  1. FWIW I need no convincing that there are many people that shouldn't be jumping with reserves that they are not ready to fly. This same logic goes for downsizing to a main that they are not ready to fly. Valid points were made by DrewEckhart as well as BillVon and I don't disagree with any of their points. Like I said earlier, jumpers need to do what is best for them based on their circumstances and experience. Hopefully they have the experience to make good decisions. On a similar topic, IF a jumper can't land their reserve then they are jumping the wrong reserve. I don't care if it is a PDR 99 or a PDR 193. If they can't land it safely it is the wrong reserve. It doesn't matter if it is landed in someones back yard or the parking lot at McDonalds or the DZ. If they want to jump a PD143 with a Samuarai 105 hopefully they will be able to fit it in the reserve pack tray. IF they can't then maybe they should reconsider a plan of attack that will let them enjoy the sport in a safer manner. People should know how to read and if the PD website says that a reseve should be used by an expert then IMO non-experts might want to reconsider before picking that option. Ultimately people will do what they want and hopefully they are working with a sound knowledge base that will derive reasonable solutions. YES sometimes canopies dissimilar in size will be the best solution.
  2. I don't think I can count on two hands how many two outs I have seen and I have had one of my own. On one skyvan load alone at couchfreaks in 2006, I saw 4 two outs on one load. They do happen and they will continue to happen for a variety of reasons. However, I am NOT advocating that people jump an unusually small reserve JUST to keep within the recommendation of the PD study. Like BillVon implied, jumpers need to do what is best for them based on their circumstances and experience. I know what works for me based on the canopies that I jump and I assume experienced jumpers will do what they believe works best for them. Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.
  3. It is way less time consuming to go the range
  4. I don't disagree with you; however, the great majority of skydivers will never be in a situation where they will be jumping a canopy of that size. For the select few that are in that group I have already stated that people are free to make their own decisions and I respect their right to do so. Everyone weighs their perception of risk differntly. While a two out situation should be prevented if at all possible that doesn't mean it won't happen. For that reason IMO it makes sense to jump a reserve similar in size to your main. I will now emphasize your point again. That same reserve should also be capable of landing you safely under the most likely conditions that you will see. And I don't want to stir the pot here but that is generally a reserve very similar in size to the main unless like you stated earlier a person is jumping a mega small main. Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.
  5. I thought this was pretty common knowledge but some people want to post statements arguing the opposite. Unfortunately bad information can get people hurt which is why I posted the study. That said, people are free to make their own decisions and I respect their right to do so. Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.
  6. I think most people DON'T wonder about it because of the study that performance design did and the army did testing this scenario. Please read the report listed below and maybe you will change your mind. Of course, maybe you won't. Dual out study by performance design Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.

  8. I don't know if I can answer your question but in many cases jumpers get a reserve that is farily close in size to their main. It may be a little smaller or a little bigger than the main canopy but it is similar in size. The prevaling wisdom is that in case of a two out situation that two canopies that are similar in size will play better together than canopies that are not. Most reserves are seven cell canopies and they are not trimmed to fly aggressively. And while a smaller reserve canopy will generally open faster than a bigger reserve canopy that is not the reason people go small. They go small because there is a limit to what size reserve pack tray will be compatible with a main pack tray that holds a small canopy. The optima reserve is helping to address this issue because it does pack smaller than conventional reserves. 9. You get a lot of bang for your buck at couchfreaks. Free beer, hog roast, chili feed, pork chop dinner, cadilac hot tub, etc, etc. It is an awesome boogie and it has a great vibe. It too has LOs for every skill level. Did I mention they polyester party, the best dressed contest, and the other nightly theme parties?
  10. It is hard to make suggestions without knowing your current skill set but possibly your Dad would be a good starting point. However I will make one important suggestion. Learn how to track well. At breakoff seperation is a life saving skill. Don't depend on the other guy. 11. Hey great update Ralf. Keep up the good work. Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.
  12. Hey Mel, Thanks for the reply and I know there are two sides to every story. Like I said I wasn't trying to attack you personally but I was empathizing with the posters who felt powerless regarding the lack of communication. It has happened to me and I hate that feeling. For the record, I was not implying that you were stealing money but I could understand why the accusation was made. Many reasonalbe people become unreasonalbe people when they can't contact a person regarding customer service issues. This is especially true when weeks go by and a good faith effort to communicate leads to only more frustration. I know based on your post that you were extremely busy and I will not elaborate on what I think should have happened because ultimatley it is none of my business. Good luck with everything. Jim Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.
  13. I can also highly recommend Bram as well. He is all of the things you posted --Personable, Fair,Honest, Consistent, Available. I have also heard good things about Jay Stokes and Kip Lohmiller. For Jay, Kip, and Bram I have heard the emphasis is on helping to teach versus trying to fail. However, for these instructors they do maintain high standards and the rating will be earned. 14. If I had paid someone in another country for two linesets and they didn't contact me for four months or even two months, I would not be happy and could very well file a CRIMIANL complaint with the authorities. That would frustrate the hell out of me. Technology is a wonderful tool and for very little money a business can have email messages sent back automatically that states a person is "out of the office AND also an expected date of return. A voice mail message when calling your office might also work great. Here are my .02 cents. NO communication IS bad business and can very easily be corrected by a variety of means IF a person wants to do so. FWIW I don't see any liable because 1) it sounds like shitty business and 2) it sounds like money was taken and services weren't rendered. Is this theft? Maybe the better question would be "Would this have happened at all if some simple communication had taken place?". I'm not trying to attack you here Mel but I can certainly empathize with the frustration shown by your customers. Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.
  15. Yeah I knew it and that is why I put the laughing faces. However, I'm sure the magic 8-ball takes into account the Bolas factor. Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.
  16. Well try not and do a personal attack like this poster did on another thread and you will probably be OK. Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.

  19. Hey no jokes from me although I will relate a story about my sere school. We had an airforce guy that was standing outside in his black issued pajamas and the cadre asked him a question. He didn't answer it correctly and so they broke some ice covering a water puddle and threw him in it. They asked him the question again and again they didn't like the response and threw him in the water. Now for the classic part. He got out of the water and told the cadre that he quit and that he wasn't going to play anymore. They slapped him pretty hard in the face. Told him that he was a POW and that he couldn't quit. And then they threw him back in the water. I confess I was laughing my ass off on the inside. It was a pretty chilly morning in Brunswick, Maine. 20. Keep em coming I know the repost record is within reach. Everyone needs to strive for excellence and dig deep for this to become reality.
  21. Yeah Congrats. It is one of the few schools that you can't quit once you start. hahahahaha Which one did you go to? Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.
  22. That is creative and funny Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.
  23. Phreezone made this comment at the beginning of the thread and it suggests that the new owners signed a contract requiring a surcharge of $1 to all jumps. I guess I don't quite understand the issue. The new owners told all jumpers about the surcharge and while I can understand bitching about any increase in jump tickets the contract seems to suggest that this would be and will be a ongoing cost of jumping at MileHi. Whether the extra buck goes to the community or improvements at the airport or something else as a jumper I don't see where it really makes a difference. The money is no longer in my pocket. It is semantics to call the surcharge a donation. It is a surcharge. Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.
  24. Yes I have had this work a number of times. I usually end up spending a lot of money on a lot of things to include women, jags, and fine whiskey. However inevitably I wake up and have to go to work
