I don't think so. I think the number one thing on his mind right now is getting elected, and I think he's just doing this as a political move to make it appear that solving this crisis is more important to him than getting elected. And I think that getting elected is the number one thing on Obama's mind right now too. Sure, they're both concerned about the crisis, and they're both trying to figure out the best way to deal with it, but they're both doing everything they can to win this campaign at the moment. It's a smart move for McCain though, because it will probably fool a lot of people into thinking, well, exactly what you just said. (Just my opinion, of course.)

Dinner. That's the best answer in this thread.

Go ride the new rides on top of the Stratosphere. I haven't been there since they built the new ones, but they look like fun.

We could use that logic to make a lot of adults not responsible for their actions. Should we require some sort of IQ test before allowing adults to sign legally-binding contracts? I'm guessing that the majority of people who are facing losing their homes right now are not mentally handicapped and that they just made bad decisions. I don't think that most of them are "innocent" people who simply got taken advantage of. I've made a lot of bad decisions in my life too, but I've never expected other people to bail me out from those decisions. One of the more recent bad decisions I've made was buying a house at the peak of a housing bubble, which is now worth significantly less than the mortgage we took out on it. Which sucks, but I don't blame anyone other than myself.
-
Yes, "innocent" was a poor choice of words there.

Now there's an idea.

I don't hate texting; I just haven't found any use for it myself. I don't feel the need to be any more connected than I am. And the phone plan I'm on right now charges me for texting, so that makes me even less likely to use it. It doesn't bother me if other people are doing it though, as long as they're not being rude or dangerous about it. (Same goes for lots of other things.)
-
Yeah, email works for the same thing. I don't like long phone conversations either, but I've yet to find a good reason to get out my cell phone manual and figure out how to send text messages. (Yes, I have access to my phone in more places than I have access to email, but I just don't need to stay in contact with anyone 24/7.)

I was following some links from that site you posted, and I came across the Kevin Costner Fandango Tour. I think I've been to most of those places though, since I grew up in West Texas.

Thanks (to FlyingJ too). I'll probably be making plans in the next month or so, so I'll shoot you a PM then. And to JP: Yeah, Big Bend is a really cool place if you want to do some hiking or rafting..... Or Jamaica sounds good too (but you have to take me with you! )
-
Do you know what Big Bend is like during the winter (Dec./Jan.)? We're taking a road trip to TX around that time and I'm thinking of camping around Big Bend for a couple of nights, but I've only been there in the summer.

Thanks. It doesn't really say exactly what she does think should be taught in schools, but it suggests that she is for more than just abstinence-only ed.
-
I'm not going to read that whole article. (Though I do see the difference there in "explicit" and "comprehensive.") Can you quote where it says that Palin supports something other than abstinence-only sex education in schools? The quote I originally posted was her answer to this question: From: http://74.125.95.104/search?q=cache:PqxhXA6cqtwJ:eagleforumalaska.blogspot.com/2006_07_30_archive.html+palin+eagle+forum+alaska&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=7&gl=us Granted, it's a rather polarized question. So I'd be curious to know if she does support something other than abstinence-only education.
-
What is the difference between explicit and comprehensive sex education? Have you seen anything stating that Palin supports "comprehensive" sex education?

I haven't been talking about forcing anyone to be abstinent. And as far as what needs to be taught, education about how women get pregnant and how STD's are spread is what needs to be taught. I think a teenager who understands those things is a lot more likely to remain abstinent (or at least engage in safer sex) than a teenager who is simply told, "Don't have sex." The indisputable fact is that abstinence is the best way to prevent pregnancy or STD's. But if you're not going to remain abstinent, then there are ways for making sex safer. These are the things that kids should be taught. And that's what I plan on teaching my kids (if I have any), whether the schools are teaching it or not.
-
Which is fine, but I see no reason to lend any credibility to any of those imaginary things. Not even in the sense of calling myself agnostic to them. (This is not so much aimed at you as it is to the person who claimed that agnostics are atheists with brains.)
-
Well, if we want to say that something exists but is not knowable, then we can make up all sorts of imaginary things to believe in.
-
No. It is different for different people. Hard to set an exact age. You can't prevent them, just educate them. Yes, I know what sex education is (should be). But from your post that I was replying to, you made it sound like it was perfectly harmless and safe for teenagers to be having sex, which it is not. And we can't prevent them from having sex, but that does not negate the fact that abstinence is the safest of all options. Anyhow, for the most part, I agree with you more than I agree with Palin. I think explicit sex education should be taught in schools. I just think it's a bit over the top to be calling her a religious psycho just because she believes in abstinence.
-
As a non-religious person, I also believe that abstinence is the best way to prevent pregnancy and the spread of STD's. There is no such thing as 100% safe sex. I also believe that the emotions that go along with sexual activity can be harmful to people who are too young/unprepared to deal with it. So I don't see a problem with teaching abstinence, but I do see a problem with teaching abstinence only (which is perhaps what you are referring to?). I think that young people should be taught about the realities of sex (physical and emotional), and that they should be taught about the various forms of protection, but they should know that abstinence is the safest of all options. So, yeah, I disagree with her view, but I disagree with some of what you said as well.

Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West
Shotgun replied to normiss's topic in Speakers Corner
That's not me. But that was you at the RNC, wasn't it? I liked your "Raisin' McCain" song. -
So I think that if a god did exist, then it would be "discoverable," or "knowable," which precludes me from being agnostic.
-
I'm not angry, Skyrad. And here's a big hug for you: >

No, silly, now it's between Obama and "bush." OK, that was sexist and uncalled for. I take it back, and I apologize.
