  1. that includes skydivers. We were once thrown out of a restaurant as someone thought it was a bright idea to see if you could bat butter balls with the ceiling fan! Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  2. Look at the pics of the landing of the ransom. That really doesn't look "so terrible." I wonder how long did the pirates take to leave? Why would they choose to leave a safe location that they had been on for months and had what seemed to be a rapport with the hostages in the middle of "terrible" weather? It really sounds to me like it was either some truly ignorant pirates (which is possible) or a "plausible" cover story I wouldn't have thought they would do a drop in winds so bad that it would blow a boat over. It would have made spotting extremely difficult. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  3. with safe search on or off? Anyway made no difference to my name but I had to include 2nd result

  5. What does "squiding" mean? When a round parachute opens it inflates in a way that you wouldn't expect and that is it starts to inflate from the top so that initially during parts of the opening sequence it would look like a "squid" or hot air balloon. 7. Hi Tom, Opening at excessive speed's can and have resulted in fatalities. I have cut and paste this from the dz.com fatalities database although there is no indication that this hard opening was from excessive speed as no reason is given. There are alot of variables at work and modern RAM air parachutes behave very differently including in the manner that they open. I am to young to know much about skydiving in that time zone but I did all my training on T-10's and about 80 jumps on a C9 (photo on my profile). I had one incident where I opened the C9 and whether it was body position or speed I don't know which as I had lost altitude awareness and deployed at sub 1500 feet (as a student on timed delays my jump master thought I was dead) Anyway my chest mount altimeter hit me in the face and split my chin open. 8. I don't believe in mediums etc however I do think that synchronicity is interesting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchronicity A personal experience of this was driving towards junction 11 of the M25 (anti-clockwise) my father called to chat as he was driving (he calls every 2/3 months). He was driving clockwise towards me about 1/2 a mile away. Since we both live and work about 40 miles from that function in opposite directions it was weird. Probably doesn't conform to the true definition but the best I have experienced. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  9. A few years ago the IEEE had an article about change that stated that even the threat of death does not cause people to change habbits in the long term. The examples given were taken from medical advice given to people following heart-attacks on diet and something like 90% (it is a long time ago I may be wrong on details) of people reverted to old habbits very quickly despite the major scare they had just had. As someone pointed out people need "positive goals" so an end date is a good example or a positive reason to achieve their goals based on more immediate gratification. A few people have the sheer minded will power to change and carry on by themselves but they are few and far between. 10. For Gods sake Jo - if you have any intention of telling the truth please take 377's advice. Your continual hinting that you have something that validates the case - but refusing to disclose it is HIGHLY irritating. His post was polite and to the point and you have completely ignored it You even attack Sluggo who is probably the only other person left on the forum with any sympathy/time for your story. 11. Hopefully this reply isn't in-appropriate for bonfire perhaps some (.)(.) will cover for it? How can we ever get out of the mess we are in? It appears that the proposed solution from 10 is to get us all to borrow more - in fact that's what they are doing on our behalf. It doesn't seem to make sense You've kept the economy (falsely) strong by borrowing - we've realised that you can't afford to pay it back, so we'll step in and underwrite you borrowing some more to keep the economy ticking over? Please include boobies in reply to keep it the thread in bonfire Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  12. Perhaps it is because after a year of marriage the initial rush is wearing off and you are needing your own space. As you say you are still crazy about each other that is no bad thing it can be very hard to readjust to marriage. At first you spend time together and it is novel and new, then it wears off and it can be really difficult to then try and recreate your own separate spaces, without feeling like you are creating distance in a negative way. It is easy for people to say talk about it but it can be really difficult to portray needing personal space as a positive rather than a "I am bored or being with you and need to be with the guys" approach. You say you do what she likes but not your likes maybe you'd be better off next time that instead of tagging along simply encouraging her to go alone and gradually creating some space? 13. I am really puzzled by this thread. So far Sangi has only expressed curiosity in something that he freely admits is dangerous and risky. He has been bashed by swoopers who push the envelope in terms of wingloading and while landings under highly loaded canopies kill more skydivers than anything else these days (even experienced "conservative" jumpers like Tonto) they continue to expose themselves to the un-necessary and added risk. A number of base jumpers have reacted very negatively as well - another group who push the very envelope of what many people would call insane (myself included ) As someone put it even skydiving is an un-necessary risk activity - hell its not like he asked this on the bowling forum! The ONLY logical argument that I have heard is that tandem manufacturers are probably subject to a higher level of liability and therefore in terms of ethical behaviour it is unfair to risk someone else's livelihood for the sake of a cheap thrill. As to tandems being the holy grail/lifeblood of modern skydiving, I don't accept or believe that. Turbine aircraft and "large" DZ's provide a certain lifestyle or environment but so do little DZ's perhaps it is due to my entire skydiving experience being at a DZ with only a single cessna where we were annually treated to jumps from a CASA and helicopters courtesy of the airforce (Africa has its perks as these were cheaper jumps than the cessna). The environment is different and having lurked at a couple of large(r) UK DZ's you are clearly a customer of a business rather than a member of the family. 14. http://images.google.com/hosted/life/l?q=parachute+source:life&imgurl=be4b09fed634d9dd Courtesy of life magazine we can now put Duane near a parachute One of those chaps seems to resemble the composite. On a more serious note - this photo was taken from another thread, and one of the other pictures has the following caption Note that this was a very different time that an 11 year old would be allowed to attempt unaccompanied free-fall. 15. Thanks Jimmy for answering - so if I understand you correctly Tandem skydives in the US are technically NOT covered by the FAA in the same manner as sport skydives (paraphrased sport dives are legal but tandems would be illegal if the waiver was not in place)? If so I can understand the level of apprehension that people have expressed about others doing stupid tandem stuff. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  16. That is very well put. I fail to see the distinction between a stunt or pushing the boundary when a tandem parachute is involved (with all parties consent) and other types of stunt (chuteless jumps etc). The fact that I would not push those boundaries is irrelevant others should be free to. It is interesting watching this debate - I know that there are similar arguments about almost every aspect where people deviate from the "herd". [rant]I have had an employee who was extremely lazy/unproductive for some time but because of his skill set we had been putting up with him as with adequate supervision we were on balance better with him than without him. However economic times being what they are we decided 2 weeks ago to make him redundant - however we did need the 4 week notice to get sufficient handover of his work and a mop up being a small company. Anyhow today (Sunday) I get an email saying he's decided not to come in again without completing his contractual handover period. Result - me having to do emergency rescheduling of my time while desperately trying to keep the business afloat. Oh well he can kiss any reference good by now[/rant] Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  20. "I lost my keys and it must be government conspiracy because the FBI refuse to look for them" - (c) Me 2008. Surely you don't believe that your national crime fighting agency should be looking into where every citizen has been at the whim of another member of the public? When the threads started your story was really interesting and appeared to be based on fact - over the last few months a very different picture has emerged and I strongly believe that you have been hoodwinked by pranksters. I feel very sorry for you as I think you are probably an innocent old lady who hasn't quite grasped that it is very easy to search the internet for information and what you see in the "shadows" for example Georgers supposed access to information is simply savvy internet use (in reality he is more likely to be a spotty faced 15 year old than a CIA/FBI/Galen Cook whoever you seem to think he is) Other people have said it before and I agree - an internet forum is not the place to fight your corner on Duane. I suggest that you create a blog somewhere and try and make a public record of your own that provides a chronology of Duanes life, the missing times and any photo's along with the reasons that you believe that he was Cooper. 21. in keeping with the thread how about Ezekiel 23:20 "There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses." Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  22. thats easy during 1945 to 1950 some little green friends stopped by on a visit from Roswell and spent 5 years teaching high speed exits and levitation techniques to a certain individual in a far away galaxy. This is why the ruse of the "dummy chute" is intended to make us believe he bounced Sorry Jo this is all in jest

  24. Yeah I know that On the brighter side since this thread is about the Golden gate bridge which I understand from the video's is 250ft high instead of the net why don't the base community provide prototype rigs for jumpers? Low cost R&D for base manufacturers if people change their minds on the way down. The rigs can be funded with public money instead of the net - its a win win situation Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  25. Sorry nobody has the "right" to try and kill themselves. My wife is in the middle of a living hell right now as her brother tried to commit suicide circa 10 days ago. She is living and sleeping in intensive care and she has just been given the lovely task of making the decision to turn off life support about 2 hours ago. If people are to have the "right" to commit suicide then it must be in clinical conditions to avoid innocent people having to deal with the shit that follows.
