  1. That is an interesting observation. Assumming a person with experience of exiting a jet - provided they had not always been first out - would know about the pressure waves. I don't understand this. There was no one jumping out of 727s with stairs attached when Cooper jumped. C-141 was side exit What pressure wave experience would anyone have in 1971?? I understood that the general discussion of late had been the potential that someone with previous experience or knowledge of 727 could be involved. 2. On what basis or assumptions do you think exiting backwards helped him live? As a side note - did you know that a very large number of people who panic on exiting an aircraft go into the fetal position? Lastly I wish that you would drop the insistance that Duane was Cooper and your vendeta against the FBI - posts like the one I am replying to show a large amount of careful thought and observation and you could probably contribute quite alot if you lost the bias. 4. If it has to do with Duane you need to dig 2" more than you did. Let me expand while(evidence != Duane) { dig; check your orifaces; report; } Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. In all honesty I doubt it would meet the legal requirements. I would be especially cautious on aircraft as even if there is no effect if there is an accident/problem it would probably come to light. It "might" be possible to do a site survey with the equipment where you essentially claim that the unit is fitted to that model of aircraft following specific guidelines and providing documentary proof that the re-radiation is contained. In all honesty I doubt that a pilot would notice any effect with a working unit. Bearing in mind the "offset" error on a working system is at most the length of the aircraft. One point worth noting is that from the FCC point of view it is the normally manufacturer or reseller who is liable and not the user. Since I know nothing about aviation laws or rules that may not apply to its use on aircraft. Certainly in the EU the regulators would pursue the manufacturer/importer not the end-user (again from a Radio and not Aviation perspective). 7. I think you will find that in the user manuals of the device if they are truly legal it tells you to ensure that the re-radiating element is only used in a screened or shielded room. Another "trick" that they do is to put in the user manual that you should not operate the equipment within the country. Example wording "It is illegal to use this equipment with the UK, ensure that you comply with local laws when using this equipment". If you want to know more details then CFR47 Part 15.205a details restricted operating frequencies and GPS (1575MHz) is one of them. The wording is Re-radiating is clearly not a spurious emission but an intentional radiator, so I do not see how any unit can be legal in the US without being in shielded aenvironment. I don't know how accurate GPS on aircraft are but when you re-radiate you are providing the co-ordinates of the receive antenna of your re-radiator. At the very least the distance between your antenna and the aircrafts will come into effect so the aircraft could report that it is 20-30ft from where it actually is. But more importantly if your re-radiator has poor signal quality or can't get lock and you re-radiate that signal neither will the aircraft be able to get lock. 8. I doubt that. You can not make/code valid GPS signals by yourself. Yes you can and yes that is exactly what expensive "re-radiators" do (demodulate and then remodulate). - actually it is fairly simple to do. More of a concern to me would be the legality. In the EU re-radiating units are not legal unless they are used in screened room. I imagine FCC Part 15 has the same restrictions, because the GPS frequencies are effectively licensed by the US government. By re-radiating you WILL affect any GPS instrumentation on the aircraft and there is a chance that if your equipment fails it could block the aircraft from receiving GPS. As someone already mentioned you might get away with using 2 GPS antenna's back to back (make sure they are passive antenna's). You could possibly rig up a simple system for less than $25 doing this. You might be able to couple enough signal to get maintain lock. In acquisition mode GPS needs a much higher signal level than tracking or locked mode. If you want details or part numbers to try send me a pm. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  9. I don't agree with tipping in a sport or hobby situation and I think this whole topic is a reflection of what NickDG talks about with the commercialization of skydiving. It used to be that instructors were weekend warriors etc who taught for fun or "to give back to the sport". I am not naive enough to think that skydiving can return to that lifestyle. Tipping increases the cost and therefore the ability of many people to participate in something that is already very expensive. I accept that tandems are a one off lifetime experience and therefore the whole beer tradition does not really apply. I know that in the US you have a culture of tipping - personally I have grown to hate it. It becomes a cultural "norm" you feel pressured into tipping 10-20% to someone in a restaurant that has spent less than 5 minutes of their time attending to you. I might earn alot more than the 20 year old waiter but with a family and being the only earner - I can tell you my 9 year old has more disposable income than I do Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  12. It is funny how we perceive breaking certain laws does not make us "real" criminals I wonder if that is how petty burglars feel? Anyway as a biker and a parent I am totally against cellphone use, islamic head-dress while driving and speeding. I don't speed (even on the bike) and I sincerely wish people would realise just how damaging to THEIR life driving without due care and attention can be. 13. Interestingly I have been discussing the "ethics" of remote warfare with my boys (9 years old). Personally while I fully understand the motives behind UAV and other remote operated machines I do believe that they should be limited to surveillance only. I believe that taking the "horror" and risk out of warfare/killing automatically lowers the threshold for decision making and I believe is reflected in the number of civilian deaths in Afghanistan due to Predator strikes. Then in the last few days I saw this news article http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8182003.stm I know that my argument can be extrapolated to fighter planes, bombers and cruise missiles etc and to be perfectly honest the more I think about it the more I believe that if you are going to war - you SHOULD have to risk life and limb, it is a grave decision and the abstract nature has allowed us to take the decision to go to war lightly as it has become a question of economics rather than the loss of sons and daughters. 15. I love a girl who likes to screw Sorry to good to pass up after your other thread - especially since the first time that I heard that said, was when the office manager grabbed a screwdriver to fix a loose doorknob. Said by the lecherous old CAD guy in a room full of engineers. I did feel really embarrassed for her though as there were at least 15 men in the room at the time. 17. I wasn't addressing motivation simply the fact that a non-jumper could have enough knowledge to ask for a front and back parachute. I believe most parachutists even those with only first jump experience would associate a front and back parachute as a "set" i.e they would know that the reserve went on the front and the main on the back. I don't believe that modern piggyback systems existed then - but I don't know. The more I think about it I believe there is a clue in front and back parachute as far as terminology goes. Certainly in the UK adults used different vocabulary than today and I would expect a knowledgeable person to use the correct terminology. Front and back parachutes sounds to me like the way I would describe a T10 type rig to my 9 year old. I would quite like to hear the opinion of the older US jumpers on this? We are told that Cooper put the rig on confidently - the old saying "only a fool goes where angels fear to tread" comes to mind. There is a possibility that Cooper lacked so much knowledge he simply put the harness on - for all we know he didn't even step into the legstraps - not that I believe this last comment. The above is a valid explanation but his age does tend to discount that theory (I think) as it is more likely that an 18-25 year old male will do something that stupid and naive (testerone poisoning). Fear and caution are odd - many people experience more fear on their second jump than the first as they start to understand the dangers and know what to expect. I can imagine that a naive person would assume parachuting to safety to be a very simple step BUT it does not explain the knowledge of 727 air stairs. And oh my god I have just given Jo the next line of her story - Duane had access to 727 "schematics" and had never jumped before it must be true cause that random bloke on the internet told me so Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  18. I disagree I think a large number of non-jumpers "could" have been familiar with front/back parachutes. For example a person who was interested in aviation or paratroopers may have seen pictures, someone with a relative who had jumped and seen photo's or been told stories at Christmas, someone who knew a jumper and had been told "no shit there I was stories..." 19. Jo I seriously think that you need counseling. It sounds like Duane was a pathological liar and you bought his stories hook, line and sinker. There are a huge number of men that fail to separate fantasy from reality and run around telling people that they have done or seen "unique" things to make them feel big in peoples eyes. I've worked for a man who claimed to be friends with Paul Allen (Microsoft's number 2) he pushed the lie to the point that Paul was supposed to be doing a site visit and then just didn't arrive. The sheer number of "unique" events in Duane's life should raise alarm bells. I don't know maybe you are to deep into the whole charade and subconciously are scared that you will go from dB Coopers ex-wife to simply a woman who was scammed by a lying bum - that would be difficult to deal with. I challenge you to name 2 people who are not Presidents/country leaders who have played instrumental roles in more than 1 international event. 25. What am I comparing this thread to? The serious answer - go and look at any of the "other" threads in history and trivia, skydiving and skydiving disciplines - on the whole the threads are serious, well informed debates. I think that the "tone" of this thread is slightly lower than the "naked postwhore glory" threads in Bonfire. As to this forum being any worse on technical quality than other sources on cooper - once you strip away the noise I doubt it.
