ohhhh that is so rough... best wishes to the Child...his parents and all (human ) family members... I have never been a dog person... I don't dislike them,,,, I don't like them, I am mostly neutral about it and figure, People may do whatever THEY want.....to each his own.... but when I hear of a dog which "snaps" at a child,,,, It tears me Up....such a senseless thing... yeah yeah yeah "man's best friend" and all that stuff.......... never bought into it... sorry. Man's best friends should be OTHER people and family members... we did have a couple of dogs, over the years... as I defferred to the wishes of the kids.... but mostly they tore up things, barked a lot and absolutely resisted attempts to train them ( the dogs, not the kids ) ....must be they were smarter than me... anyway.... an attack which requires such intense surgery is simply unforgiveable.... I hope the boy heals fully as do the parents, but the dog gets NO sympathy from me,,,, whether it is a cocker spaniel, pit bull terrior, Golden retriever or chihuahua...... it needs to be GONE, sad....... it seems EVERY time such a thing happens, the words are... "their dog has always been so gentle.".............sad..... I have a new "nephew -in-law" who proudly showed me the bite marks on his head/skull from when the family pet bit him as a youngster, and now that they have a newborn, 3 months old,,,,, even now,, he says he will continue keeping the 2 adult dogs which he's owned since ,,, "before the baby ever arrived"..... seems to me this kids priorities are messed up but I'm "Just an old Uncle" so what do I know?????... good luck to all... jmy -
try using the camcorder as a bridge only.. don't put a tape in it,,,, power it up in vcr mode... rca cables out of the vhs deck and into the same port you output from the camera ( as you point out, the camcorder WILL accept that input from the vhs vcr).. Only then instead of trying to "record" the footage to mini dv,,,,, run it right to the computer via a 4 pin to 1394 firewire cable..... Press play on the vhs deck,,, just keep the camera in vcr mode only, but don't press play, OR record... and bring up your computer software which captures video footage in real time... I have had success with this approach and use a Dell dimension 9150...it works with a direct to disc program called SONIC.... then I CAN duplicate the original dvd as many times as i want... of course that would be with a Non-protected VHS tape ,, to begin with..... Hopefully that can work for you.... Now if the VHS tape was recorded with some type of anti-copy protection, it may or may not work, since the copy inhibit signal is coming initially from the vhs tape, not the camcorder.... ( I think ) good luck. jmy............ o[:-)

I've jumped at many different dzs . and most are similar in that any HUGE number of people can be on site during operating hours. Between Locals, visitors, students and their various "entourages" sometimes hundreds of people can be milling around... Now many places "close down completely" after dark....The DZOs say,,, "Ok we're done for the day,,,, you don't have to go home,,, but you CAN'T stay here...."... bad idea... IMHO Other places allow for onsite camping, RVs and bonfire type activities... ( and ALWAYS,,, someone or two people seem to stay entrenched there, till the sun comes up....) Is your DZ a place where Everyone Leaves by midnight or 1 or 2 AM ???? If so, your DZ and all others like it, - need to be vigilant about 4 and 5 AM interlopers. thieves. scoundrels,,,, skydivers ( I hope Not ) or others,, who possibly have cased the place all day long, scoped out what is where etc etc, and return under the cover of darkness with tools to break in,,,,hell a crowbar, bolt cutters, or even a cutting torch, can be easily used , if there is no one around to monitor the place and be wary....Iv'e never visited your DZ but was just wondering if what I described is possible... Better to allow trusted jumpers and staff to stay on site 24 hrs/day, whenever the daytime activity level is high...in order to protect against such nightime intrusions. either that or have the local camera gurus set up some type of surveilance cameras,,, and then NOT... I repeat NOT make that information commonly known to ANYone.... "C'mon Mo-f&%k ers... you wanna Play?????? " "then lets get to it"... (nothing like a recorded tape to Incriminate the cleverest crook) Thievery of any kind is Foul....and losing ones rig is just heartbreaking... May all the gear be recovered and the bastards prosecuted... sadly this is further justification to keep your personal gear with you,,,at all times...post jumping.. I.E. in your locked vehicle or in your locked home, rather than in a DZ hangar, locker classroom etc. even if you are staff, even if it IS the weekend, even if you are going to jump it the next day... gear that is worth more than the van i lock it in is worth being careful with... good luck...to you and the others. jmy

Great... i recall reading the forum posts where skymama mentioned Peter's generosity in making his home available to Andrea and her children while they visited.. How COOL is that???!!!!!! nice to see that they made it to NYC safely... While it might or might not be a 'white Christmas',, at least the temps. are mild and so sight seeing and getting around will be easier and safer.. happy Holidays to aLL!!!! Let us know if and when they might visit the morning Network shows,,, NBC studios are at Rockefeller Center.... and we can look for them on tv.... Welcome to the great state of New York... enjoy the shows.. jimmy from Upstate..........

What is the scariest part of the skydive for you?
jimmytavino replied to mattyblast's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Nothing is "scarey" really... If it was scarey, then why do it ??? maybe a long time ago there was some nervousness, But since I was never in a plane til the day i jumped out of one,,, I have soo much fun looking out the window and grinning, that there is no time to be wasted, being afraid.. -
twisted Up... (It took a while, but these line twists DID clear) good thing it was on an AFF video, (last group out) and pull alt. was above 5 grand (long spot ) If I had pulled at 3 grand,, I would have had to chop it... jimmy

Has anyone learned or taught to skydive in a very different way?
jimmytavino replied to Calvin19's topic in The Bonfire
well sure... that sort of stuff happened 30 or 40 years ago... usually after a night spent sitting on a barstool somewhere... Too much booze mixed with too much machismo, mixed with a dare or two, and voila' next morning somebody is 'lending' his protege' his 4 pin pioneer and 28 foot 7 TU and up they go, and out the door... tumble tumble tumble pull!!!!. the cheapo works as advertised, the newbie, hopefully doesn't break everything from his hips down, and the mentor..thanks his lucky stars that he danced around manslaughter charges... -
"Not a problem.... please turn in your computer, telephone, tv and radio to the local authorities - you'll have to find the town crier to get the weekly broadsheet for your news. After all, the Founding Fathers never meant for those things to be included in the First Amendment. How could they if they didn't even exist!" "please turn in ...." Happily... I believe I can do just fine without all those modern conveniences.. honestly.. many of those things have only just complicated life, here in the 21st century... I believe life as it was 200 years ago WAS healthier, happier, saner, simpler, though certainly, much tougher and more challenging.. But I personally am quite well suited to that sort of life...( i often think I should have been born 200 years ago,,,,,,but then there'd be NO skydiving ) But I do have skills in building, agriculture, Parenting, and the willingness to work... to sustian myself and my family. I have an appreciation and respect for nature, for the planet and its resources, for God and for my fellow man..and for livestock and wildlife.. Together, with a partner just like my wife of today, we would do just fine..... hahahaha ( think "little house on the prarie" ) Many people today are so dependent on these technologies that they literally, would be lost without them...Face to face communication is a dying art. There is so much TRASH flying around the TV and radio systems and of course the internet,, much if which is unverifiable, flat out untrue, or a potential negative influence on many many people who see it... Who needs to hear the news instantly??? not me, especially when it is often bad news, or news about crime and violence, greed and hatred.... The town crier can provide me with the local news, whenever He gets around to it.. and I'd be satisfied with that... I could give new meaning to the term "old school"... fact is,,,, I have never used an ATM machine, have only fired a hand gun or rifle less than 5 times in my whole life, and have fared just fine thank you, nonetheless.... and so..... you are correct that these modern conveniences, Tv computers, telephone and radio,,, just like automatic weapons and high powered munitions, did not exist then. Can we then make the assumption, that the first amendment is also flawed,,, I e Out of date ,,,as well????? If so.... you have further reinforced my point, thanks

sure.... enforce the laws then..... problem is .... that is very seldomly done in a consistant and equitable way, sad to say. The poor and desperate defendants stand a much worse time of it, (regardless of guilt or innocence) than do the wealthy and affluent defendants not trying to negate anything.... but trying to take a more realistic and modern-day approach to this issue.... For sure,, things in the 21st century are waaaay different than they were in the 18th century, both in terms of weaponry AND mankinds' behavior towards one another... Not really sure what the solution is.... But in many cases, guns and their ease of availability are part of the problem jmy

Ok so if firearm ownership is argued to be protected by the US Constitution, so be it. NOW... where does it say that 'ammunition' ownership is also protected???? when that document was written over 200 years ago, wasn't gunpowder and lead balls still the fashion?? If our Forefathers ARE rolling over in their graves, I bet they'd be amazed at the huge variety of technology, machinery and ammo clips, now available to the general public...... IMHO the NRA as well as most all weapons manufacturers, and many "overzealous individuals" have pushed well beyond the 'spirit of the law' by advocating possesion of extreme weaponry, here in the 21 st century... and yes,,, any weapon , including easily concealed handguns, which can fire multiple rounds in quick succession, qualifies.... Humans have been on this earth now for a couple of million years and got by just fine for over 1,998,000 years, defending home and hearth from predators, wild beasts, and territory seeking fellow humans, without guns. The potential for guns to "protect us" may be genuine, but it's "value" is far outstripped by the destructive characteristics which these implements have demonstrated over and over and over again....(senseless acts of stupidity and brutality, "accidental" deaths caused to children AND adults due to improper handling of guns, false sense of courage and bravado on the part of some gun owners, which leads to crime and misuse of said gun) We can't seem to do much about changing the "right to bear arms" so lets simply consider a new law ,,, which effectively bans bullets ( no kiddin' ) I am not anti-hunting, nor anti target shooting, but I AM anti-death... especially senseless unjustified death...at the hands of some 'desperate and lost soul' struggling to make it in certain urban situations where guns, legal AND illegal, are much more abundant than the common sense of those who are wielding them... signed, peace seeking jimmy

bear in mind that with a plywood base and roof shingles, the nails will show through, from below.. even 3/4 inch roofing nails could be a problem... and for durability and wind resistance, the longer the nail the better... what sort of rafter framing is needed for the metal roof??? How wide are those metal panels??/ 32" ??? nice framing on the deck and posts, it looks like you understand the benefit and technique of Notching the posts,,, as well as sufrace bolting the connection points. looks good.. Looks like you might fit a couple of good sized ice chests on there ,,,,, no problem...

Maybe.... same nice smile...

Thanks guys, for the info. i've been following the saga since they had trouble pulling it free from it's pier, back a few months ago.. every so often the newspaper would have an update about it... I Saw it up close a few times, but have never been on board... The airplanes caught my attention but the vessel earned my respect...

Best Way To Get $$$ To Jump
jimmytavino replied to iluvtofly's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
some good suggestions here regarding 'skydiving' related ways to get money,,, but there are also Non jumping ways... Spend less than you make..Stash money in a cookie jar or a coffee can. Money which you saved , by NOT buying a new CD or DVD or video Game... Pack a lunch rather than "going out" for lunch,,, ( I Know I Know,,, BORing.... well sitting on the ground at the DZ while your pals are getting in the plane,,,,, THAT'S pretty boring too.... -

Right. Howie Martin ran Seneca Falls in the 1970's and in April of '76 my logbook shows my jump #'s 469 and 470 made outta a Dehavilland Beaver...It was dark blue.. We jumped it alot that summer and Howie brought it to other nearby DZ's for meets. I had my # 1 reserve ride at a meet in Wyoming County NY,,, from that aircraft... ( cutaway a french pap, with shot and a halfs,,,, minisystem container) It was used for S L students at Sen Falls, ( using direct bag/ T-10 gear... ) If i recall correctly, two students would SIT in the door,,,, side by side,,, The JM would send one, then the other... I got my SCR from that plane in June of '76 and we did lots of 8ways from it... Though we seldom went above 8,500 feet..... That plane was there into 1979,,, and then "the falls" shut down..... There was an incident which i witnessed during an accuracy meet, where the plane stalled on jumprun,, at 3,500 feet. !!!! i was on the ground... I think the plane was just going too slow and it fell off to one side... Some people near the door .. GOT OUT !... a few of them pulled their mains and some pulled their reserves....The plane did one or two quick turns, and the pilot somehow, got it squared away, and pulled out maybe 400 feet A G L ... a couple of people up in the cabin could not get to the door,,,,,, and good thing,, since they would have hopped out toooooo low... the pilot landed, the plane was checked out, and I think we finished the meet with the 182s... Another time a T-10 ripped the horizontal stabilizer off the tail and then cleared... The stabilizer fluttered to the ground and the plane was safely landed.... Another guy in the Syracuse NY area, ( bobby grandinetti) flew a yellow or orange beaver, hauling jumpers for a while as well, in the late 70's... had to get outta THAT one early one time,,,,, on John Kings' ( Finger Lakes Skydivers) 1000th jump,,, when it blew ALLL of it's oil onto the windshield @ 2,500 feet... hahahaha.... Only time I have ever had to make an " emergency exit..." Thank God for twin Otters.... jmy SCR 6190 nscr 1817

....very interesting... not unlike the "hairy-scarey" sorts of things which DO sometimes occur... My beef would be with the video guy... In an effort to get the footage on TV he sits in a hangar and "embellishes" the situation. making somewhat overdramatic assumptions and statements... as a cameraman,,, I have seen nearly as bad,,, during an RW funnel..... I hope all were ok...

Have You Ever Fudged YOUR Jump Numbers?
jimmytavino replied to katiebear21's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I laughed when I read your poll choices!!!!! never fudged jumps cause i always thought the idea of a log book was cool.... a mini diary of sorts.... so I always knew just how many jumps i had made...
