"I think we are arriving at the crux of this matter, and that is, non-gun-owning leftists tend to withhold trust of their fellow human beings. They assume the worst of their fellow human beings. They live in fear of their fellow human beings. And then they insist that they do not need guns for protection." I'm sorry, I'm not following your rationale here. You're saying that we don't trust others and think they will attack us, ergo we don't carry weapons to defend ourselves against such an eventuality? "They assume the worst of their fellow human beings." Why do you carry a gun if you don't think your fellow human being will attack you? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Boy Scouts of America and Religous Discrimination

"Scouting helped shape me into the person I am today more then anything else. For that I will forever be in debt to the Scouting movement and will continue to support them." I couldn't hav eput it better myself Phree. Likewise, in addition to shaping me, it has also given me a some valuable lifetime friendships, many of my current friends are people I met through Scouting, and I'm getting on a bit now. It appears the BSA are organised and operated slightly differently over there. I think the sectarian nature over there may preclude some kids from gaining the benefits we have both enjoyed, and thats sad. Like I said, I'm pretty sure this is not what Baden Powell intended when he wrote Scouting for Boys. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. I reckon "The Godless Buzzy Beavers" is a better moniker. But I don't honestly think the current administration would support funding either organisation. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Och Akela, I'm good with the spiritual aspects of Scouting, no harm in my eyes, in fact.. "The Scout Movement includes Members of many different forms of religion. The following policy has received the approval of the heads of the leading religious bodies in the United Kingdom. " http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/library/hqdocs/por/2003/chapter_2.htm I'm moaning that other people see something more sinister. -
Boy Scouts of America and Religous Discrimination
nacmacfeegle replied to Unstable's topic in Speakers Corner
Scouting is a great institution, but correct me if I'm wrong, the Scouts Promise required that the oath taker promises to do his duty to 'God and to the Queen', in this country anyways. I think the spirtual element of the kids' development as part of the goal of the Scouting movement is pretty much de-facto. I recall saying the Lord's prayer at Scout meetings, attending remembrance day parades at churhces etc as a Scout. It would be a great shame if religious nuts forced the organisation to recant a lot of this structure just because someone got their knckers in a twist over it. I'm pretty sure Baden Powell intended Scouting to be non-sectarian, its just that spiritual guidance as part of any kid's development is seen as religious brainwashing by some, and its not brainwashing, in my experience. Heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, whatever, does not mean that they are paedophiles, so I don't see what the issue is. I know some pretty nasty heteros that I wouldn't want my wee boy hanging out with, and some more than decent homosexuals that I would not hesitate to leave my child in the care of. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. In Scotland it is a total ban in enclosed pubs, and other licensed premises. I think Kev is referring to a different war, a different set of circumstances, I think he's referring to Dresden, Koln, Nagasaki, Hiroshima etc. Wow, busy thread, I don't think there is much more to be said about this apalling, regrettable incident. I say regrettable as it will make the fight to remove the troublemakers from Iraq all the harder. I fear the insurgents in Mosul, Baquba, Samarra etc will be even more galvanised to slug it out. Not really much incentive to surrender if you face electrocution, ritual humiliation, and/or summary execution, or at least thats the way the insurgency's propoganda will paint it. This incident will cost more pain to both the coalition and the civilians, whichever way you look at it, this is not good. Its not the first time that embarassment (of this type, in this conflict) like this has ocurred, its the first time its been filmed. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4018171.stm -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. I'm a smoker, banning smoking in pubs is a good idea IMHO, here's why. Under the Health and Safety at work act, it is the employer's responsibility to protect its workforce from the hazards of their workplace. It has been shown that passive smoking is dangerous to non-smokers. Ergo illness from passive smoking becomes an industrial disease. How can pub landlords protect their bar staff from passive smoking, and also protect themselves from compensation claims down the line when their bar staff start suffering from smoking related illness? So we either double/triple/quadruple the price of our already expensive beer to cover the insurance companies inevitable hikes, or we remove the hazard from the workplace. And it will help me cut down/stop smoking, and thats a good thing, right? "I think I feel that a ban on public smoking in enclosed places is a good thing. I generally am libertarian about such things, but don't think smoking should really be a protected activity, because unlike most, it cannot be kept to oneself." Its nice to agree with Jeffrey for a change.

Hmm, I see what you mean. It also has a built in lens cover, I'm imagining a slide thingie that keeps dust off when the cam is not in use. So I'm not entirely sure that this will be able to take a wide angle, well not a conventional one anyways. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Interesting (non-partisan) article analyzing terrorists.
nacmacfeegle replied to SpeedRacer's topic in Speakers Corner
"Then it got moved here to Speakers Corner. And it was ignored here due to its non-partisan nature." Obviously there is no place in this forum for factual, non controversial postings. To me, the piece is incomplete, it merely describes one flavour of terrorist, there are many including ETA, IRA, Hamas, Hezbollah, etc. It kind of annoys me that people talking about terrorists tend to focus only on AQ, even though it is understandable, it does niggle me. I grew up with the Baader Meinhoff, Red Brigades, IRA, and Black September/PLO/PLFP etc filling the headlines, those were really confusing times. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "There it is, the hidden secret: Great Britain is armed." For every day concealed carry, one of those little domestic 1Kg dry powder jobs will do. http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=113152 Easily concealed under a light jacket, and they come in a variety of grip styles to suit every hand. They also look pretty innocent on open display in a car, or around the house, in the pub etc. Thats okay for stopping an assailant that might surprise you, but not an awful lot of good for stopping a determined attack. In that situation I'd recommend something along the lines of a 3.5kg carbon dioxide unit. http://www.wormald.com.au/fireproducts/commercialfireproducts/extinguishers#c02 These have heavier walls to the cylinder and so are more likely to stop even determined attackers. The discharge horn can give you extended reach if you have time to prepare for the onslaught. If you hit a perp with one of these babies, he won't be getting up for quite a while. The capacity and medium stored makes it a better all round fire extinguisher too. If you ever get the chance to have a play on a fire training ground (such as the excellent facility at Bryan College Station--nods at Aggiedave) I'd recommend one of these twin agent units http://www.firecombat.com/ftwin.htm They are a little overkill and difficult to conceal for everyday use, but great fun nevertheless. Remember, fire extinguishers don't kill people, people kill people. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Hey folks, remember this? http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=460643;search_string=galloway;#460643 and this http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1056547#1056547, which is really the same story as you are all getting panties twisted up about, again. Regarding the first story I linked to, everyone said George Galloway was as guilty as sin, well now he is getting rich from libel cases, and still walking about free, actually, I think he is still an MP in Glasgow. I'd wait and see what the final report has to say, probably some shenanigans involved, but there's plenty of time to get to the truth. Personally, I wouldn't trust an awful lot of ostensibly pre-war paperwork coming out of Iraq. You've all been duped before, its dead easy to get duped again. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "At any rate, how do you presume to judge him?" I wasn't aware I was judging anyone. I didn't say whether this guy was right or wrong, I didn't question his actions. I merely said that if the cameras were running, I probably wouldn't shoot a wounded person in the back of the head. Have another Red Bull PJ, it will calm you down a little. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "You calling me a troll?" Not if you are going to whine personal attack...again. It all depends on the purpose of the 'snub', why would you 'snub' an entire nation anyways? "What this request tells me is that you simply think I am LYING, or FABRICATING either the article, the quote, or both." Not in this particular instance, I was merely asking for more information on your source. It appears you may have posted the entire article, which does, correct me if I'm wrong, I'm no proof reader, contain incomplete sentences. "Here is an online article -- on the BBC site -- in which the same quote appears that appeared in the article I transcribed. Satisfied? " Much better, you're really starting to get the hang of this. "I'll disregard the personal attack on the alleged commonness of my arguments being "pointless" I really don't see a personal attack there, if I've upset you sensitive feelings, please take my apologies. Okay we digress....again. "his comments, no matter where they appeared, go toward proving what brits here have been denying: that they feel that british gun control should be implemented in the U.S." No they don't, and seeing the statement in context convinces me of this even more. I don't see anyone from the much more detailed link 'pushing' gun control on anyone. What I feel, and what I 'push' or try to shove down your throat, are two entirely different things, can't you see that? I see people from Dunblane sympathising with the people of Littleton (Colombine?), offering help and support to fellow parents, teachers, victims, social leaders etc in the aftermath of what can only described as an apalling incident. Most of the people in the much more detailed link will have experienced a similar situation to the people of Littleton. All they are doing is reaching and saying 'hey we understand what you are going through, maybe we can help, we've been there ourselves'. I don't see people swearing, losing the rag, and shouting at americans to give up their guns. But you and I see things differently, don't we? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Certainly in the UK you would be jailed for killing someone who wanted to burn your house (without you in it) And would be surprised if you are allowed to in the states." To be fair, thats going to depend on the state you are in (the american government can't make their minds up about this, so we have no chance), I'm pretty sure if you tried this in Texas you could be shot by the homeowner. But in a different scenario, if the guy was wounded, lying on a mosque floor, and about to be taken prisoner, I probably wouldn't shoot him in the back of the head, certainly not if there were any journalists around. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4014901.stm -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "I do that as a snub. I guess it worked!" Yeah, my bad, the rules say don't feed the trolls. "If you wanted to, you could verify it." Well y'see, many people take statements like this out of context. Its become something of a tradition here that if you are goingto post something even remotely controversial, you give details of the source, or some other supporting information. What you gave us was an incomplete sentence from an obscure quote from 5 years ago. Thats open to misinterpretation. The fine documentary journalist, the internationally respected, and award winning Mr Moore does this all the time, its one of his very few flaws. You don't have a scan of the article that we could see in its entirety do you? I'm guessing George voiced his wish in response to the sad Colombine incident, where a couple of gun nuts went out and killed some kids for shits and giggles, but you probably know more about that than I. What he didn't obviously do was go on air, on an american network, and publicly incite american gun freaks to give them up. I'm guessing he said it on a radio programme that was intended for broadcast in Britain. In which case, your entire argument here is kind of pointless. No change there then. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Getting started in video/photography-questions
nacmacfeegle replied to PROGRESSIVE's topic in Photography and Video
"First question, does the 120 mph wind + damage the electronics in the camera, such as the audio." Not in my experience, but some tape and a wee bit of rubber foam can be used if you are worried. "Also, not that I'd ever jump thru a cloud, but does the moisture from the cloud create problems in the camcorder, or its electronics?" Again, not really, its more annoying that moisture from clouds will build up on the lens, and you may experience the camera shutting down at some point due to internal moisture, but normally well after the jump where it got wet. "Is anyone still using the Sony Hi 8 camcorder these days?" Not as popular these days as they once were, MiniDV is the way to go, due to better quality and smaller cameras, in most cases. A D-box, or camera condom, or any sort of enclosure will go some way to protecting your camera from moisture/noise, minor knocks and scrapes etc. "Is there a software package where I can down load my videos from my HI 8 as well as my PC350 and edit them, add music, etc? " Yes, however the signals from your Hi8 are completely different to digital signals from the PC350, you can use the same software, but you will need different interface cards, see below. Better to hose your footage from the Hi8 onto the PC350 via the S-video connection (the round socket with several connectors in it), you will also need to connect the audio signals for transfer of any audio, if thats important, as S-video is video only. I'm assuming you don't know of anyone who has a Digital8 camera, in which case you get better image transfer, but digi8s are very rare. If you are just starting to play with video editing, you need to work out what the final destination for your edit is, DVD/MINIdv/web etc. I'm goingto assume you will edit in native DV format, and transfer to VHS later, you will need an IEEE1394 card, don't be alarmed, they are widely available, I'd recommend you buy something from ADS. http://www.adstech.com/products/intro/products.asp Their cards come bundled with enough software to get you started, without causing you too much financial pain. Once you feel happy with the card, the edit process etc, you will probably want to upgrade to Premier from Adobe, or similar, ask here before you commit, the software can be expensive. -
Would I shoot?
