In the hearing that I was involved in, the officer said that he had recorded the incident. Knowing that the recording would show that my friend (whom I was testifying for) was in the right, we were glad there was a tape. But then all the sudden the tape couldn't be found....which is why I testified. I had witnessed the event. But like you said, the judge went with my version of the story and said that the trooper should have produced a recording if he wanted to be believed. And if it goes b4 a judge, who does the judge believe? It's NOT word/word. Last time I testified in court, the issue being argued was my word against an Arkansas state trooper's word. The incident in question wasn't recorded, and the judge believed me....or at least he ruled in our favor. This particular trooper was lying. I've heard similar stories from friends in law school here (that law students won't share notes). It's strange because my medical school class was just the opposite. We ALL shared notes with each other, and we hired a Canner each year for the purpose of taking notes to share with the class. They were posted on our class website. Even though it's competitive, we pretty much all helped each other out. Camaraderie made medical school kinda fun. I'm glad you responded like you did. You take the 2nd job, and you do what you need to do to improve your situation. Working a 2nd job does not equate to emotionally abandoning your children. You can work a lot of hours and still be a good parent....even a single parent (me). I think I'm a pretty good mom. :) A problem, though, is that if you're making so little money that being on welfare would leave you in a similar financial situation as working two jobs, then you'd be hard pressed to find affordable, quality childcare unless you have extended family to take up the slack. Anywhere between 10 and 30 hours. Usually closer to 10. This weekend I'm gonna be on for 72 hours!!!! Of course, it's 72 hours on call (my beer moonlighting weekend in a small rural ER). Again, I'm not saying enlisted folks are born stupid-asses. Not implying in the least. But Linz, do you think ther honor grad is looking at a scholarship or the recruiter? Now going to OCS is one thing, but to enlist? Hardly. There are lots of averagely smart enlisted folks, but the more educated, hence more intelligent kids got to OCS or college. I think you're probably right about the folks at the very tops of their classes in h.s. They're probably more likely to go to college. After you move beyond those top few spots, though, I think going to college vs military has more to do with values of the individual and his/her family, ability to pay for college and desire to get help with the cost by going to the military first, and maybe uncertainty about what the person wants to do with his/her life. I'm also not convinced that rank order in H.S. correlates adequately enough with intelligence to look at one as evidence for the other. It makes some sense that there would be a correlation, but how many times have you seen it happen that things just don't play out like you'd expect them to. This just may be one of those instances. I think that some environmental factors (exposures to brain-toxic substances...i.e. lead; some congenital anomalies due to in utero exposures; malnutrition; and maybe things like complete lack of nurturing as an infant and young child) impact intelligence. There is usually some sort of trigger, but some people just ALWAYS have symptoms. It's not always allergies, though. It could be cold air, or exercize, or little upper respiratory infections....lots of things. If you have allergies, you can see an allergist and be tested for allergies....or you can pay attention to when you have more allergy symptoms and go through a process of elimination. And yes, you can have a bad asthma attack in your sleep. Nighttime symptoms are common. Yes, you can die from asthma, quickly. Unfortunately, controlling asthma sometimes means seeing a doctor. Often allergies contribute heavily to a person's symptoms, though, and if you can control the allergies, asthma is much more manageable....maybe even without a doctor's input (except here, of course....lol). Anyway, I posted how education is a healthy component of intelligence, won't someone comment? Again, in the field of psychology, education and intelligence are 2 different entities. One would expect to see a persons IQ score change through the years if a person had no educational exposure at all through his/her childhood, but with typical educational exposure one would not expect a significant change in test scores. Any instrument that tests intelligence that showed a significant difference from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood (barring extraordinary events--i.e. trauma) would simply be considered an unreliable test and not used. The testing instruments that we DO use, like the Wechsler scales that test people from childhood through early adulthood, have both performance and verbal scales. The verbal scales are more affected by education than the performance scales, but even then, people's scores are very, very stable through the years. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. What? So if a person has great aptitude to learn and digs ditches they will be as intelligent as a person who has limited aptiitude and schools him/herself? I think you're transposing intelligence with potential. Nope. I'm not transposing anything. It's pretty well accepted among the testers of intelligence that intelligence is independent of education. It's stable throughout a person's lifetime except in extraordinary circumstances--i.e. traumatic brain injury and things like that. Damn....you're not sounding very open-minded here. So you say no correlation between education and intelligence? There probably is a correlation between education and intelligence. I'd bet there's also a correlation between recognizing ones duty to his country and intelligence too. Where would that leave us? No. I wouldn't object if he were prosecuted under laws that already existed.
