To revive this wonderful thread.... I'm guessing that maybe the flu shot didn't quite hit the mark this year. I've been sick for 4 days with the flu. Didn't get it as bad as my son, though. The schools have been just about empty. My friend Angela's 3rd grade class had 5 children there yesterday and today. The term "pastor" means shepherd. Acts 20:28 gives an admonishment to pastors: "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood." My congregation refers to themselves as "the Flock that Rocks!" So I doubt they see it as condescending. Do you really refer to your congregation as your "flock?" Is that a little condescending? I was thinking of how being referred to as a "congregation" and a "flock" differs. It's probably a different thread.... But it seems like calling people of the church your "flock" puts them in a childlike and dependent role. What's the purpose? Just to not be called a hijacker....lol....that's a different situation than a college, where people who are becoming (hopefully) more independent spend a few years growing and learning to that end. I agree that if behavior violates a school's code of conduct then the school should follow up per their guidelines. There are a few things happening that hits on these issues. It's hard to get an insurance company to pay for a lot of the more expensive medications. Some do, but most require a PA that documents a patient has been tried on adequate trials of less expensive medications before they'll foot the bill for the more expensive drug. Since I spend a lot of my time in the ER, here's what Medicaid's doing here to cut back on what they pay for routine care. Many, many, many people use the ER for things that aren't emergencies, and the cost for these visits is WAAAAY higher than if people just went to their own doctors during office hours. If a patient in Arkansas has Medicaid and goes to the ER for a non-emergent condition, Medicaid will pay for any evaluation done IF the physician does not give a prescription medication. This includes even more expensive studies if they are deemed necessary for evaluating the condition. However, if the condition is not emergent and the physician gives prescription medication, then they'll pay $38 for the visit, regardless of what work-up was involved. Now, in the short-term, this isn't gonna save money, but as people with Medicaid realize that they're not gonna be treated in the ER for something they shoulda seen their own docs for, then hopefully it will change how people use the ER. I think that this will probably set a new tone for other insurance companies as well. I think it could work. There could be other issues arise if ERs aren't used as frequently, but those are bridges that we'll have to cross when it happens. One of the things I loved about my undergraduate years was the tangents our classroom discussions often took. It wasn't all worthwhile, but it was mostly interesting. Who didn't choose their professors based on the discussions you'd have in class? Well, I did graduate from a really small (1,000 students) liberal arts college.... One of my favorites was the philosophical discussion (philosophy class, of course) about how there really was nothing....n o t h i n g.....better than sex. If members of your congregation (I assume you have one) were found to have been indulging in Satanic rituals in off-church property, would you say it's none of your church's business? Would you be upset and concerned only if they do it on your own altar? Yeah, but the Church has always been kinda domineering like that by nature. Makes me wonder who my college's Miss Hendrix pageant is really mocking? And could the ACLU make something of it.... It's basically a drag show, and some of the guys are HOT! Are they making fun of gay people? Or women? Or pageant people (whatever you call them)? Or just drag queens? Maybe it's just fun and silly. It sounds like it was pretty childish behavior on the students' part, but it's a college party. If it was off campus, then they can wear all the black face they want, and as long as they're of age, who cares if they sucked down some malt liquor. The only people they made look foolish were themselves. If people were that "deeply hurt," they probably need to grow up a little too. I think the point was that unless you overdose on heroin, it's less dangerous to you physically than most illicit drugs. The morbidity from heroin use comes from overdose and from problems caused by using needles that aren't sterile for the most part. Heroin is similar to morphine. A person's guilt is dependent only on his actions. Whether a person is found guilty is a judgment by the court, but is not necessarily a reflection of a person's actual guilt or innocence.... Just because Bush hasn't been found guilty doesn't mean he's not. I'm certainly not willing to overlook his actions and pretend all is peachy until some ruling. So what's the scale, then? 1 versus 10 versus 100s vs 1000s vs millions. The last has only been obtained by a few - Hitler, Stalin, Japan in the 30s, possibly the Turks and the Serbs. Bush is anywhere from the thousands to the hundreds of thousands, depending upon who you believe and how much blame is given the to Iraqi leadership. Clinton is in the hundreds to thousands for his bombings, and 1-10 for alledged acts of sexual misconduct. (Ask any dad if his daughter is one too many or not) Trying to boil it down to a number of casualties ignores a HUGE part of the current problem. The method by which he brought us into this conflict (lying) and the likely motivation for him to do this (personal gain) resulting in the thousands to hundreds of thousands of casualties definitely put Bush beyond that magic marker on the scale. Without a doubt in the world. There is no number of casualties, alone, that makes a leader (again, I use that term loosely in Bush's case) culpable.
