Ever wonder what it would be like to skydive from space? SEE THIS!
jimmytavino replied to quade's topic in The Bonfire
wow pretty cool ....so then,,,, these boosters have a "hand-cam"?? Dd I notice what appears to be the "launch plume" off on the horizon, as the booster rocket is falling??? How did the other booster stay in frame during the early part of the fall.? Is that camera able to be remotely controlled in order to pan and tilt as needed??? Looks like the 'cypres' worked.. It was cool to see the other booster land, as well, How did they stay so close to one another???.. aren't they just tumbling during re-entry, or do they have some kind of guidance controls, built in?? thanks quade... jmy -
timing and foot placement are important, especially if you are Not ON the tailgate at exit. misstep and it could negatively impact your exit, and the exit of those behind you. I try to look down at the floor so that my last stride, is of the right length to put me right where I want to be, as I leave... But then get your head UP and anticipate a "dead spot of air" for a second or so, till the propwash grabs you and blasts you away from the plane... Be there for the aircraft briefing, even if you aren't on the first load.. Smile and have fun.... Casas and Skyvans are great jump ships... skydive softly, skydive often, skydive with friends

Does anyone remember the term 'zoomie'?
jimmytavino replied to waltappel's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Since I was usually in the base ( fast faller) I never qualified as a zoomie... But I sure have witnessed a few, been bombed by a few, and done my best to avoid a few.. "Kamikaze Relative Work".... capable jumpers need not apply. -
Yay You !!!!!............... is right.. 101... !!!!!!!!!!! very good. I had a science teacher in HS.... back so many years ago,, that i can't believe i remember it. but she used to say. "hard work, rich rewards"... seems like that applies to You. keep up the good study habits... jmy

stolen log book, what can I do
jimmytavino replied to davidpanal's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Reward for Return............... these words should be posted prominantly in more than one place in each of your logbooks... If they are Lost or stolen, they really are of no use to anyone else... if lost, and then found,,,the finder who returns it is entitled to some sort of reward. If they are stolen.... the lure of a reward, could draw the thief to you, and maybe help to recover other things which were taken... either way... it can't hurt... It might also be a good idea, to only keep your most recent logbook with your gear / in your gear bag.. those logbooks which are full ,, and which represent your past history, are safer if kept in a secure place at your home... just my $.02......... jmy -
How long has it been since your last reserve ride?
jimmytavino replied to peckerhead's topic in The Bonfire
yes....I recall the cutaway you did at the Frontiers' batavia boogie.. I helped to chase down the main, which landed directly ON the airport perimeter fencing, (8' tall chain link with 2 strands of barbed at the top ) . One of Art's guys climbed and carefully cleared it.. a little at a time I gathered it up, from gound level... BUT !!!! I missed the actual cutaway, even though I knew you were on the load,,, Others also missed SEEING it.... ( must be we're easily distracted... ) Maybe if you take with you,,, one of those air cannisters with built in airhorn,,, or a helluva loud whistle,,,, you could sound it, loudly,,, 10 or 15 seconds before you cutaway.... whatever amount of time it would take to re stow it first, plus 3, 2. 1 .... is that sensible???. For sure, everyone would benefit from watching. jimmy............ -

Most interesting out landing?
jimmytavino replied to Hazarrd's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
we were making water jumps one hot summer weekend .. mid Seventies...did it a couple of times a year so people could qualify for Licenses.. and lots of us jumped each time. Well I missed the Lake !!! a BIG one tooo. hell its 40 miles long and 4 miles wide..... But i landed OUT in a gravel parking Lot... The wind was perpendicular to the length of the lake, ( N/S ) and the spot was well west of the western shore Some of us were jumping 28' cheapos, ( student gear) so as to NOT soak our own personal gear,,,, and we exited too far up wind,, and i never made it back to the water.. The 'drive ' on a 28 ft cheapo is more like 'neutral" or maybe even Park I mighta' had a chance at a downwind splash in the shallows... but saw a couple of dozen wooden docks, none of which looked inviting... I was barefoot, had no helmet, wearing only cut-off jeans and the rig... so i got a 180 turn done, settled in behind some big pine trees and PLF'ed Big Time... As a sheriff car pulled into the parking lot, I was already hightailing it Outta there,, down to a dock where one of the pick-up boats was pulling in.....After getting the gear into the boat, they promptly tossed my ( previously DRY ) ass into the drink..... mmmmm barefoot PLF's into a gravel parking lot...... hahahah and THAT was the BEST of my options.. back then I was mad at One of the OLD guys, who left me hanging on the strut for about 45 seconds,,,, !!!!! while He worked his way out the door,,, and while we were getting further and further from the spot!!!. he had a Jumbo PC and made the water..... Now I'm older than HE was !!!!!! hahahaha it's all about perspective... gotta love it... jmy -
Interesting read (new dropzone issues)
jimmytavino replied to Rdutch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
true enough lawrocket true enough... property owners should have their rights respected and what we used to get away with, we no longer can.... Hence the byline,,,,, " no longer crazy " Todays canopies can get a jumper back to the dz 9 times outta 10 and as long as this neighbor is identified as an >ABSOLUTE NO LANDING AREA -
.... a real good friend had been hurt in an aircraft.....a month earlier and I was preparing to head to her home to install a wheelchair lift unit.. ( mini-elevator) in her garage. ( it's what i do ) the news was on before I left for the 40 minute drive... As I was on the road, the words came across the radio,,, " the tower has fallen " shortly thereafter, the other fell........When i arrived at the jobsite, I exited the truck and sat down on the ground, for a few minutes, stunned.... the rest of the day.. was little more than a mechanical dance through what it was we had to do to allow my friend to safely enter and exit her home... a tiny tiny accomplishment on a day of great loss, sadness, and heroics..... the dz was shut down the following weekend ... FAA orders...... and it seems nothing has been the same since.

based on what i have read about raven reserves.. i'd keep looking. Are they not a brand of reserve that has more than once, stalled out on the flare...?? effectively 'dumping' the already overloaded jumper ( having just dealt with a reserve deployment/ main Mal. ) to the ground... MICRO raven???? i don't think so... and i concur with the point about the F 111 main. for sure bring the whole rig to a rigger whom you know , and get a trustworthy appraisal

hahaha my thought too. sounds like a Farmer McNasty... on steroids. Someone should brief him about "bad spots" years and years ago,,,, THAT would have been a challenge to me and some of my "balls to the walls" " no cares in the world" buddies. We would have all thrown a dollar into a helmet and had a "mini-money meet". to see who could Land ON the sign..... signed, jimmy,"no longer crazy after all those years" tavino -
Is static line any fun?
jimmytavino replied to NoWorriesNIkky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
no worries NoWorries Static Line will allow you to lay out a relaxed arch, with your head up, and hopefully allow you to see the plane as you leave. 3,000 feet is OK... remember, you're not booking through that altitude at terminal velocity.., as you would be if you exited at 13,500... ( in that case, sure,, 3,000 is low)( especially for a novice) But you'll be under an open main, likely above 2,500 feet. What kind of aircraft??? are you doing a "poised exit " from a step?? or a seated exit? It's best if you can exit facing Uphill relative to the propwash... lay right out into that relative wind and ENJOY !!! I did 5 static line jumps on each of my first 5 airplane rides....what a hoot. then On to LONGER DELAYS!!!!! -
cremation with very specific requests for the scattering of the ashes... Some in the peaceful woods behind the home where we have been now for 20 years. Some at the property of the home where i was a youngster. ................My Dad was raised there from 1929...He Built a 2nd home on the land in 1951, next door to my grandparents home, took his wife, my Mom, there from their honeymoon 55 years ago.. They raised 5 kids and still reside there. ( as for the old line, "you can't go Home"...In my case and in the case of my siblings, we CAN,, and try to, at least a couple of times a year ") ( hahaha I can sleep in the very same twin bed i slept in, when I was 10 years old.!!!!!) ( I always have Great dreams when i visit there..) The place has a Great back yard, we had a helluva baseball field, a creek in the back, woods, NO neighbors, so we could scream and holler all we liked... Some scattered at my parents' Church cemetery, where all 4 of My grandparents are interred. Also there, are 3 uncles, a cousin, and eventually others who are near and dear to me....Those "older generation" family members, for whom cremation is not likely... And so.... speaking of near and dear,,, if a small portion of the ashes can be dispersed from some altitude far above my home DZ, as a token of my affiliation with the place, that would please me. My wife, likewise has chosen dispersal of ashes in more than one place, including the property near our home, so that WE remain together, in at least one place on this planet... Hopefully allll of this is still decades into the future...

Do you think the video footage of Irwin's death should be shown?
jimmytavino replied to SkydiveStMarys's topic in The Bonfire
I never knew there to be a 'video' of this incident.. but I do seem to recall seeing the Photograph back when it was first printed,,,and seem to remember that a slight puff of smoke was captured on film....coming from the handgun. (tough to see in PLFXperts attachment) THAT was what was so impacting to anyone who saw the image... back in the days before "frame grabs"... jmy -

"but it's hard" it's only hard for those who are unwilling to make the effort. follow the path you have chosen, impress yourself with what you can accomplish. Which I sense might be the way YOU live your life, M.. An adult who tackles college often has a much better success rate than those recent H S graduates who are simply 'following the path from H S to 'higher education" like a flock of sheep. i think you will prevail, at least i hope so. best wishes. study hard.. jmy

Do you think the video footage of Irwin's death should be shown?
jimmytavino replied to SkydiveStMarys's topic in The Bonfire
no i think i'd be in favor, of destroying the film/video and would do so, If i shot it. no good to be had, by keeping it. only further heartache for those who are/were close to Mr Irwin A friend and colleague of his, was on national news, here in the US this morning, and said, he "would never look at it again." (sidenote) what has been reported is that the Poison on a rays barb can induce pain and physical discomfort, but is not often fatal...Did he make a serious mistake by removing the barb thus allowing the wound to his heart muscle to bleed. could it have been a different outcome if the barb remained as a Blockage to the bleeding,,,,, til they got him ashore...??? i dunno... How sad... -
