I'm currently looking at replacing my 'old school' VCR with a new DVD recorder. I'm a big Sony fan, so have not really examined Panasonic, Phillips, etc yet. I'm currently pondering either the Sony RDR GX700, or the RDR-HX900, the 900 has a hard drive on board so you could have a stock leader saved there, and you would simply hose in the new footage, then do some basic assembly editing. If you are editing on say a PC or an analogue board, you may not need the hard drive, or even the firewire connectivity. Firewire (IEE1394, I-link, whetever) input is important to me personally, and the multi format capabilities of the Sony models appeal to me. Downside is you cant really vary the output quality to suit content duration, eg there are pre set quality modes, but nothing in between (standard setting allows 2 hours on a DVD, so if your movie is mlonger, you just have to take the next setting down, which seems daft to me!). And the editing capability seems pretty basic. Not really a deal breaker to me, as I intend upgrading my PC with a DVD burner soon too, so time shifting and archiving long movies should not be a huge deal. I'm going to buy a multi-region modified version.
