It's About Time: H'wood Execs Fed Up With "Petulant Brat" Movie Stars
jimmytavino replied to a topic in Speakers Corner
Actors, musicians, and even to a certain extent, athletes are basically "artists".... that is.. they create 'something of interest' to the general public, be it a film a song or a sport event... NOW what ever happened to the concept of "the Starving Artist"???? you know.... like it was for thousands and thousands of years.... Over most of history TRUE artists Painters, writers, sculptors, lived in relative obscurity, often poor and penniless, sometimes battling terrific personal demons, and often Under appreciated in their own time. Many of the GREATS, only become 'great' well after their deaths, and after so called critics, began to make a big deal about their works... However in this crazy world of today,,, relative "nobodys" become famous, wealthy AND pampered over what is often Talentless behavior... They were just in the right place at the right time. ........ "you complete me "... how romantic.....when uttered by Cruise ( J MaGuire).. Fact is somebody ELSE wrote those words, a HUGE crew of behind the scenes technicians recorded them,, The gullible general public spent millions at the theater to hear them,,, and there are probably a thousand people within our own jumping community who could have uttered them,, just as effectively as Old tommyboy.... Yet he and most ALL other actors, get paid millions and millions,,, and live a lifestyle which FAR exceeds their 'contributions ' to the well being of society in general.. I wonder how many of these self proclaimed artists would offer up their "work", without assurance that they will be financially Compensated well well above the value of what they do... The REAL artists in this world are the community leaders, teachers, parents , and hard working public, who put in regular 40 hour work weeks, for what amounts to a pittance in pay..... All these other 'entertainers' while sometimes amusing, and moderately of interest ,, really do little to enhance the quality of life... In fact it can be argued that many of them ,, corrupt, and detract from the quality of life,,, ( example, hard Rap with cop killer lyrics, and overt sexual innuendo).... starving Artist???? Not in this day and age...........So it's no surprise that money hungry studio bosses are becoming resentful of lots of the players who help make their movies. If those actors and actresses were being paid based on the reality of the Value and necessity of their "work"... then movie tickets would cost a dollar a person...... Disclaimer.............. while some of these Stars are guilty of my stated premise, I will admit that there are some who do step Up and use thier influence and Money to try to help with the "troubles of this world"... Just as long as they get good "press coverage" and publicity from it........ kind of SAD -
Greetings..... well friend, here is some wisdom,,,, If you're looking for cheap, take up gardening.... I also am in Rochester NY... a great place to live, work, study, and Not bad for skydiving either... The $$$$$$ spent on your recent trip to hawaii could have gotten you well into AFF, but at least you did get one skydive out of it... I'm curious as to the altitude of your jump??? and whether or not you jumped at a place which caters mostly to the tourist business, or whether the place also has experienced jumpers.. Around here,,, My vote would be for Frontier Skydivers, located west of Roch by 70 miles or so, in Niagara County... Great people, the BEST student gear available, hugely experienced staff... I started jumping there as a visitor/guest in the early 70's and became a member, by the early 80's. Now I jump there almost exclusively,( and contribute by working as a video person...) save for the occasional visit to Finger Lakes Skydivers, near Ithaca, to visit old friends... Frontier is currently using a King Air however and Not an Otter.. Consider yourself invited to visit so.... # 1 you can check out the place, and # 2 so we can check YOU out...... Beyond a first jump experience, there is a TON of information you need to learn.... Some of it ( instruction, gear, lift tickets,) WILL cost you $$$$$..... But there is much to be learned, which is cheerfully shared between experienced members and newcomers to the club... and at No charge.... other than the willingness on the part of the student, to listen, take direction, follow safety procedures, ask questions, and "play nicely"..... You can P M me for travel directions. Skydiving in this part of the country, during the Autumn months is just gorgeous.. .... Congrats on your jump # 1...may it be the start to a fun and rewarding hobby...

Do you jump with an AAD? (turned on)
jimmytavino replied to Mr17Hz's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yes.... NOW my main rig does has a cypres ( the second rig does not) I got one about 4 years ago, after 30 years of jumping without one. Used "old style" AAD's for my static lines, then,,,,on my own. I got one only when their reliability had become more or less proven. Now. all my buddies who grabbed them when they first came available, are moaning and cryin' cause they are all hitting their 12 years... I'm still good to go for 8 more. never understood why someone would jump a rig WITH an aad, but insist on NOT turning it on. Oh well to each his own. -
what is the condition of the grommetts on your slider... are there any nicks or deformities,, which might be grabbing the lines,,,,, rather than "sliding" past???? " I'm not a rigger.. But I DID stay at a Holiday Inn Express a while ago"

To some degree your AGE and the ages of your friends factor in...For many men their first apts, or places to live ( after they got chucked out of their parents place,,) tend to take on a dorm or frat house style, especially if there are 3, 4 or 5 roommates... Whats best for everyone, is self sufficiency.. If you're getting on into your 20's it could be time to find a nice One person apartment... keep it nearby to friends, places of employment, and places you like to frequent..... But have the apartment, to return to, find peace and quiet, Or else ROCK the rafters,,, with your choice of music.. Sit on your own couch... with a grin... Your Pals.. "wally and the beave" were inconsiderate to you in the planning stages,, and rude to simply "announce to you " the changes..... .......I am one of 4 brothers born within 5 years of one another,,, ALL Italian,,,hahahaha and with strong bonds. But we sure couldn't live together..... Beware of those brothers who can. Sounds like the vote will often be 2 to 1 against you and that will damage the friendship you have with the one Bro'..... Save the friendship, get your own place. Live Cheap... if you have to,, select a place you can afford,,, and not just a place you WANT..... good luck

" Hey !!!! this isn't how we dirt-dived this....I'm outta here " !!!!,,, shrieked the Cat, as his teammates expressed their displeasure at his early departure "
-
"The 3 lady sit-flyers were just completing their docks on the raft,,, as the cat, in a stand - up,,, began to signal "break-off"
-
...Saaaay..... isn't that the Blue Sky Ranch runway ???? ..right behind you????? as long as you have pals who can get you to and from the DZ..... who needs a car???

Well SPIT Them Out!!!!! ALL of you... STEP AWAY FROM THE OPEN BAG>>>>>> you are surrounded..... there are sharpshooters and helicopters with surveilance equipment trained on you as we speak...... We will not tolerate any refusal on your part.... Think of all the lovely sunflowers who gave up their lives to fulfill your Botanical Compulsions, and gastronomical Wants and Desires...... stop !!! before ALL the sunflowers are GONE forever!!!!!.... what kind of a world will we HAVE... without sunflowers???!!!

With the utmost faith that the 8th frog WOULD at some point, DOCK on the formation, a bunch of crazed "toads" hummed it down, well under a grand, last week, in front of the lens of this newspapers' camera. It was later reported that 4 of them croaked !!!!!!!! ........
-

-
right right.... I'm sure there was an explanation of why he's without a rig.... my concern was,,,,, why is he so NEAR to the door.....????? but i suppose it's his choice... I think I'd stay well clear of an open door, if I was not tethered, or belted, and was without a rig... carry on...........
-
re: post # 17 and the picture,, 'too crowded for a rig'........... WTF????? Isn't that kinda silly...??? I can see being way up in the cabin,,, especially a sweet customized cabin like the pictures show,
-
can't say.... one way or the other about such things... BUT I do seem to recall a CRW team that went by the name of... "Them TOAD Suckers"...
-
started out with 5 static lines,, then went immediately into 5 second delays, 10 second delays etc... At the time a minumum of 5 SL jumps were needed,,, which demonstrated stability and on #'s 3 4 and 5, the ability to pull a "dummy ripcord".... So I did the minimum and was cleared for "skydiving, instead of just parachuting... That was about 10 years before tandem jumping and was nearly back in the days before Tandem Containers.....Which was another name for "piggyback rigs"... So never made a tandem til last summer.... I could not jump cause of a shoulder dislocation and so a friend who is a trusted TM invited me to go on a tandem with him... "well" I thought, " I absolutely WILL".....

Do you like this month's Parachutist cover photo?
jimmytavino replied to lewmonst's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No... But i really DID like the month earlier which showed a composite photo ( i think ) of a guy swooping with a T -10.... THAT was pretty cool... nice way to show how the sport has changed over time...
