Skydiving and the brain
skyjumpenfool replied to PlaneTrouble's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No! It's all good. These skydivers you see were all like this before they started jumping. -
... he got there in 6-9 months depending on which part of his post you reference, and his profile states 2 years in the sport. Hmmmm.... Anyway, welcome to the sport. Just remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

New guy here... How dangerous is this stuff?
skyjumpenfool replied to TrickyMike's topic in Safety and Training
My favorite thing to do is to ride the ZX11 out to the DZ.... Double the fun but the risk factor is exponential! Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky." -
With well thought out Standardized Curriculum, absolutely yes! In fact, I'd pay to sit thru your class, especially if it's taught by someone "trained" and qualified to teach the course. Why’s everyone so dead set against learning. And please don't respond with the old, scare tactics, bureaucrats are bad, conspiracy theory argument. If I want to hear that BS, I’ll just turn on my TV anytime between now and the Election. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

And I challenge YOU to make the case for a new USPA bureaucracy with evidence and not just opinion. Oh, I did that before and you admitted you have none. As did you that it wouldn't work to 'fix the problem' you admitted exists... We both see a 'problem'...I see a fix. Even if it's a "possible" fix, I'm with Twardo. In this case... DZO parks a car in the middle of a big field. Cessna passes over(Low). You have to spot, and toss the pupkin at just the right time. The goal is to do damage to the car below. Great fun with a long standing tradition.... Sounds easier than it is. I don't believe anyone has ever even come close. But I could be wrong. Good advice above ^ But, I'd add that this is an extreme sport and, as such, is not for everyone. If you are not enjoying yourself, what's the point?

Does your DZ try to guilt you if you have a cutaway?
skyjumpenfool replied to -SK-'s topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You must be very popular at your DZ?? However, I like to think that "Skydivers" are better than that! When one of us is struggling, the rest of us help! I've been around this sport for probly longer than you've been alive. I can walk onto any DZ in the world, and I'm always welcomed with open arms!!!! This is a community we're talking about. You lose someone's gear, you take responsibility and Man-Up. These (DZO in this case) are our friends and brothers in sport. Respect and friendship are the only requirement for membership into this community. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky." -
Ummm? Your link above is from the "El Dorado Municipal Code" Just between you and me, it doesn't mean shit anywhere else. Is there an FAA law, USPA BSR, etc.? I'm going to a well established Pumpkin Toss next weekend. I hope this is not the end of an Age-Old Tradition? Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

My step daughter, who has a real teaching credential, has to do more continuing education than the entire pedagogical content of a USPA coach course just to maintain her qualification to teach in a junior high school from year to year. Let's not get carried away with the idea that a USPA coach course teaches how to teach. I'm required 120 clock hours of related professional development to renew my teaching license every 5 years. In return, I move up in pay scale to reflect this advanced understanding of teaching practices. If we're going to start these analogies, tread carefully..... We've all seen that video... sky, ground, sky, ground, sky, ground. Not a lot to learn from there? Or, find an experienced camera flyer and ask him/her along on your next jump. Most will be happy to come along. I even try to do this on my coin when possible. They'll capture footage you can learn from and you'll be proud to post on YouTube. Take this opportunity to ask this "experienced" camera flyer about your future flying a camera. My guess is, you'll once again have an opportunity to learn. When you have the experience to handle camera flying, start out slow and seek out more help. When I started jumping camera, I sought out a guy with over 10,000 camera jumps. I bugged him with questions for over a year. I still seek opportunities to learn from these people. You should do the same, but I'd highly recommend you leave the attitude at home. I hope this advice was touchy-feely enough for you. Oh, and the packing analogy…. Layout and start packing your reserve parachute and see what kind of advice you get. But, be warned, it will NOT be “TOUCHY-FEELY”. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."

It's Pronounced 'Stiletto'
skyjumpenfool replied to craigbey's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Nobody takes responsibility for anything anymore! It's always someone elses fault, or caused by some unknown or percieved entity. Man Up!! Oh, by the way, I love my Stiletto. It opens beautifully. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky." -
very very experienced wingsuiters.... who may not have been trained properly? Herein lyes the problem. And this is a problem that we can fix. Again, I'm not a wingsuiter, but I am following this discussion closely. Here's what I can bring to this discussion; being extremely good at something does not qualify anyone to teach it. Teaching is a separate skill set. This, by the way, is why instructor courses spend so much time on "teaching best practices". I'm on the fence about a WSI rating. I would, however, really like to see a standardized curriculum delivered by qualified people. Good discussions here so far!!! Thanks. green light does not mean GO!
skyjumpenfool replied to dreamtoy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I agree in sentiment... but, ultimately, it's my decision to jump or not. At that point, the decision to exit (when cleared by the PIC) is mine! I also take full responsibility for that decision. Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky." -

My guess is… you're the kid in class caught texting a friend while the teacher was explaining an assignment. Clearly, that Phone rule did not apply to you? So, you got all bent out of shape when the teacher took your phone away. Now you’re the 100 jump wonder who's trying to rationalize her desire (it’s probably already a decision) to jump a camera (before you're ready) in the same manner. You were WRONG in English class, and you’d be wrong in skydiving. And, that’s what experienced skydivers are trying to tell you. But, of course, you’re not listening because your too busy texting you’re BBFF. Experienced jumpers are not trying to “keep you down”. They’re trying to keep you alive long enough to make a couple thousand skydives together. Don’t take it as a personal insult when you don’t “GET YOUR OWN WAY”! Earn the Privilege to Play! That would make it as safe as riding the back seat on my ZX-11. I still would not recommend it??? Birdshit & Fools Productions "Son, only two things fall from the sky."
