I think that most states have Medicaid. I work for one of the AHECs in our state, and we provide health care for some of the very poorest people in this country....folks in the Arkansas Delta. Some of them have Medicaid. Some have nothing. You don't usually need a payment source to get health care at a teaching institution. It's amazing, though, that even though health care is available, people don't take advantage of what's available until they're very ill, and then it's common for people to only do what's necessary to get over the current exacerbation of whatever it is....and nothing to keep the next bout at bay. I think, for instance, it's likely that because there are so many uneducated, unskilled, unemployed people in this part of the country that the people who work for a modest living (and also vote) don't want the money they need to feed their children to go to those who don't work. People die from acetaminophen toxicity, but they don't die quickly. It's slow and uncomfortable. I wonder what that actually reflects. I wonder how they'd compare if the states were ranked by poverty levels. Come live in Gainesville for about two minutes and you will find out real quick who fancies the gators. The attorneys are walking around here acting like they won the freaking Florida game...ugh Our receptionist, however, is confused, she was all decked out in Gator attire on Friday and I walk in this morning and she has on the red and gray. She graduated from Ohio State, so thankfully I am not in the Swamp alone!! Yeah....it was confused around here like that during the Florida-Arkansas game. I would bet the farm that if this was your child you would scream bloody murder. No doubt, the kid made a mistake and he should had paid for it in court. How many here can say that they never screwed up? I feel sorry for the cop as I am positive that he believed that he did everything right. An unfortunate chain of events. If he were my child I'd be sad, and I wish the officer had at least kept an eye on him....(noticed he was missing and then saw him in the water???)....but I wouldn't blame the police officer for my child's death. And I sure as hell wouldn't sue anyone for my child's stupidity. The cop really SHOULD have paid better attention to the kid though. And don't the parents share some responsibility for not having a minor in their charge, home and sober at 3am? Yes. They did have a responsibility that they obviously did not meet. ofc. Errors and Mistakes on the part of 'the State' are "Part of the risks of the job" and are excused, but if the populace were to make the same kind of mistake the tolerance for 'error' becomes extremely low... And I don't think the same mistake on the part of "the State" would be so easily excused if this had occurred in a more affluent neighborhood and the grandmother they killed had been someone more highly regarded by society. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. It is so very, very sad. But on a brighter note, at the end of the game there were two men waiting in the ER for me to I&D their abscesses. Got to get rid of a little frustration there.... I have a 2002 Dyna Wide Glide. Fuel injection would be nice. I don't have that. I LOVE my bike. I've had to pick it up once, and was able to do it just fine with a little back put into it...lol. I agree with that. I'm having a hard time understanding how this happened, though. This sweet little 92 year old woman just happens to be sitting there with her pistol in her lap as the police kick the wrong door in? I'm guessing that the neighborhood's bad enough that she feels like she has to keep a loaded gun on her person at all times, even in her own house? She was able to shoot several times, but didn't realize she was shooting at the police? Something just doesn't seem right in this picture. The police officers did what they had to do once she was shooting at them. It's a very unfortunate situation, and should never have happened. And if it goes b4 a judge, who does the judge believe? It's NOT word/word. Last time I testified in court, the issue being argued was my word against an Arkansas state trooper's word. The incident in question wasn't recorded, and the judge believed me....or at least he ruled in our favor. This particular trooper was lying. But I think it's a small minority of police officers who are "inherently liars." I think most are honest people. linz Females fare better in court than males do, but here cops are king to lower court judges. I think that it had nothing at all to do with my being female. For you to suggest that says more about your bias than the judge's, imho. While I believe that most police officers are honest, my belief that judges aren't so easily swayed by gender bias is even stronger. She (the judge) MIGHT have given some credence to my level of education and my reputation as a physician, but I'd bet that my gender was irrelevant. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged.
