It does get more difficult as they get older. My youngest is now 25 and I just don't think she is buying into the cootie thing any more. I'm not sure when she made the transition from cootie to cutie but hopefully you will be more successful than I was.

I don't even have to think about my response. You are a nice poster. The "mean" posters time and time again try and belittle other people and it apperars to come easy. On another note I'm sure you would make a great poster boy for some deserving charity. And just so you don't feel bad I meant poster MAN and not poster boy.

Again I totally agree. Different viewpoints make for a healthy environment. I think when people try and assert their opinion in a negative way that this creates a more hostile type of forum. Discussions can escalate and two parties may never agree but IMO disagreements can be done civilly. Even if people absolutely disagree with the opposing viewpoint, I don't think resorting to name calling and other smoke screens is really conducive to a healty discussion . Once again I agree with you. Little things can escalate in a hurry and misunderstanding is a frequent cause of the escalation. However, the environment of a place does help set the tone. For instance if I write something mean and 20 people send me a PM telling me that I was being an asshole that is a different environment than 20 people getting on the bandwagon and helping me to be mean. In the first scenario I might think that I stepped over the line and offer an apology. Of course I might do nothing. However, I believe that public opinion MIGHT help me contrubute to better behavior in the future. If on the other hand I am part of an environment where posters help feed on other posters meaness then again IMO it isn't a postive environment. If the scenario was changed a little bit, the 20 people might post and say "Hey I don't think so and so meant any thing bad" and they might help quell........... the impending chaos.

I absolutely agree with you. People can and do get their feelings hurt too easily based on the nuaunces of written communication over the internet. Sometimes the tone of the sender is much harder to interpret; however, many times the spirit of mean can not be misinterpteted. I guess what I am most concerned about is the attacks that can't be misinterpreted. The internet will always have problems with the former. Well I haven't met HH and I don't really know how he thinks but posting a joke or a news article or something similar to ehance conversation is a far cry from posts about subjects that MOST people would find extreme and tasteless. I believe that is what HH is giving a caution about as well a caution about extra and totally unnecesary noise. Like most people I can say I could probably do more but I always try and help people that need it. That might be helping to change a tire or carrying groceries for the elderly. I am involved with an at-risk child through a school program called GRIP (Great Relationship In Pairs) where we met once a week for lunch and fellowship. I support our church and I think they do good things in our community and abroad. I also try to say Please and Thank You. Well I eat a lot of peanuts and sometimes I do GORP - good old rasiens and peanuts. It seems to work for me and I am also over 40. I also try and stay very hydrated. Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.

I love skydiving with my children and while I would certainly be devastated if they died doing this sport I would be equally devastated if they died in a car accident or from cancer. My children love the sport as much as I do and hopefully skydiving like camping helps us stay connected. It varies from year to year. The warmest year was around 50 degrees and the coldest year was -35 with the wind chill. The ride is held the first weekend in Feb and goes regardless of the weather. If you meant RAGBRAI it is held the last full week of July and the temps are typical midwest summer temps. IBTL I agree with Spence. A murderer does not have to send out a notice to the community. Hell maybe ANY convicted felon should have a scarlet letter. Although I would bet that it would be hard to try and start over in a community when a person has a scarlet letter. But hell they are all guilty and don't deserve a second chance right. It is below zero outside and my stash of JD is helping to warm me up nicely. My wife is drinking a merlot. On the plus side it is good cuddling weather.
