  1. Definately wear gloves and dress for the cold. If the airplane you are jumping out of has a simple hose running out of an O2 bottle ( and not a sophisticated system like Mullins airplane)...try to sit near the bottle . If you are looking for the longest freefall time fly in a straight line faced into the wind the entire time if possible with a slightly headhigh position. Kris.
  2. You mean by cutting the wingspan? Is this suit seen in Keen N Able...someone jumping it from Kjerag? Kris.
  3. QuoteI've seen a few people not fly the arm wing completely open (arms a bit bent, or pushed down/drooping), while stretching the legwing completely out/open. This seems to put them in a headlow attitude thats more like diving instead of max flying... Quote Head low is not bad and just being head low does not mean that the WS flyer is in a dive (you know this)....as for the arm wing not being completely open..that is a secret . Infact all my flights with better glide are headlow. Kris.
  4. I have done 7( 4 P + J, 1 tracking 2 hopnpop) not wingsuit jumps this season, two of them were hop-n-pops. The ratio will increase in favour of non-wingsuit jumps though because I'll be tracking (with and without Pants + Jacket) a lot in the next few months. Kris.
  5. My Mirage has the fat cut-in laterals and has not been an issue. I only skip one tab. It does look a bit awkward on the ground but its fine otherwise. My next rig will not have cut in laterals...wait I already have my second rig...racer elite(1983) . If the weather permits I'll be jumping it this weekend. Kris.
  6. Congrats to the winners!! What is the story of the one that won second place? I just don't get that picture...is it a gainer he is coming out of? Kris.
  7. Nice pics!! Looks like a fun event. Luke, It is going to be difficult telling the two of us apart if we are flying next to each other . Kris.
  8. The Edge 305 has a built in feature that makes it beep if any of the parameters being tracked falls in a certain range or exceeds a threshold. Not sure if Grade is one of the available parameters. Will check.... It does not directly support earphones. Kris.
  9. We are on the same page. More than one way to skin a cat
  10. If Jim's suits will fit him.... I have a couple of suits for sale. Try Jeramiah's S3(Silver and black) for size...if it is a bit small. That would be perfect. Kris.
  11. I have attached a different version of the spreadsheet. Just correcting an error with not converting angles to radians(this was an issue in some columns only). Scott, Please illustrate the application of the formulae ( presented in the in the links that you have provided) to the data in the spreadsheet. That would be an interesting read. Kris.
  12. No calculations were used to figure out the wind speed . It is a known, the wind data is from the airport located at the DZ. It must be the name I used for the image files. Kris.
  13. Is this AFF Instructor Ira? Nice one !! Kris.
  14. Formulas are used from this page and others on the Dr.Math forums. http://williams.best.vwh.net/avform.htm http://williams.best.vwh.net/gccalc.htm The wingsuit used for this flight is a Prodigy. The GPS unit is an Edge 305. Other threads of interest yuri_base's thread on how to calculate true L/D on a balloon jump. Costyns thread on how to overlay GPS data on a video. Nice features ============= The edge can be configured to stop recording when the speed falls below a (user selectable) preset. The recording stops when the canopy is open. Bugs ============= 1) Due to the mounting point of the barometric altimeter being at the back of the helmet, there are errors in the altitude reading at some points. The altitude increases at certain points. However, the reading goes back to the correct number once the barometer(head) is in the correct orientation. These points are evident where an altitude gain is shown(in the excel spreadsheet). Weather ========== Upper winds on 30th April 2006 at Headcorn were 30 knots from 320. I have applied this correction and recalculated L/D on the two segments of interest. The interesting thing is that average L/D for the segments of interest( Rows 14-39, 26 secs) while flying upwind is 1.059 and 2.19(Rows 62 thru 91, 30 sec segment) while flying downwind but the corrected L/Ds are much closer for these segments (1.67 and 1.64). The attached picture is a (MB Gravity corrected...altitude is removed) map overlay from motionbased.com. For a rough comparision of calculated bearing to actual. Motionbased actually pulls weather data and can give wind speed and bearing, this is for ground winds only. There is roughly a 60 mph jump in ground speed after the turn. Please feel free to find any inconsistencies with the calculations, etc. Kris.
  15. I was able to pack my BlackJack 280 into an old racermade for a 500 CU Reserve, 550 CU main. The Mojo 280 is bigger than 550 CU...assuming(???) that the BlackJack would be a bit bigger...I guess you can never say until you try packing it into the container. Kris.
  16. Thanks. That is a pretty neat solution. I was reluctant to get anything sewn on to the lateral/rig. That might cause issues when I sell the rig. Kris.
  17. Ted, Can you post a picture of what you did to your rig? I would need to do someting more permanent than gaffer tape . Kris
  18. Good One!! Congratulations!! Kris.
  19. I did a couple of jumps with the Base pouch this weekend and used gaffer tape on the lateral....that worked...I opened around 6K on the jumps as well. Kris.
  20. Buzz jobs will get people banned at U.K DZs. Must be mucho fun though . Kris.
  21. Is this setup different than the one you use with the wingsuit? if so, how? Kris.
  22. Good point on the stall the suit for a split sec. In my experience/opinion...Going a bit head high at pull time has a couple of advantages. 1) The speed is reduced and so is the amount you swing under the canopy after opening. 2) On the bigger suits...BOC deployment + headlow deployment angle increases the chances of wing covering the PC handle. Kris.
