Yes. I happened to turn the tv on,,, just in time to see the piece... which included aerial video from above,,,,, of a slow speed malfunction,,,, which. WAS NOT CUTAWAY!!!! wtf????? she absolutely dealt herself that 'hand of cards' by NOT chopping that mal...... ( There was plenty of time and altitude to do so...) and i have to think her rig was RSL equipped,,, so even though she apparently froze.... she still could have chopped anywhere near a grand,,,,, and had a reserve....... Then they go and play up the point about her being pregnant, which was actually a non issue until after they got her to the E. Room... oh well... more fodder for whuffo critics.... I was particularly galled, when she said..*** " skydiving is a selfish sport".....*** well so is Golfing, Tennis, Hunting, Skiing, and just about anything , for which a person develops a passion...... What is really selfish..... is a woman who parlays her own mistake and her own inability into some twisted sort of 'celebrity' simply because she 'didn't die'... Why didn't Robin Roberts ask her.... "why didn't you PULL YOUR RESERVE.?? " all in all, rather poor P R for the sport... jmy

interesting... you make valid points about the technicality of this issue...thanks for an insiders explantion...' a mistake made, can sometimes be tragic, as in this case. I suppose it is normal to expect those who feel they were "wronged" to look for some avenue of compensation... As for the apartment owner...... wouldn't homeowners ins.( if it was a condo) or else the Buildings' Liability Ins... cover such accidents...???? To go after the aircraft, it's manufacturer, and components suppliers, seems to be simply a search for 'deep pockets'. no wonder the cost of general aviation aircraft is so high..... j t

I drive on ice covered roads alot... when you try a high speed, 180 degree turn... you tend to skate..... and centrifugal force overcomes what little friction there is, between the road and the tires,,, and you slide OUT... This quick little airplane did the same thing..... they tried a hard 180,,,,, and i beleive the wind was from the southeast,,, and It added to the situation by helping to Sllllllide them...... into the building. That's all.... nasty bit of bad fortune,,,,, which could have been foreseen,,, if Not by the inexperienced Lidle,,,, at least by his instructor..... How can you fault the aircraft......??? given a generous amount of room which would be required to accomplish that maneuver,, and it's no problem,,, a non issue.... But trying to do it , in that small channel formed by tall buildings, and AGAINT the prevailing winds,,, and ACCIDENTS can happen.... This country is waaaay too litigious.. what ever happened to acceptance of "bad luck" without looking for someone to sue,,,,,,, and for WHAT??? monetary gain does nothing to bring back the deceased, who are the REAL victims here.... jmy

2 cutaways but 6 reserve rides... cutaway with shot and a half capewells from an entangled french papillon mid 70's cutaway while using a wonderhog with 3 ring release, from a strato-cloud with tension knot in the right side steering lines,, wouldn't clear...1980..... 4 non cutaway emergencies...( OK 3 of them were 'stupidity" One was an emergency ) a. inability to extract main PC. gettin low. pulled blast handle... piggyback rig. late 70's b. horseshoe , (twisted bellyband) bag out, some lines out, D bag stayed closed... pulled blast handle piggyback rig ....late 70's c. dislocated right shoulder at exit... left hand reserve pull @ approx. 3000 ft javelin rig....2005 d. inabilty to extract main PC . got low. pulled reserve left handed at 1,300 feet . javelin rig 2006 none since jmy

if most of the staples are sticking up.... as seen in the photo...then get a couple of vise grips... Set them up at just the right squeeze.....so they will bite the staple without breaking it,,, and do that with the nose of the tool,, right on the floor... then by rocking the locked vise grips against the floor, you'll leverage those bad boys, right out of the subfloor.... no problemo If you can run two tools at a time, and if they are set up to unlock, easily,, you'll be pleased with how quick the job can be done.... Then just sweep and shop vac..... ...Plus.. no sawdust in the air, and all over the room....

Do you consider yourself a good "Spotter"?
jimmytavino replied to Legs's topic in Safety and Training
Yes. -
whoa....... at what point did the pilot chute get deployed???? and was it simply Pulled OUT by the deploying main??? or did the aff student, experience a horseshoe.. which he then cleared by pulling the PC??? was the student aware of what happened??? or did he need to have it all explained to him, later, on the ground.. Did he land ON the dz... how were the winds??? Not sure if the right move is to toss the d bag out the door.....But i wasn't there.... any way the student could have been stopped, before getting to the door??? how many JM's?? was one outside?? and one inside??? glad it all worked out... jmy

I would guess during the 90's "swoop" became less of a freefall reference and more of a canopy "move"... Of course, before swooping there was turf-surfing...... i term I always liked.....cause it was perfectly descriptive of how people were landing.... Those landings only came with improvements in canopy design and flying techniques, which seem to have evolved maybe in the mid to late 80's..... Others may be able to pinpoint more accurately, just when the change happened... was it more like, in the 90's??? RW swooping had something to to with the baggy, high drag suits in use at the time....70's primarily.. One could dive hard, and then throw all that drag out,,, "flying squirell like" .. and (theoretically) STOP!!!!! Certain jumpers were very good at it. some not so adept... ( it took a time or two to "dial things in" ) Being base type personell , I can assure you that I've personally seen a few of the wide-eyed attemps that many a friend endured,, as they sailed past and under a formation . Tough learning curve,, but some people are very adept at it... bring back Swoop Meets!! the freefall kind

swoop.....in the context of skydiving USED to mean that diving, flaring, stopping move that a late docker would put on an RW formation, or on a 3 way, or even on a solo.. ....Not sure how many here even REMEMBER what a "pin and base".....is.... but a swoop was that last aggressive move to the slot, carrying speed, from a dive, but bleeding off that speed soas to arrive on grips,,,, smoothly gracefully and without ANY excess momentum.... THEN,,,, as canopy piloting became an art, as well as a survival technique, the term "swoop" transitioned over to what we commonly think of today..... as Pilots finish their descent in an orderly and speedy and dramatic way..... So nowadays we can do 2 totally different and distinct swoops,,,,,, on the same skydive.... how cool is that???? jmy

what was the worst canopy youve ever jumped?
jimmytavino replied to caspar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
5 cell strato-star borrowed it from a friend, on my 999th jump.... I was allowed to double manifest , in order to make my 1,000th jump that same day...* had a pretty SOLID landing.. fortunately ,,, it was in the peas... NEVER jumped another 5 cell..... ever.... .. * ....p.s. # 1,000 was made on my reliable old french papillon...( at the time, I had maybe 50 jumps on a ram-air) -
I grew up callin' it "Soda" Only we pronounced it "So -der"

deer are cool... don't see as many in the woods out back as we used to... this thread reminds me of a story.. which you pry have ALL heard.... anyway,, These 2 Polish Guys are out hunting,,, Stavros accidently shoots George and so is beside himself with guilt and grief... he promises george that he will save him, and so drags his buddy outta the woods to a local hospital... After working on George for 2 hours.. the Doctor finally comes out and Stavros says, " Doc. Doc. Is he OK.??" and the doctor says " he'll be allright but that was a tough, tough case..... It would have been a lot easier though,,, if you hadn't . . . . . field-dressed him, first !" >.

funny you should mention that... a local news reporter here in Rochester NY cracked two eggs on a sidewalk during yesterdays morning program, and in under 15 minutes.... they were frozen,,, solid enough to pick them up with a spatula... attached are jpegs of "cold" and of what we DO with snow,,, around here... jay tee

Not really interested in still shots with the HC cameras,,, but in that same vein,,, How are frame grabs?? as compared to frame grabs in the old sony trv series and does the HC series use sony memory sticks???? the small Ones?? i.e small in physical size not memory size,,,,......i think they are now available in up to 1 gig....thanks... o[:-) jmy

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times

... a race which is run well, and with heart and effort and team solidarity makes WINNERS out of all the members of The Team........... be sure NOT to get confused by the score.... p.s. People who are "goons" on the field or off, will surely have that catch up with them..... They will not see the same success enjoyed in all aspects of their lives, as the real sport enthusiasts will see. play hard, but play within the scope of respect for your adversary and for yourself..as your sons team did..... congrats to your son, his sister and all the soccerMoms and dads... for running the good race and for having such a winning season. we'll stay tuned...... -
i think he is an Extra-Terrestrial...

nice story/ glad you're ok and NO offense...... BUT for the record.......... Johnny Gates did NOT "go In"...... and i take issue with your terminology i didn't know the guy personally, but i believe he suffered a heart attack at deployment time, right?????? His correct use and arming of an AAD , prior to the skydive, allowed his body to descend to the ground, more or less in better shape than if he was without that device... rah rah rah and all that other shit... but the term you used doesn't really apply to him.....does it???? that term applies to someone who still has all of his/her faculties intact and yet fails to activate a ripcord pull , or seriously loses altitude awareness, or otherwise hits the ground at too fast a rate of speed to survive, or somehow experiences a "pilot error" or a serious and unfixable canopy issue.....and as such does not survive...........IMHO you do His memory a disservice, if you say he 'went in'.....No????? "went OUT"... maybe .... and with style and dignity, as unexpected as it was.... no offense intended.... jmy a3914 d12122 scr scs nscr.
