someone just sent me a pm explaining the different way of looking at wingloading. the 150 i mentioned was a 200 jump minimum wingloading, not for now! it would likely be too small, even if you thought it was okay. the fact that you realize that puts you way ahead of a lot of jumpers!
-
i think you got the math a bit backwards there. exit weight / canopy size = wingloading so, at 174 exit weight, at 1:1, you shouldn't jump anything smaller than a 174 (or the next size up, a 190 as previously suggested). at 200 jumps (1.2 rule-of-thumb wingloading), you would be looking at 174/1.2 or something in the 145-150 range. these are not absolutes! a lot depends on skill, fitness, currency, dz location etc... While packing a reserve I noticed that someone had written their phone number on the reserve bridle with a sharpie. Seems like a good idea, but I'm wondering if the ink could damage the fabric. I've pulled and stretched the area around the writing, and it seems as solid as the rest of it. Are there any good reasons not to do it? WWDC is apple's world wide developer's conference. they usually announce new products there. lately, it has been focused on the iphone, but they sometimes sneak in other stuff. the imacs were just refreshed a couple months ago, and the laptops were all revamped in the fall so i wouldn't expect anything major in those lines. rule of thumb, if you see apple products on sale, new models are coming! if that is all you do online, the low end imac will suit you fine. if you want portable, the low end macbook will work well. i converted a couple of years ago, and it would take something awful cool from redmond to get me back in the windows camp. i'm a gadget freak, so i replace stuff with shinier stuff whether i need it or not! right now, between my wife and i, there is a macbook pro (about 2 years old) a macbook (same thing) and two 24" imacs that were purchased since christmas. oh, and two iphones, and an airport extreme. i still have my first gen nano, and my wife still uses hers at the gym. yes, i like me some apple stuff. i watched that with the missus last weekend. i figured, hey, vampire movies are okay. i liked blade, i liked underworld, how bad could it be? it was a freaking chick-flick love story that happened to have a vampire in it. i had to watch the transporter again right after just to get my testosterone levels back to normal. some of our student rigs had them, and because of the heavy use they got the velcro always seemed worn out and would let go at the worst moment. i think that if you have a canopy sized for your rig, and decent packing skills, you don't really need one. ymmv

something about a friendly competition that will make you do silly things. my only two ass-landings in the last 300 or so jumps have both been on hit'n'chugs. "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." MB4252 TDS699 killing threads since 2001

can someone with a lotus 170 tell me how big their slider is? i'm asking because mine is very snivelly opening (1000 ft +/- 200) consistently. i bought the canopy new and have 250 jumps on it, and nothing i have done with pack jobs has had a significant effect on it. i load it about 1.3:1. what happens, as far as i can see, is the bag lifts off, the lines release properly and i have a canopy at the right stage of deployment up till then. the slider stays at the canopy for what seems like forever, then when it finally comes down, the canopy will inflate and take off in a random direction. i'm thinking that a slider that is too big may be the cause. mine is about 25" x 31". just for comparison, since the canopy is often compared to a sabre 2 170, how big is the slider on one of them? i've sent brian an email, but haven't heard back yet. my wife's only complaint is that she keeps losing track of my gnome when we get in a crowd, and they are a funny looking pair. i get bored easy and like to go all leeeeroy. it's fun to throw an aoe on a pack of mammoths, then use the death grip to yoink another one in! i'm a nerd, but the season is upon us, and i have 3 reserves in the basement to pack, and a couple more on the way so it's almost time to knock it off for the summer. wow for me! my main toons are a 76 gnome death knight named lemmie that i play with the missus (and her matching 76 night elf death knight) and my 74 gnome warlock i solo with. i have a bunch of others, but none that i play a lot. i used to have a 70 tauren druid, (pre WotLK) but i got pissed off at the game and deleted him. the way people reacted you would have thought i killed a friend. some people take it way too seriously. i dunno. to make a call you have to hit a button (pretty much any one will do), then swipe to open the phone. if you have a lock code, you have to enter it. then you have to pick the phone app, then pick a number off you favourites list, pick one from contacts or enter a number. if it's locked, i think you have an option to make an emergency call, but that's about it. too many things have to happen in the right order to make a call for it to happen by accident, with any regularity. now that i look at it, it's actually a lot of steps to make a phone call! good thing i don't use it for that much. Thinking about packing my own reserve.

as i mentioned in another thread, this is a weird community. goof threads turn serious, serious threads go right sideways into fuckery. should start a '6 degrees of separation' game. open a thread at random, read the 6th post and see if it relates to the original. half the time, it probably doesn't.
