[reply Round reserves are still used by a few DZ's (I think, but one I knew of closed a couple of years ago). Most went in the late 80's early 90's to double square rigs. we use round reserves exclusively on student gear because it simplifies the emergency procedures portion of the first jump class. if you have two out, cutaway. simple! we're also a two cessna dz with a large, more-or-less private airfield, and on student loads we still spot by eye and use a wdi. mine is a 170/190 sized rig (I-45) , here. nothing really to reference the size though. it had a 190 sabre in it (and a 175 smart reserve) if that helps. i have a 170 lotus in it now. "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." MB4252 TDS699 killing threads since 2001

about 6 months after creating eve, god comes down to talk to adam and see how things are going: god: "so, how's this woman thing working out?" adam: "great! this sex thing is amazing, thanks! there's one little thing though.." god: "what's that?" adam holds his finger out: "smell this." god: "wow, that's terrible, i wonder what i could do to fix that?" adam: "don't worry, i sent her down to the river to wash." god: "oh no, now all the fish will smell like that!" How to prepare for a hot air ballon jump
kingbunky replied to artemis's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
one other thing to consider, don't rely on your altimeter! you don't know where you will land or what the altitude will be. on my last balloon jump, we ended up following a ridgeline and our only landing option was a road on top of the ridge. i checked my alti when i thought i was around 400, but it was showing 700'+. i thought it must be wrong and eyeballed it. on the ground, it showed 400'. my car battery is mounted in the trunk as well, but it's mounted in a recess below the level of the trunk floor. i have my gear in a bag as well, so i'm not concerned about contamination. not sure what kind of car you have sunshine, but i was told mine was in the trunk for balance. if i didn't have air conditioning, the battery would be under the hood. i just know it's convenient if i give someone a boost, i have access to power from either end of the car! we were discussing this at work yesterday. what we came up with is if it ain't running, jumping, swimming or throwing stuff, it doesn't belong. any and all artistic events should be gone, leaves too much room for politics to play into the results. if you can't measure it, get rid of it. sure, that might make the games boring, and people would quit watching, and sponsors would quit paying for advertising, countries would stop supporting athletes, and *gasp* maybe it would go back to just a bunch of amateur athletes doing it for national glory and love of the game. that would be refreshing. i like shazam. if you hear a song somewhere and want to know what it is, open the app, hold the phone so it can 'hear' it, about 30 seconds later you have artist, album, links to the itunes store to buy it and youtube vids related to it. price:free i picked up netshare while it was available, and it works well. it's a tethering app, lets you use the iphone's 3g connection as a proxy for your laptop. price:$10 ipint, pointless app that lets you drink a virtual beer. gets the most incredulous looks. price:free more cowbell, another kinda pointless app that lets you play a cowbell along with any song you're playing. if you stop, christoper walken pipes up with 'i gotta have more cowbell'. price:free "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." i found that the finger strap moved the altimeter onto your hand, as opposed to your wrist. for solo jumps, either will work fine, but once you try some rw, it's nice to have the altimeter off the wrist so that it doesn't get blocked by someone taking a wrist grip. we did one a couple years ago (and plan another one soon!) where we had 3 classes, up to 99 jumps was junior, 100 - 299 was intermediate and 300+ was senior. exits were from a 182, one pass. fastest canopy out first on about a 10 second delay, 2nd out was about 7, 3rd was 5 and the last guy basically dumped off the step. in addition to this, there was about a 5 second delay between jumpers. this spaced everyone out pretty good. we had a 10m graduated circle drawn out, with 0 points for touching down in the centre, 1 point added for every metre out from that to a maximum of 10. you had to stand up the landiing for it to count. everyone one did 3 jumps, low score won. for added fun, schedule the last round at the end of the day and make it a hit-and-chug! put down a marker (we used an aluminum pie plate), 10 m away you put a chair. have a volunteer standing by with a glass of beer. touch down, touch the target, get to the chair, sit down and chug. timer starts when you foot hits the ground and stops when you show an empty glass. it was interesting seeing the various strategies. mine was to basically swoop the target (swooping is a relative term, i jump a lotus 170) and tapping the target on the way by, touched down beside the chair and slammed the beer. elapsed time was (i think) 7.8 seconds. travel light, pack right, carry everything on. onebag.com. you'll spend a bit more time at security, but save it on the other end when you walk out the door and everyone else waits, sometimes in vain, for their luggage. of course, if you're travelling with a rig, that changes things. i came across the attached pic on Dark Roasted Blend today. the caption says "Wings for Paratroopers. Designed and tried out in 1935 (!) by the Russian engineer Safronov". looks plausible i suppose, anyone here know anything more about it? yup, gotta love the chuck's. i like the long laces because i can tie them with large loops in the bows, then use them to tie a second bow. maybe it's a belt and suspenders thing, but i haven't lost one yet. we've had both. i really like ferrets because they're smart, inquisitive, social and they have actual personalities. chinchillas mostly sit around and poop. never really saw the point of them but my daughter liked hers.
