And why do these people get to decide what marriage is "all about"? I certainly don't see my marriage as a religious rite, so does that affect the marriages of everyone who does? And don't they realize that marriage has continually changed over the years? Is the "traditional marriage" that they want to preserve the type of marriage in which a woman basically becomes the property of a man? Or is it OK that that particular little part of what marriage was "all about" changed? "Protecting marriage" my ass. What utter BS.

Do you think that a divorce ban would be a good way to defend the institution of marriage? Back in 1967, when some states still had laws banning interracial marriage, this is what the Supreme Court had to say: I hope that we will one day be hearing something similar from the Court regarding same-sex marriage. We shouldn't be allowing a simple majority vote to take away rights from a minority group of people.
-
True... (especially the "dick move" part), but it looks like it'll be going back to the CA Supreme Court, and I hope that they do the right thing.
-
I don't think anyone is suggesting that we change "marriage" to mean "divorce." Merriam-Webster's has already added this to the definition of marriage: "the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage." And of course, "marriage" has long had the alternate meaning of "an intimate or close union" (as in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell by William Blake), so it's not like the word has always had just one simple meaning.

I suspect that words will continue to evolve whether it annoys you or not.

You know, to some people, eating crackers and drinking wine is a religious thing, and the fact that some of us atheists also eat crackers and drink wine doesn't take anything away from others' religious beliefs. Just like the fact that some of us atheists are married, and that doesn't take anything away from people who consider their marriage to be a religious thing. Marriage is a legal thing for _everyone_ who is married. It's only a religious thing for those who want it to be. So my personal opinion is that it's time for the Supreme Court of the U.S. to step in and declare that it is unconstitutional to ban marriage for anyone based on sexual orientation. It's just flat-out discrimination, and using "religious beliefs" for it is BS. And to anyone who voted yes on Prop 8: I am absolutely fucking disgusted.

It sounds like this accident could have been prevented if they had done this.

If schools were teaching young girls how to become strippers . . .
Shotgun replied to Shotgun's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm not sure exactly. Something about how "a king can marry a king" is what I've been hearing around here. I'm surprised the "Yes on Prop 8" people are not using that excuse too. "But if we allow gay marriage, we'll have to change the dictionaries! Won't someone please think of the dictionaries!" -
I'd be curious to know the stats on how many people per year are injured because of gun ranges at gun shows, before I could say whether that is a commonsense suggestion. (I currently have no idea.) I'm not immediately seeing why a gun range at a gun show is particularly more dangerous than a stand-alone gun range, but I know pretty much nothing about gun shows, so maybe I'm missing something?
-
What kind of rules would you suggest? I was shooting guns at that age, but my parents only let me shoot guns that I was strong enough to control. I think that some regulations on guns are good, but at some point we've just got to let parents be responsible for their own kids.

I've seen him shake hands several times with a former drug addict and thief who used to steal drugs from her own charity. And to me, that brings up some serious questions about the people he chooses to pal around with.
-
OK, now I don't like Palin, but I don't think that she deserves to be called such nasty names.

This is what the Anchorage Daily News has to say about her, as they announce their endorsement for Obama: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081026/ap_on_el_pr/alaska_endorsement

MYSPACE: MOBSTERS: biggest internet time waster ever
Shotgun replied to leroydb's topic in The Bonfire
What is the game about? I've had several people send me links to it, but I haven't checked it out. And I don't really need another time-waster, but I'm curious to know what it's about. -
I don't have any anger. And of course you're welcome to your own opinion, even if I disagree with it.
-
You still didn't answer my question. And you're really just coming across as having an irrational hatred for Obama. So I'm done trying to discuss this particular subject with you.
-
I don't think I've ever felt like I won (or lost) an argument on here. Though occasionally, my mind has been changed by someone pointing out a flaw in my reasoning. I try not to visit this forum if I am in a negative mood. And if I start feeling truly pissed off at anyone in here, then I know it's time to go away. I guess I read/post in here because they are topics that I am interested in, but I find that it's best to approach this forum with a sense of humor, and to try not to take anything in here too seriously.

She will, perhaps, be done (though she might do pretty good if she comes back catering only to the religious right). But ultimately, the choice of Palin as VP reflects badly on McCain more than anyone else. If it's the reason he loses, it's his own fault. It was certainly the reason I quit taking him seriously as a candidate, and then he just went downhill after that one big horrible decision.
-
Wow, so you're still trying to blame Obama for this? I just assumed your non-response to my last question was an admission of being wrong, but you're still going on with this crap. So now I'll ask you again: If this story had turned out to be true, would you be saying that McCain is at fault for making someone hate him so much that they would beat up a young woman and carve a "B" in her face?

Hey, it was very intelligent of her to laugh about fruit fly research during a speech where she's talking about helping children with disabilities. I mean, why would anyone want to study fruit flies?
-
Apparently Palin thinks that studying fruit flies has "little or nothing to do with the public good." http://thinkprogress.org/2008/10/24/palin-fruit-flies/ Now to be fair, I believe the research she is referring to is at this lab where they study fruit flies as pests, rather than studying autism, as the other link suggests. But I still get the impression that she thinks they're studying fruit flies just for the fun of it.

Hey, my neighbors are pretty cool. Well, except for those assholes down the street who have a "Yes on Prop 8" sign in their yard.

Yes, I know.... seeing as I often get to rub soap on them in the shower.
