advice and listen when he tells me something. I know a very well respected rigger (name withheld to protect Mark ) who told me he would not repack my old Javelin because it was old enough to drink leagally. He explaned, it was in good shape and probly be ok. However, "this is his policy". I have that rig packed by another rigger. It's now used as my back up rig because Rigger #1 convinced me I should start looking for new gear. Advice I took. As I see it, from a non-riggers perspective, any rigger can refuse to pack any gear for any reason. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
  21. Robin, The title of your thread is "Aircraft insurers do NOT support "standardized wing suit training via USPA"" In all fairness, that is not what I read into this e-mail. My take is, they support anything that eliminates tail strikes. Nowhere does he say he "does not support standardized wing suit training. I'm hoping we can agree that training (correctly implemented) could be a good thing. If you're concerned about how this training might get implemented, get involved... run for a board position and help shape the solution. Proactive involvement trumps misdirected bitching every time. 22. Seriously???? It seems to me, personal attacks are not tolerated here. Someone please ban this guy for a couple weeks. And, by the way, Sandy's point is valid because both the 110 and the 150 are so similar (bottom card access). This paragraph of my post is being omitted so I don't get banned...
