  1. Jeez... starting to get a bit paranoid there Jo? What I find extremely funny about this thread and in fact over the past 2 or 3 thousand posts I would say 99% of the reason for me visiting is to see how seriously people take some random persons word as truth or of serious consequences I don't know what the average posters age is on this thread but I get the impression that Airtwardo is a young'un (for a change) but the level of bullshit claims certainly rivals that of 16 year old kids talking anonymously on the internet about their anatomical dimensions. What really ticks me off is how much I have grown to hate this thread and yet like a crack addict I keep having to come back for more - really wish it was possible to be banned from a singe thread Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  2. I've got an Advent from PC world and it is the first netbook I have owned (cost about £230). It has a 120GB hd, and is reasonably fast with about 2 hours of battery life - running XP. I get occasional screen resolution warnings. I made the mistake of intending to do "serious" work on the netbook and heavy duty programs (in my case Matlab) are so slow they are worthless. The sound from the built in speakers is poor but useable, and the webcam that is built in I have never used so no comments. It is over a year old and has stood up to abuse including being transported under the seat of my bike regularly (this was my primary buying option originally as I got sick of needing a back-pack just for my laptop). If I had to make the choice again I would: 1) Go for the cheapest possibly with a solid state disk for the higher reliability 2) Either spec linux or put linux on from day 1 for the better performance. 3) Not put anything other than email/internet and office/open office on the netbook. Happy to have a video playback (BBC Iplayer) on the netbook even on XP it performs ok. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  3. Exactly what I thought Jo until that pesky Snowmman dug up facts that showed that commutations/pardons were being handed out in massive quantities at the time. Unless you think that this was done as part of a conspiracy to mask Duane's unlikely commutation in a sea of similar clemencies, you just have to conclude that Duane was at the right place at the right time and got lucky. You have to let go of conspiracy theories when indisputable contrary facts are presented. The ET UFO crowd and alien crop circle believers have a really hard time letting go, but I don't. Sometimes the fantastic becomes mundane when you dig deep enough. It isn't fun, it can be a huge emotional letdown, but you have to let go. Otherwise, you can be accurately classified as obsessed. 377 Never let the facts get in the way of a good yarn Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  4. I think in most cases it is in the websites terms of service and can vary. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. I was specifically thinking of the arrival of the PC and it's impact on our lives. When you look at it a secretary typing out your notes did not get any "ownership" - neither did the paper manufacturers or typewriter manufacturer. However as we have moved over to digital formats we have chosen to "encode" our idea's and property in file formats that are explicitly owned by someone else. The fundamental problem is that the general public (lawmakers) do not understand what software is, and therefore accepted practice amongst software vendors in their licensing models has allowed them far more "rights" than traditional products. For example Ford do not simply assign you a license to drive one of their cars while they retain ownership! I think digital media (in its many forms) is unique in this respect. 7. Actually I think that it is realy poor to use completely "modern" equipment. Surely National Geo could get their hands on a modern military round at least? For what their jump is worth they should have just used footage from the lingerie jumps Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  8. Are you talking about dual citizenship (the fact that the country recognizes you not only as its citizen but also citizen of a country B), or you're talking about more than one citizenship (when a country basically says it will only consider you its own citizen, no matter what other citizenships you've got)? I just cannot understand how dual citizenship could be illegal, as it seems to be only possible when two countries signed a treaty making it dual. I meant that in some countries you are not allowed to be a citizen of more than one country. I don't know the reason why countries have such laws. 9. Actually I think that we have steadily given away our ownership rights over the past 30 years and I wouldn't be surprised to find that we don't own anything that we have digitally. For example most computer software that you buy is simply a license to use - and ownership is retained by the company (e.g Microsoft). It is something that I think about, and while I am entirely passive about it, it does irritate/worry me. A classic example was that I noticed on gmail that the adverts targeted the content of my email, based on a document that I attached. We give away our rights all the time by just ticking the "agree to terms & conditions" without reading them. I know that in the age of "green" and worrying about environmental impact it is not PC but I definately prefer owning physical assets -whether it is a CD not an MP3 or a book/DVD. 10. WTF, you mean even if Obama doesn't have a valid birth certificate he still qualifies as a natural born citizen? Why do we let these idiots waste our time? Actually I will seek clarification in that issue. It would seem that give what people want to read into that parenthetical statement that anyone with just one parent being a citizen is still a natural born citizen even if born abroad. I think the verbiage was actually quite clear and had no connotation to mean that military and Diplomatic service were not requirements. Think about that before anyone spouts off and says I am all wrong. That would mean anyone borne outside he USA with just one parent being a citizen, having lived just five years in the USA would then be a naturalized citizen. That would qualify so many people as a natural citizen that this entire process of determining Naturalized Citizenship would all be a waste and that no section would need to be written to clarify it. I think that you will find that the vast majority of countries allow you to "inherit" citizenship from your parents country of birth. The UK even allowed citizenship to pass from your maternal grandparents at one stage in the past. It is logical if you think about it - say you are out of the US for 2 years and have a child - would you really want your child denied citizenship? Citizenship law can be really funny, in some countries dual citizenship is illegal and yet from personal experience of this it can be impossible to "not" break those laws. For example Zimbabwe "fixed" this problem by changing the law to state that only black births qualified for citizenship as most white people are of british descent and there is no mechanism for renouncing British citizenship. 11. When did Bush Jr ever jump? On the rare occasions when he reported for ANG pilot duties I guess sitting in an F 102 ejection seat put him in a parachute. Same with his absurdly stupid MISSION ACCOMPLISHED carrier landing in an A6. 377 I don't know that he has ever jumped. But I would classify ejection seat training as a "form" of parachute training. Of course he is probably to young and senior is the right age group and of course has made a number of jumps. But in all seriousness my point is that Bush JR looks very similar to the sketch (a better match than the other chap in my opinion) that was provided - and we know 100% that it is not him. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  12. I think the sketches are pretty meaningless. In all honesty they probably can be thought to be similar to a large number of people. See example attached and unlike Duane I CAN put my cooper suspect in a parachute! Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  14. The British are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats in Islamabad and have raised their security level from Miffed to Peeved. Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to Irritated or even A Bit Cross. Brits have not been A Bit Cross since the blitz in 1949 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from Tiresome to a Bloody Nuisance. The last time the British issued a Bloody Nuisance warning level was during the great fire of 1666. The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from Run to Hide. The only two higher levels in France are Collaborate and Surrender. The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed Frances white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the countrys military capability. It is not only the French who are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from Shout Loudly and Excitedly to Elaborate Military Posturing. Two more levels remain: Ineffective Combat Operations and Change Sides. The Germans also increased their alert state from Disdainful Arrogance to Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs. They also have two higher levels: Invade a Neighbor and Lose. Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels. The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy. Americans, meanwhile, are carrying out pre-emptive strikes on all of their allies, just in case. Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from No Worries to Shell Be Right, Mate. Three more escalation levels remain: Crikey!, I Think Well Need to Cancel the Barbie This Weekend and The Barbie is Cancelled. There has not been as situation yet that has warranted the use of the final escalation level. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  16. No respect please I was just too young and stupid to realise how crap it all was. I jumped the C9 in my profile pic until it literally disintegrated on opening one day I then bought a crap old wonderhog with an old Unit main which I jumped less then 5 times before downsizing to a Wildfire 170... 17. Poynter makes outboard pull sound like a mod primarily done for student stability. I never saw one. Our DZ jumpmasters were fanatical about having you protect your ripcord handles in the plane. An outboard pull would have been viewed skeptically by them since it is so much more easily snagged than the traditional inboard pull. The mod takes a bit of rigging work. Why would Cossey do the mod on a pilots rig? Various theories have been put forward, not sure if they make sense. If Cooper were familiar with military bailout rigs and became disoriented after exit, he might never find an outboard ripcord. You'd be looking/feeling/grasping in all the wrong places. 377 It is a long time ago for me (15 years) but I am pretty sure that outboard pull was standard on the crap that I trained on. I have grapped a portion of an on old picture from our club and I am certain that you can just see the ripcord handle facing outwards. 18. Another thing to consider is if his drawings need to have interoperability with other people's. Unfortunately, this is where AutoCAD is, kind of, a standard. We use Solidworks for mechanical design and as dxf/dwg (Autocad format) are pretty much the standard for 2D drawings and you can easily import/export files. I am not sure about architectural drawings, but mechanical design is pretty much all done in 3D now and dxf is obsolete with 3D formats (either brand formats like Solidworks/Pro-E or STEP/IGES formats) being the norm. 23. Yes knife crime is a major problem. Ironically our neighbours 16 year old son already has at least 2 offences involving possession of an illegal firearm, and mugging at knifepoint (yesterdays offence was a 98 year old man). Problem is that we know the "whole" story and so he comes from a family with a history of domestic violence and alcohol and drug abuse - ending 1 family members life early due to a heroin overdose. From about 12 he fell in with a gang - unfortunately he fits the operation Trident stereotype to the letter. It is the oddest thing to watch a kid go from someone you sheltered from his parents 3 to 4 years ago, to a monster who I am literally scared of. His offences are racking up quickly and have recently included assaulting police-officers. One thing that I do back JR up on though, is that it is the culture and mindset and NOT the weapon. I must admit that I am more than mildly annoyed that my 10 year old son will never have the opportunity to own a swiss army knife and play in the woods with it.
