Encourage friends to jump..?
jimmytavino replied to timbarrett's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Excellent topic... I often encourage people to "explore what it takes".... to make a jump... Provide access to DZ's ( phone #'s web sites, driving directions etc. ) and then it's UP to them... I ask such friends or acquaintences to let me know if they have made an appt. for a jump, and then try to be there to share their excitement. I steer them toward tandem as a first jump experience, but Never push... No one dragged ME by the hand for MY first jump.. It is something that a person needs to do on their own... I would NOT ask anyone for a phone # or Name of "next of kin"..... hell No. Those details are covered at the point of registration/ waiver..... and it's not sensible to assume that responsibility yourself.... ( plus you could inadvertantly cast a negative spin on that persons' "adventure", before it even starts, with such a request...) I would urge all excited novice , intermediate and even experienced skydivers to refrain, from dragging someone out to DZ, even IF it is with that persons willingness. This activity should be entered into by the individual, of their own desire.. There will be plenty of time to share the happy occasion afterward, with a hearty handshake, a wink of the eye ( Now they know what we know) and a cold one... enjoy..... stay safe. jimmy A 3914 D12122 -
I agree... great interaction between the cast members. They play a "weird" but loyal family.... They stick together even through disagreement. and sadness... Good dialogue, good acting... NO computer generated special effects, No explosives, No over the top action sequences, (tom cruise, eat your heart out ) good acting, an amusing story, some interesting twists and turns, very satisfying, at least i thought so. i give it a thumbs UP and 3 and half stars... Looking in to setting up to shoot video...
jimmytavino replied to Ragnarok's topic in Photography and Video
fair enough.. well then THIS is a good place to start. Just about Every question has already been asked, and all have been answered, some "ad infinitum" No problem with asking...ANYthing.. only sometimes we might NOT like the answers.. the subject of equipment is complicated,, Cameras change, models come and go, sometimes within the course of a year, Improvements seem to be constantly introduced. Costs change... some models are good for skydiving, some are not...etc. etc. So it is fortunate, that these forums are loaded with good advice, insight , suggestions, and tips. Many many posters here have Thousands of video/camera dives.... keep looking through the post threads. There is plenty which can be learned..... Meanwhile, fine tune your "in the Air" abilities. For now, take pictures with your "minds' Eye".. Learn to move safely in the air, gain aerial awareness, and think toward the time when you may add a camera... By then the prices might be lower and/or the quality better... .......Delayed gratification can be very , very satisfyingIn the sport of skydiving... Patience is rewarded Often , injuries are avoided. Those who have a year or two experience, and who are the most recent "devotees" to a truly wonderful sport, merit the appreciation of all the more long term jumpers out here... For they are the new energy, new talent and new friends with whom we share the climb to altitude and our love of the sport. We welcome novice and intermediate sport jumpers. Those who are persuing licensing . But perhaps they should start thinking long term... years... ....Instead, (sometimes) they get so wrapped up in what they see around them , that the want to quickly get to that point, which took others sometimes dozens of years,,, Look around at your dz.. see many people who have dedicated decades to the sport.?? I bet you Do. Perhaps some of your instructors. Long term...So consider leaving some accomplishments for later into your career.Build one layer of ability on another. go at a pace where you CAN learn, and then fine tune on every jump...whether it is Freefly, Flat Fly, Canopy piloting, Instructing, or Camera work... Learn carefully, be safe, grow your abilities skydive softly, skydive often, skydive with friends jmy...... A3914 D12122..... -

I saw a commercial about this episode but missed the show. Maybe it will air again. I get the idea of matching speed with the car, and it looked like the approach would be from the side...and from the rear...( Similar to attempted landings onto a boat) Was he successful??? how many attempts were made?... If he did not connect with the car, how were the landings??.. and where were the landings??? If he DID connect with the car, was the plan to release his main at the 3 rings??? If so.... how did that work? If not, did the car do a sudden deacceleration??? before the main induced a sudden deacceleration on Mr. Cani. I recall reading that Luigi Cani had landed a really small main canopy... REALLY small. like 29 sq. feet

last year our club established a waiver form which needs to be completed and signed by ALL parties involved,, the TM, the tandem student, the Videographer, ( if applicable) and the solo swooper.... If ANY decline to sign, then it's a no go. Our tm's and camera people know that they will not be faulted, if for ANy reason, they say no... though we try to be sensible and accomodating Of course that doesn't assure ANYthing... Safety is # 1. It seems to me that to dock on a tandem, a jumper must either be, a TM, An AFF I a cameraperson (well experienced)... A fun jumper who I would OK to join us, must be ... someone with waaay more than 250 or 300 jumps,,, whose freefall abilities are KNOWN to me, ( I shoot video), someone who is cool, and ALWAYS under control, and someone who is significant to the student.. i.e. relative. spouse, close friend...IF a visiting jumper regardless of their jump #'s comes to the club with a friend who is making a tandem jump and wants to join.....They better REQUEST , rather than DEMAND to go along...and they must demonstrate a cooperative, and proffessional attitude, or else I would stand down from the video rotation. Chasing a tandem simply because there is " no one else to jump with" on the load,,,, does not work for me.. sorry, but all it takes is one person who gets, UNDER the Tandem or OVER the tandem, or worse yet ( from my point of view ) Under the camera... for me to dislike the whole idea...( and it's happened ) A swooper, IF allowed to join the skydive, MUST stay within view, of both the tm and the video...dock on level and from the side.... No sneaking up from behind, no heavy momentum docks, no erratic flying, AND the swooper MUST GO !!!!!!!!! when it's time to go!!!!!!..(usually well above the tandems' deployment altitude.) let's be careful....

Best camera? Help me to choose one plz!
jimmytavino replied to Lexxxa's topic in Photography and Video
it may be best to buy your friend some skydives, instead of " a camera for skydiving". I wonder WHO he might be taking videos of.... you and your buddies??? hahahaha It all depends on his flying abilities, time in freefall, and to some extent number of jumps. If he has under 400 jumps or so, a "camera for skydiving" may not be wise. Skydive safely in all situations before donning a camera ( distraction factor) ( at least at first ) Are there very many freefall videographers at your DZ??? what do they use??What experience level do they have? If you want something for ground footage, or to fire wire footage from aerial cameras, sony has always done the job. Stay with mini-dv, or even better HDV, avoid direct to cd recording. The model you choose, must have lanc port and firewire port. you can learn more at www.sonystyle.com I don't know about samsung. jmy..... -
One of the effects of tandem jumping for the first jump experience is that people start to look at DZ's as if they were fast food joints... "We want to jump, we want to do it NOW, and we can't understand why it would take soooo long for this skydiving operation to accomodate US " ... the general public fails to realize that THEY are merely " Guests " at what is often a private airport. Surly or impatient first timers , sometimes need to be "briefed" on how things work at a busy, safe, and active DZ...And when that happens, they sometimes react in such ways... Getting upset, verbalizing their unhappiness, storming around, asking to speak to "your supervisor".. etc etc.. In those cases it sometimes makes sense to tell them about the OTHER DZ they might try... It also works both ways... IF a person calls a DZ and inquires if it is possible for 2 or 3 or 4 friends to "make their jumps together", and IF they are told "sure, no problem".. then they could be justified, in feeling upset, when the game plan is changed. STILL that is no reason for abusive and rude behavior...Proper communication between staff members is essential, especially at a bigger DZ, where there are more staff people... . If these 3 were "walk -ins" they should have been more accepting of the circumstances. If someone told them previously, that they COULD jump together i.e. be on the same load,,, then the dz staff, should have been apologetic, or maybe even made an attempt to call IN a TM who might be nearby, and available, and who could get to the DZ quickly..... Tough to say who is to blame. But this has always been a sport, Leisure time activity, recreation , a place to go to get AWAY from day to day yahoos...... when they come around , treating a dz like an amusement park, and thinking all they need to do is drop a credit card on the counter, and get whatever they want... they can be told, "go open your OWN Dropzone"....

powerfull post. a must read. death of any kind is never good. a life given for priciples believed in and given honorably by a soldier is worthy of great respect and gratitude, but at the same time it is a tragedy. We are in the next millenium. If world leaders are still resorting to "wars and battles" in an effort to create Peace, then surely something, ( or more accurately many things ) are wrong. Any recall of men and women who have already served at least 2 years of service, and have honorable discharges, must include the option for that veteran to decline... I wonder what percentage re enlist and what percentage say, ' no thanks'.... Will this impact Frank Schaeffer's son? and how does the entire family, as well as the Marine, feel about it? skydive softly, skydive often, skydive with friends jmy

It's About Time: H'wood Execs Fed Up With "Petulant Brat" Movie Stars
jimmytavino replied to a topic in Speakers Corner
Yes. valid point regarding Mr Woods... he "creates" his own prestige through long hours of work, practice, concentration and Patience with the general public.....so kudos to him,,,, even though society does NOT NEED a guy who can hit it 325 yards, or can work his irons like a paintbrush.... still HE is amazing. Now as far as Tom is concerned,,, There ARE "more than one Tom Cruise"... they are named, Nicholas Cage, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Kevin Spacey, Robert DeNiro, Gene Hackman, Johnny Depp ( OOOOO I loooove That Johnny Depp... He make-a me cry!!!! ).... etc etc... While it's true that these actors Do have to learn lines,, and "hit their Mark" etc etc... There are just as many Undiscovered superstars who might very well be,, far more intelligent, more accommodating, more generous, more humble...... yet for one reason or another,, Never WERE,, in the right place at the right time.... Don't get me wrong.... I have no animosity to these gentlemen (or gentle lady actresses), and God bless 'em for their good luck and good fortune in life..... But to elevate them to the stature that some of them command,,,, just doesn't sit well with me.. Now I LIKE movies just fine,, I am entertained by them, distracted by them,, and in some cases impacted by them.... Only the actors, are the least important part of the equation. The story, the script, the technical expertise needed to create them,,,,,,,THAT is why I go to the movies... I still contend that many many many "never yet discovered" actors, if given the same script, director, or agent,,,, could just as easily BE Tom, or brad or Nick or Kevin.....I have met many many people , even sometimes on a dropzone, who have the personality, brainpower, ability to work with others and the demeanor, to fill many many of these roles, played by the so-called superstars...... The ones we know about , simply had an opportunity given to them, and they made the most of it....But that does not make them worthy of millions and millions, and millions more......Often that sort of income leads to silly public behavior, or a sense of "aristocracy" or the misconception that whatecver they say and do will be accepted with open arms by the general public.... That is where I become resistant.......especially when their behavior , attitudes, and public statements are off the wall....jmy
