This is the last post in the thread "Dead Friends List" by apoil What you are talking about now has nothing to do with skydiving. It has to do with dealing with loss. Many people stop getting close to other people after getting their heart broken, or losing a loved one to disease. There's the deeper question of what it really means to be alive which ties to why we jump in the first place. The route you are contemplating might reduce the chance of pain in the future, but it also cuts off something. And that something is part of what makes life worth living. As to the pain you might put others through if you die, here's two things: 1) Don't fucking die skydiving. Seriously. Stay sharp and do everything you can to not let it happen. Learn from every incident and don't repeat the mistakes of others. 2) While it will be painful, how do you want to be remembered? As that person that was so passionate about life that she lived it to the extreme and took risks or as that person who was always safe and nothing ever really happened to her. Most families of skydivers have already come to terms with the possibility. If not, they will. They are your family - they share some of your genetic traits - they WILL understand. If you are talking about your extended skydiving family, they know that the risk of pain and loss are part of the full spectrum of experiences in life. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Really, though....just because a police officer, or some police officers, or even the police believe that the increase in murders is due to the easy availability of "illegal" guns doesn't make it so. I didn't get a bonus, but I gave $100 extra to Jay's babysitter (a 15 y/o kid....a week's pay), and the sweet boy used it to buy me and Jay Christmas presents. What a sweetie. I think I'll give him a raise. I gave my hairdresser a check written out to the massage therapist next door for an hour-long massage. But everybody else is SOL! Nice qualifier. Yeah. My mom taught me as a child to be considerate of other people. As I've grown up I've learned to have empathy for people all the way over there in Iraq....and to consider how our actions as a nation affect their lives. Funny. I find it hard to consider the murder of 3000 innocent civilians, during peacetime, all killed within a two hour period, in a highly visible and horrific manner is insignificant by any comparison. BTW What deathtoll are you using? The US military? The Iraq Death Toll website? Or that ridiculously study from the Lancet, that hardly anybody considers legitimate? We've obviously made tremendous advances in medicine. But now we're faced with, for the first time, the notion that our children's life expectancy will be shorter than ours. This is due to obesity. I'm sure that's a different kind of "imbalance in the person" than you're talking about. But it's amazing that we can know as much and have as much medical ability that we do and still not be able to overcome a very basic problem.
