  1. Sorry for the digression... I'm guessing that the S&TA is like our DZSO (DZ Saftey Officer) From our OpRegs: In addition to the powers granted by his organisation to discipline its members, a DZSO may suspend from any or all parachuting activities any parachutist contravening these regulations or performing parachuting activities in a manner dangerous to themselves or others for the period of the time necessary for his report of the infringement to reach the ASO. Isn't it pointless to have S&TAs if they can't do anything? I found the S&TA manual on the USPA website. It seems that all they can do is report the jumper to the regional director. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

  19. It also depends on how many people want it, and how easy it is to make. Like when aluminium was first discovered. It was very hard to extract in its metallic form. Napolean even gave an aluminium broach to his wife. Now that we have electricity, Al is as cheap as chips. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

  23. I think you suprise all of us on a regular basis Michele. I did my first 7 (SL) jumps as part of a cadet course to get my para wings. After 3 months, I went back to do more, and haven't stopped since. We've probably had at least one refusal per cse that we have run (~4 cses). Generally, they get a go-around to see if they can get out the 2nd time. If not, they can shuffle around (3 students and a dispatcher in a C182) and get the next one out. They are then given another chance after the last student has gone. If not, they come down. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  24. But then wouldn't they be better qualified? I don't know the specific things (for want of a better word) that each (Australian) licence allows the jumper to do other than landing in smaller areas. When I first saw the requirements for the PRO rating, I was suprised at how low the requirements were (compared to ours). Landing area is one. The minimum landing area aloowable for a PRO jump is 5000 sqft. (~22 m square) The minimum landing area for an A licence is 500 sqm (~22 m square). But the accuracy requirement for a PRO is equivelent to half a B licence. That said, things like flag and smoke rigging are good. I don't know if they're included in the A examination, as the requirements aren't specifically outlined. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  25. I think that the general consensus is to set the alarms for 500' below the altitude that you would normally do things. For me, I break off at 4k and dump at 3. My hard deck is 2k. My dytter is set at 3.5, 2.5 and 1.5. That way you don't start relying on your audible, it just acts as a wake-up call. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
