"I must evidently be one of those "below 100 IQ conservatives"... " Don't worry, you're not alone. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Thomas Jefferson

Sony Cameras with an E on the end of them are deisgned for use in Eurpean countries, we have a different TV standard over here (PAL here, NTSC over there), unless you have European (PAL) VCRs, edit gear etc, you are likely to have heartaches. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Lieutenant Harbord died a British citizen serving in the American Army.... She was then presented with her brother's flag the proper fashion. " Nice story, a classy and dignified tribute. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. I watched the Ozzies beat my brave and noble athletes last sat at Hampden. If England are on form, they should beat them. I'm going to make a wish, rather than a prediction.... Scotland beat South Africa. Australia to beat England. I reckon both matches will be entertaining, regardless of the result though. Wales against the All Blacks was the best game of the autumn test so far.....

The Scots are here, we've been here all day as we don't follow those pagan holidays. Upside is, its almost beer time, and all the bars are open.

A lot is going to depend on where you live Rich, a little more info on your profile (look at top left of your screen) might help, or just tell us what country you are in.

A very cool 'feel good' story I want to share with my friends.

You are getting way too soppy. way too sensitive to be a redneck. Fix your head and get back in the air, only then will we give you back your Guy Card.! Happy Thanksgiving man. -
"They DO have oil... Don't they?" Ukraine has around 300 potentially viable oil and gas fields, of which about 200 are currently being worked. Its a net impoter of crude, primarily from Russia, Ukraine exports a lot of petroleum products, mainly via the Bosperous, and land pipelines to Europe. But Yukos (big Russian oil company) is in the process of going pear shaped. All their executives are in the process of fleeing the country, so there goes 20% of Russia's production, about 2% of global oil production. Ukraine's energy profile here. http://www.worldenergy.org/wec-geis/edc/countries/Ukraine.asp Gas is the big thing in Europe, with a declining demand for fuel oil for electricity generation, Ukraine is one of the world's largest gas consumers.

"America got military bases on the doorstep of a future German dominated Europe." Or a Soviet dominated Europe? Just stirring the pot a little for some friday fun. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "If Europe doesn't like what is happening there, it's their problem - let them do something about it." I don't think 'Europe' will do anything about it. Intervening in a civil war is always tricky John, even the highly regarded UN is normally reluctant to get involved unless there is some sort of humanitarian crisis, such as ethnic cleansing etc. This one is really interesting, there has ostensibly been some sort of shenanigans going on, and the Ukranians are having none of it. The party objecting are pro EU, the party accused of shenanigans are loyal to the old Russia. Putin would obviously like to have the Ukraine 'on his side', however the world is watching now, and he is trying very hard to get the rest of the world to be more sympathetic to his causes, so he'll have to tread carefully. Its all about power inflence. I really hope this situation can be resolved peacefully, so far its been a fairly well behaved 'uprising', I just don't know how this will pan out. "Hey, I know what to do: Let's start a food-for-oil program in the Ukraine, and then France and the U.N. will jump in to siphon off profits intended for needy people." If the Ukraine has oil, why haven't you invaded already? Come on what are you guys waiting for, oil at 100 bucks a barrel? I mean there must be some excuse you can conjure up... hidden nukes, terror training camps, really bad guy in charge, potential to destabilise the region, lack of obvious democratic process?

"Just as religion did not disappear after Galileo demonstrated the earth is not at the center of the universe" Centre of the 'known universe', surely? In an infinite universe, everywhere is at the centre of the universe, right? Surely in an infinite universe, the earth, or any other point has equal amounts of universe all around it, infinity either side as it were, so geometrically the earth, and everywhere else, is technically at the centre of the universe. Taking it one step further, it could be argued that the universe really does revolve around ME! Something I've known for quite some time. If there are boundaries to the universe, ie its not infinite, where are they, and what lies beyond the boundary? A bit abstract for speaker's corner, especially at 8am here, but it makes nice change to squabbling about guns, god, gays, and George. And its more fun than knocking my pan in to make Halliburton richer. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "And there were dinosaurs too! There's proof, although they're not here anymore." If only they had guns 'n knives, they would still be around. Dayumm, wrong thread. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "That's hardly the UN's fault - it's the fault of the member states - ie US, UK etc." I was sort of driving at that in my chats with Ron. You have a better way with words than I. "blame your domestic leaders who fail to exercise their power within the security council to change matters" So its all Bush's fault then. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Perhaps the solution is to create a law enforcement component?" Could be, but surely 'local rules' apply. Lets assume the bribery etc was being done out of the UN headquarters, wouldn't American laws apply? If a UN staffer committed murder in the UN headquarters, surely the US justice system would have jurisdiction. MrM2? any clues on this one? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "I suspect the corruption is deeper than we will ever know." Could be, no real way of knowing,, the only report published on the whole debacle to date had names of companies/individuals removed, US based companies and individuals, specifically. Organisations all over have been through similar allegations, Iran/Contra over there, Westland and Matrix Churchill over here. It doesn't mean that the entire government structure should be disbanded and we start all over again. Why should it be the case with the UN? What normally happens is that there is a witch hunt, obvious witches are publicly burned at the stake, and then its back to business as usual. Also bear in mind, many of these alegations are based on dodgy paperwork found in Iraq, same source as those alegations that would have had George Galloway swinging from a gibett, he's still at work, as an MP....... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Thats like saying the barrel isn't rotten, just the apples in it." Almost, but in his instance its just a few of the apples, and unless they are quickly exorcised, they will spoil the entire barrel, and the reputation of all apples everywhere. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "The UN is not corrupt. There are corrupt members. It's better than nothing and should be fixed. Not thrown out and done away with." Are you sure you're not a European socialist? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "I'm not about to install a sprinkler system over this..." Hell, I can do that for you for free, easy peasey, lemon squeazy, but PM'd anyways. "Thumb tacking a load of condoms full of water to the ceiling did briefly cross my mind though" I've had (alegedly) smart people suggest similar but bigger. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "A One World Order is not a good idea." I think thats he basis of our different opinions. I still uphold the old Euro-Socialist (I am after all, a European Socialist)idea of a One World Utopia. We are going to have to agree to disagree on whether the UN is potentially a good thing, or a bad thing. Or even whether this Utopic dream is a nightmare. We can both bump our gums about it for a long time to come, and not change anything. Okay?
