  1. Without going in to too much detail (since this is not an abortion thread), I think there are certain instances where abortion may be the best solution, and I think a woman should have the right to make that decision. If there was a good way to make it legal only in those situations, then I would probably be for that, but every way I can think of is pretty flawed. For example, if we decided that abortion would only be legal if a woman had been raped, I suspect that there would be an increase in false reports of rape. Or if it's only legal when the woman's life is in danger, it seems that there would be complications over who exactly gets to make that determination. So, for the most part, I am against abortion, but I don't see any way to make it legal for those who really need it, but illegal for those who just didn't use birth control.
  2. Right. Because we see all of those pro-choice people marching around OB-GYN clinics, trying to get pregnant women to abort their babies. And if the Clintons were pro-abortion, then I really wouldn't expect them to have any children, ya know? But they're not; they're pro-choice. There is a difference.
  3. Why do they feel the need to use Palin's daughter's pregnancy to rebut some silly rumors that are floating around the Internet? If they wanted to announce the pregnancy, they should have just announced it. Instead, they've politicized the situation by saying that they're releasing the news as a rebuttal to the liberals. Anyhow, it doesn't affect my vote. And I'd disagree with her view on abstinence-only sex education whether her daughter was pregnant or not.
  4. Wow, a cute girl who can assemble a rifle? If she was just a little bit older, she'd be on the ticket with McCain right now! (Just kidding, people!)
  5. Perhaps it's the reason the words are said. Go back and read the post in question. Yeah, I got the impression that she was just pointing out the racist tone of the OP rather than making a racist comment herself.
  6. Yeah, but I suspect that this will help the McCain campaign rather than hurt it. It gives them a chance to say, "See, we're not the same as the Bush administration." And now it's sounding like he might give his acceptance speech from the Gulf Coast rather than from the convention, which they can compare to Obama's fireworks-laden Mile High acceptance speech to further their "Rock Star Obama" angle.
  7. I'm sure that there are a lot of people who don't know how to do that. But I can't generally tell who those people are based on their appearance (looking around at people in WalMart). Why would I condemn anyone for using crutches if they need them? I didn't condemn you for using a calculator.
  8. I didn't miss the point; I was just making a joke. And I guess I don't really pay enough attention to what other people are doing when I'm shopping (unless they're in my way) to notice how they're comparing prices. And I've never found the need to carry around a calculator while shopping, since I find it fairly easy to estimate a unit price without one. But it doesn't make me sad to think that someone else might need to use a calculator for such things.
  9. Maybe the rest of the people aren't doing what you're doing because they have noticed that the price per pound is already listed in small writing next to the overall price.
  10. I've been doing some Yahoo-age, because I do want to learn more about her. Which is also why I asked you the question since you said that you've studied her governance in-depth. I don't know why you're responding so negatively when I just asked you a simple question. I haven't slung any shit about her or called her a dumb cheerleader.
  11. What are her plans for reforming the "angry white guy establishment"?
  12. Wow. I'm all for responsible gun ownership, but this is certainly not an example of it. I hope that you've learned a lesson, and I hope that no one ends up getting hurt with the gun that was stolen.
  13. Yes, I did. Which is why I asked for clarification.
  14. So you think she'll need a few years being mentored by McCain before she's capable of handling the top job? In any case, I'm thinking I don't want her anywhere near the top job. She seems to be way too far right for my liking.
  15. What is it that you don't like about the job he's doing?
  16. and therefore neither is Obama according to Billvon whom I have to agree with. I don't agree with that. I think Obama is qualified. But to be fair, I know a lot more about Obama than I know about Palin (or McCain), so I won't make my decision until I have more information.
  17. Yep. And if McCain gets elected now, it will likely be because he has a "vpilf". I sincerely hope this country is better than that.
  18. Well, my mind is still open until I learn more about her (and McCain). But from what little I know about her now, my opinion is that she is not qualified to be President, and therefore not qualified to be VP either. And of course the creationist thing is a pretty big put-off. I'm leaning toward Obama anyway, but there is something weird about McCain's VP choice - seems to be more strategy to get him elected rather than strategy to do a good job running the country.
  19. As an undecided independent voter..... I think McCain just pushed my vote a little more toward Obama.
  20. To me, it was reminiscent of the White House. It seemed that they were trying to give the viewer a visual of what the Obama family would look like as the First Family.
  21. Maybe I'll get around to reading it one of these days... But generally, if I feel like I am having to "trudge through" a book, then I'll just put it down and find something more interesting to read. I'm a slow reader, and there are way too many books I want to read to waste my time reading things that I'm just not that in to. But my late friend Rob did give me that book, and he said it was one of his favorites, so I guess it is one book that I might have a reason to try and get through. Though it would then suck that he wasn't even around for me to discuss it with.
  22. I don't have nor want a debit card. If I'm not using cash, then I use a credit card. If I want to get cash, I go to my bank, unless I am nowhere near my bank, in which case I will pay the fee at a different ATM (which pretty much never happens). Just because you do things a certain way doesn't mean that that's the way everyone else does or should do things. There is a good reason for having braille on a drive-up ATM, whether you want to admit it or not.
  23. My bank has one ATM in town, and it's a drive-up. Sure, there are walk-up ATM's in town, but they're not associated with my bank, so I'd get charged a fee if I used them. So I'm guessing that any blind person who has an account at my bank would probably walk up to the ATM if they didn't want to give someone else their PIN number. It makes sense to me to put braille on the ATM.
  24. I had never heard of a medianoche sandwich til you started this thread, so I had to look them up. Sounds good, but I don't think there are any Cuban restaurants around here either. I could try making one from a recipe, but it probably wouldn't be the same. Well, not that I would know, since I've never had one.
