  1. PLFs work almost as well in snowboarding as they do in skydiving. I'd advocate strongly for a helmet even though some people have classified them as optional above. Not to hijack the thread but I was stopping and the board kicked out in front of me - I had 2 options a) put my hands out b) land flat on my back with nothing to slow me down. There is no-way that a PLF was possible. PLF's are still good though cause the doctor said that the advantage of wrist guards is that the move the break from the wrist to the arm - which is easier to "fix" Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  2. I don't agree with your last statement specifically. If anything personal experience (not studies and so I am not claiming any wide trend) shows the reverse to be true. Simply look at the popularity of skin lightening products within the black community so see the "trend". For what it is worth my personal opinion is that the whole subject is given far more airtime than it is worth. You can't and shouldn't change people's belief structures - if I hate blacks that is my problem. If I don't employ someone based on skin colour that is my problem (a "good" person selects an employee on merit - so my prejudice potentially exludes a better candidate). I have no problem if a black person hates whites either. The only area that should be of concern is violence against a race - in either physical or verbal form - and the laws for this are well established and of quite long standing. 3. Since I haven't seen anyone mention it wrist guards are a good investment - I learn't the hard way on how easy it is to break a wrist. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  4. Maybe he was referring to a hiking trip in Appalachia. An open marriage is means that technically sex with someone other than your wife/husband does not constitute an affair - I have no problem with that. Whether it applies in this situation, I don't know as I am not following the story. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. A friend went to a stag do in Estonia (from UK) specifically cause the hookers look good and were cheap. (un)fortunately? the groom to be couldn't get it up as he felt to guilty Quite a few people that I know go to amsterdam for stag do's - I guess they don't just go down to the pub Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  6. Bullshit, GI jane. The desire to kill 5 very large, potentilly endangered animals says alot about a person. T'is not for food, nor self defence, it is blatant, un-necessary violence. You condone such violence yourself, but those that actually have a heart, usually find this type of behavior completely unacceptable. We all share this earth together, what gives some pompus git the right to kill and elephant, a lion, a rhino, a leopard and a Buffalo. for what? An erection?!? The logic of some people never ceases to amaze me! I think that you will find that 99% of the african safari ventures that provide hunting of big game provide ALOT of conservation. It does not take much to see that from a purely selfish/business point of view it is in their best interests to maintain their stock at sustainable levels. As such they usually provide breeding programs, fencing and security for the animals and actually welfare as no-one wants to hunt some half starved animal that is disease ridden. On top of this the vast majority of southern africa struggles to provide employment and the game ranching sector provides this. I think you will also find that in many cases the meat from elephant and buffalo is eaten and is not simply left to rot. As to hunting lion without managing the population it creates problems in the local community - come to think of it have a look at the "damage" that the ivory ban has inflicted on local populations in southern africa - I just love it when people place the lives of animals ABOVE that of humans There are also hunting licenses that put quite alot of money into government coffers. With ANY sport people can critisize - for gods sake you are a skydiver and to quote someones sig line "burning fossil fuels for fun" you regularly endanger your life in a way that the vast majority of the worlds population would say is reckless and stupid. 7. "It is an offence for any person, without lawful authority or good reason, to have with him in a public place, any article which has a blade or is sharply pointed except for a folding pocket-knife which has a cutting edge to its blade not exceeding 3 inches." - Criminal Justice Act (1988) section 139(1) I doubt the scouts haven't fallen foul of anything. They were offering the same advice back in the 70s. Yes I did 5 minutes of research before my post and read up, the problem is that there are also caveats like this So pocket knife branding is taken into account. Superficially it doesn't look like the law has changed simply that the authorities have changed their interpretation. Not sure if you are a parent in the UK but certainly we find that parents are pretty anti knives. It doesn't help that for us "good" use of knives amongst teenagers is limited and actual knife crime is very high (a couple of high profile murders locally) so perhaps I am in a biased community. Finally so I don't hijack the thread - I haven't been a scout and don't follow them so I had simply assumed this was a new drive. 8. yes but you were a GIRL in the 60's - you were supposed to be in the kitchen Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  9. Except that in this case, there is no law involved. It's just advice published in the in-house magazine of a private organisation. If you don't like it, leave; you're probably too old to be a scout anyway. UK knife laws are quite restrictive and as I pointed out I am not entirely sure what is allowed. It sounds like the scouts have simply fallen foul of the same "confusion" that I have and it is safer for them to simply advise against it. If an outdoor organisation panders to heavily to H&S it deserves to fade away. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  10. As you have rightly pointed out a number of times in the past it is the culture that is floored. The problem is that once you have used the blunt instrument of the law to "fix" something it is next to impossible to reverse the decision. I have a 9yr old son, and I do not know what the legal situation on him owning a knife is. I would happily give him a small swiss army knife and he may hurt himself slightly but I trust him to know right from wrong. As I don't know the situation and it is frowned on he won't get one. Perversely though being a boy and "needing" a knife I did discover a 12 inch butchers knife in the garden that had been "borrowed" from the kitchen to cut something Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  11. Her knees for rug burns... True story - we had a male employ arrive at work with rug burns on his hands and knee's. He liked "ladies" with hairy legs Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  12. Hog wash, the image had normal pictures of the other presedents, and an image of some googlie eyes and a black background. Mugabe and bush as baboons, was comparing them to baboons, a carechature is a carecature, this image is basicallly calling your presedent a nigger. It is not funny, there is no excuse for it and anyone that thinks it is funny is a racist cunt! First off he aint my president. I tend to agree with others on your use of language that you know offends detracts from the whole argument. Lastly I grew up in Africa and I think Jim's comments are a fairly accurate representation of how most africans would see the picture. In fact I do wonder when paternalistic defence of a race becomes a form of racism in itself? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  13. Surely it is riskier for a tandem to exit at 5k than an AFF student? Also isn't it riskier for a tandem to have an off landing than a student? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  14. Prove it Jo. Show us the evidence you claim to have. It is a simple request. Your credibility suffers greatly when you make a big claim, promise to reveal proof and then offer endless excuses why you can't do it. If you could actually prove Duane was Cooper then Jerry's tactics and confrontations shouldn't matter one bit to you. 377 +1 Notice how these posts are studiously avoided. On a side note does anyone know if a credability meter rolls over when it reaches 0? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  15. Some-one mentions that there were tandem instructors on board - if they stayed with the AFF students then I would imagine this counts as students being "under supervision" and then surely this is not a problem? I had got the impression from the earlier posts that AFF students were left alone in the plane with the pilot. The only downside of a TI being left in command is mobility as far as I can see as they probably have a student strapped to them. 16. I meant to be harsh when i used it, it astounds me that being racist towards you own presedent is overshadowed by a word that is simply another word for a vagina. If you allow yourself to be highly offended by a word that was appropriately used, then you ned to grow up a little. I have underlined the two possile definitions i was thinking of when I initially used that term, I stand by it. Notice the two definitions i highlighted aree not gender specific? If you are going to offendended by something, it is best that you understand ut further than what you grandmother may have told you! There are certain boundries when it comes to humor, and the image this thread is based upon is well and truly over that boundry. It is purely offensive and un unecessary! While I don't find it funny I don't think it is racist. ALL political leaders are mocked and there are cartoons in abundance of Tony Blair with huge ears, people chose to make a big thing out of Obama's skin colour - this is just a satirical impression of it. I've seen pictures of both George Bush and Robert Mugabe depicted as baboons - why is the picture of Mugabe decried as racist but not Bush? 17. Jo - we are ALL sick to death of the whining about how everyone needs to accept that Duane was Cooper. As 377 has said at least a dozen times - you claimed to have proof that Duane was Cooper - show the proof and the entire problem of Jerry/FBI and Bigfoot hiding the truth goes away. You do realise that by choosing to totally ignore the calls to either apologise for your statement and back down or come up with the goods, makes it look like you know you are wrong but won't face it? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  18. Right. So a cunt suck is someone who likes to eat pussy. Again. What's so wrong about a guy who likes to eat pussy?!?? Depends if he is your gay lover I suppose Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  19. We watched the world championships that were in London recently and my son was really inspired so we did some research (he is 9 years old). It seems that gymnastics is the best "safe" way into the sport so he is signed in and loving it. Ironically the only downside is that he is the only boy amongst 15 kids - I wonder how long before that becomes an up-side for him. 9...10...11...12. I'm gonna say 3 more years. And yeah it looks like gymnastics is the way to go if you want to do all the flips and all that other stuff. I just wanna jump off of high shit and jump from roof to roof. isn't that base Seriously gymnastics teaches you how to tumble which I guess is simply a PLF by another name. Some of the martial arts clubs in London also teach free-running so maybe for adults that is a way to go? The current world champ did 5 years of breakdancing not sure if you have seen any clips but damn he is has serious upper body strength http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3KjQdVfly8 Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  21. I think your logic is flawed. Unsupervised students are probably more of a danger to you in the plane than out. I've been a student in an aircraft emergency where it was unknown if we would make it back to the airport of 6 jumpers on the load, the jumpmaster stayed with me in the plane as his responsibility and all other jumpers left. I know that Gary was pissed at having to stay in the plane but he did spend the time on descent debriefing and running through options with me in case the situation deteriorated further. Where in my post did I say to leave anyone unsupervised? You're arguing against a statement that doesn't exist. In an emergency, the less to worry about, the better. I'm simply saying that the pilot's decision should be either get out or stay. The instructors choose whether or not to take the students or to leave the students and an instructor on the plane. A pilot ordering all but students out is protecting "my ass" by avoiding the ramifications of said students dying on his order. I don't see that this leaves supervision, unless I am misunderstanding something? A pilot dealing with an aircraft emergency can't supervise students (in my opinion) Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  23. I'm weighing the pros and cons of this.. PRO: save money and avoid hearbreak when you invariably drop the thing CON: more expensive to maintain an older bike and potentially inherit problems caused by someone else. All in all, a used bike has its advantages, but so does new. I've always bought used cars, but cars depreciate far more in value, and cost an absolute fortune brand-new.. I also had the time, tools and money to maintain a used car at the time, but this is less true of my situation now.. I'm considering getting the same model I rented - a Honda CBF 125. It targets new/inexperienced riders, looks pretty good, is nice and manoeuvrable and is relatively affordable. It came out in 2009, so buying used isn't much of an option for this model.. But I have plenty of time to try out a few different bikes before I commit to getting one
  24. Hi Chris, There is a gear section on dropzone.com that has reviews on all parts of equipment and it is worth reading the comments. Also there are alot of threads in the forums on equipment for newly qualified skydivers, some of the most informative posters are skybytch and BillVon and you can search the forum limiting yourself to posts from those users. Searching for equipment for newbies etc, will unfortunately not help as you'll bring up hundreds of threads just like yours. 25. Not sure what context the instructor advised you to consider jumping again, but if you enjoy it then I suggest that you go out and do 2 jumps on the same day.
