Outrager said SkymonkeyOne said There are a few problems with correctly assessing performance at the end of a flock. 1) If you are looking at others, you are not flying your best. For obvious reasons, you must look when flying with others(Matt, you can have a field day with this one ). 2) Not everyone is flying in the same direction, that can create interesting illusions to the flyers themselves. See attached picture. Performance in terms of improving glide ratio, is doing the best you can. Not what you can do against others. SkymonkeyOne said I interpret what Yuri said as follows... If genetic engineers can make humans that have bodies better suited to flying...maybe to do with implanting specific bird genes(like the ones for hollow bones, arms reaching the ground and while they are at it, they can add some feathers too) into humans, that would be a definate advancement. I agree with you that the actual experience gained by making repeated flights, makes a flyer better, at what that flyer is repeating. Kris.

Nice Chopshop job. I would not like to get my wingsuit wet. Will check at DZ if they rent out 'water suits' Kris.

If you cannot swim, if that the case, I'd suggest having the boat there at all times when you are jumping or have a flaotation device of some kind when jumping Kjerag. According to the rules of SBK ("Basic rules for B.A.S.E. Jumping at Kjerag") "Before and during jumping from Kjerag and Smellveggen there must be a boat present into the fjord." So there always is a boat in the fjord, just in case somebody wants to take a quick dip to the refreshing water. :) That is comforting. I am starting swimming lessons today. It is pretty stupid that I haven't learn't it yet anyway. Kris.

Tom, That is only partially correct . Unfortunately, I cannot jump from Smell*. Its mostly to do with the water. This year's Norway trip for me is about tracking(possibly Prodigy from Kjerag), practicing running exits and just a whole lot of trekking and breathing some mountain air. *2.4 Glide Ratio is arriving at the Bar at the ITW at 500m. If I am able to consistently do that someday, I will think about Smell. Kris. edited to remove " having better quality video will be useful to folks who want to do that." from the quoted part.

Can you post the details about the various materials available? It would be interesting reading. Kris.

Can any of the Brits send me a copy? I'll make sure I buy the Norges a bunch of beer when I visit

We did a full circle on that one . You have said yourself that you don't know about the wingsuit pattern. Please read about it and understand it. Maybe its time to have a FAQ for skydivers that don't want to fly wingsuits but have concerns about safety. Kris.

What kind of main are you jumping? ---again out of a plane
KrisFlyZ replied to Calvin19's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Calvin, It will be a slam if you don't roll the nose. Like I found out on my first terminal jump(BlackJack 280) Tightly roll the three cells on each side and hide them behind the open center cell. If you search the BASE forum there is a post by Tom that explains this better. I jump a Sab2 170 currently but will be switching rigs to have a Black Jack 240 main. I don't jump enough here in the U.K, so need as much canopy time under the big 7 cells as possible. Kris. -
Thanks Tom

What's your daily/weekly workout routine (non gym)
KrisFlyZ replied to Newbie's topic in The Bonfire
I am walking 4.5 miles back from work each day. Carrying about 20 lbs of weight a stash bag. Try to do the walk in about 50 mins. I do stop at a grocery store that is about half way to buy stuff for dinner and that adds more weight for the second half of the journey. I wish the walk had more of a grade to it. Kris. -
There is such a thing as a sweet spot. Finding it is the fun part . Kris.

Bill Booth said on his skydive radio interview that "If you didn't lose conciousness, it is not a hard opening" He was talking about terminal slider off jumps(When ram air canopis first made their appearance...he mentioned some other methods of making the opening slower but did not go into great detail). Obviously, there has been progress now that we complain about openings that are too fast . Kris

It happens even if you are looking down(like you were standing up and looking straight forward) but are at any angle other than perfectly horizontal. AT 4000' a 10 degree angle off vertical can make you think you are 700' off. Kris.

Congratulations!! Kris.

I did some couch surveying. I started cropping the picture and based on the number of pixels(I know it is not a linear thing but just as to estimate). The tree at the bottom of the slab is 25 pixels high and the cliff is 213 pixels high. The exit point is 8.52 times the height of the tree. But it looks like the overhanging bit is about 2.7 times as tall as the tree is. It is all about how tall the tree is. Kris.

I had read those documents several times and yet broke a few rules that I would never intentionally have broken on a recent trip . Guess, I can only get better . Kris.

Sam(980) was doing this at Eloy in 2004-05 , he got horizontal and climbed way above the plane, I stepped back and spread all my wings...no pop... just pushed back real fast and on level with the plane. Later at Zhills after the ZFlock N dock event, we were doing Hop-n-Flocks, I noticed that I was getting on level or just above with the horizontal stabilizer(and behind it) of the otter after opening my wings. My technique was to get out get horizontal and open wings. This had been my side door airplane exit style for quite a while, I just got more and more comfortable with shorter delays and that made it more noticable. Also we were exiting first(a mile before the non-wingsuit exit point) and the Jumpmaster noticed it. **Opinion** Try various angles of getting above the air plane, you will notice that when you get too 'head high' you will just get pushed back. Horizontal to a bit 'head high' will get you above the air plane. The only force that can lift a wingsuit pilot above the air plane is 'lift' . This comes from the top surface of the wing and if the position is so head high that not much air is flowing over it. You can't get very much above the airplane. **Opinion** Kris.
