I thought I was the only one. Great movie but seeing brutality so realistically presented is a bit disturbing. I'm not one for gratuitous violence, but I find war violence tolerable, in fact I prefer it over benign movies such as The Longest Day, that make war seem almost glamorous. I feel the same with the scourging of Christ. So many Easter/Jesus movies do not show what took place. Often they use 39 lashes which was Israel's code, NOT Rome's. The Romans beat Christ near to death. It was one of the reasons he died fairly quickly by normal crucifiction standards. steveOrino

Do you believe in God? NBC this morning had a poll on this question.

Put me in that group. Much to do about nothing. steveOrino -
10/10 but I "reasoned" one question. I forgot what "^" means. steveOrino

This is why I don't buy repair insurance or send anything in to be repaired. A Sony HC20 can be had for $125 on Ebay and a Sony HC40 for $200 -$300 on Ebay. Over the past two years I have bought four cameras, but sold the "broken" cameras on Ebay on "as is" auction and made 75% of my money back. Plus I'm not out a camera for weeks on end. steveOrino

sounds like you are a natural. Way to go! steveOrino

Me, I don't remember the "leg's" name. I do remember him asking me what I was going to do, and I replied, "SF, Sgt!" He just smirked and said, "Yeah, right!" Well, I proved him wrong. I went through SF "Q" course in '77-'78 and served on ODA 552 Co B 2nd BN 5th SFG. I went to UWO (SCUBA) school too. I believe I got the last smirk in. Now, I do remember one of the three Drills was named Sgt Bishop. The dude was 6'8". He was hard to forget. steveOrino

to "me" the rock cimber looks more like a guy "hanging on" than rock climbing. I like the others better. steveOrino -
I have booties on my main suit and they are helpful to close any gap fast. But now I'm beter able to fly on all axis and the booties are not desired. In fact they are a pain when I transition to a sit on tandem's deployment. Thus I ordered a new Bev suit that should be here today! Woot! steveOrino

You might want to reconsider that. He's a third degree black belt in American Karate. I saw him test for his "stripe" a few years back. OMG. I don't think I'd mess with him. He broke 5 BIG boards with his hands, feet and head in about 5 seconds. That was enough to convince this ex Green Beret he should remain my friend, and never my enemy. Of course karate is pretty useless gainst a 9mm. steveOrino

I had a friend "help" me with my computer ... crash! I haven't got the FTP program (loads to web) up yet. Sorry. steveOrino

Yep, I carry an extra battery in the cargo pocket of my suit. If in doubt -- I put it in. I keep 4-5 batteries ready at all times. steveOrino

Being a scuba diver I'm deeply saddened by the lost of coral even if it didn't have other ramifications (which it does). I'm not sure if there is a fix. There is certainly not a quick fix. steveOrino

I forgot your other two questions. To me, the biggest step is jumping with students (AFF or tandem) Before you jump with them you should be able to fly your slot without "thinking" about it, much like one runs or wallks. We don't "think about putting one foot in front of the other -- we just do. I believe you need to be able to fly that way before you go with students. If you are always trying how to figure out how to fly at video level and how to turn your back to the sun, you're not ready. Recently I had a young perspective vidiot at our DZ say to me he flew great when he didn't have a camera, but his flying skills lacked when he had to also think about getting the shot. IMHO he he isn't ready to fly video yet. He only has about 200+ jumps I think. He has good to better than average flying skills so I believe a few fun jumps with camera and suit will get him into the rotation before Summer. As far as the suit -- that depends. I flew pretty good at the start but at 225# it is hard to fly below a 140#TM with a 90# student if you don't have wings. Some that weigh as much as I can do it but many would be better with wings. Dress for sucess! I "think" wings can be figured out pretty quickly in a few jumps. steveOrino

To be perfectly honest, some of my progression was dictated by finances as much as safety.

Take steps. Add a video w/o site add a site add wings add stills etc. If you try to make your first camera jump with a Bonehead FTP loaded with site/video/still camera/flash in a jump suit with wings -- get ready for problems. Maybe fatal problems. My progression (my not be universally right but worked for me) jumped video with dot on goggles added site added wings added still added flash Be careful, know your skills. steveOrino

How come WE can have them and THEY can't?

A memorable scene from the movie "Glory". A young black recruit didn't know his left from right. The Irish Sgt. stomped on his right foot saying, "This is your right!" He was about to stomp on his left foot saying, "This is your ..." The recruit moves his foot. Irish Sgt, "Now you're learning." steveOrino

If they are staring at the ground the whole dive I will give them a "noogie" (rub their head). Being a Texan living in Okiehoma, I give them the Texas "hook 'em" sign. If they are aware (and an Okie) they usually will give me their lame "down with horns" sign. Of course the TM is aware and he always responds. steveOrino

If my memory of history is correct, his worse crime was dating white women, a sin far greater than beating a white man. James Earl Jones did a movie about him. steveOrino

sensible idea? good idea? bad idea? stupid idea?
steveorino replied to jimmytavino's topic in Photography and Video
As a professional videographer, my point of view is more like we're shooting ourselves in the foot by NOT giving people a T1 video. Let's be honest...most Tandems don't/won't ever want to do this again, and want to show their peeps that they "did it." My thoughts exactly. 80 year grannies skydiving (tandem) on TV has led to many people believing there is nothing to skydiving. They want to try it. I'd say of the 500+ tandems we did last year 90% knew before they ever set foot in the DZ it was going to be a one shot thing. 80% of the remaining 50+ thought it'd be cool, but other things like finances kept them from doing more. 80% of the 5-10 that did another tandem or took AFF never came back. I seriously doubt the video made any difference in their decision. They either got the bug and made the $ work or not. steveOrino
