  1. Doesn't anyone use SI? A standard atmosphere is 101.3 kPa. Of course YMMV. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  2. Personally, I don't like the shiny finish to parapak. As to it's durability, I have no idea how it compares to cordura. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  3. No worries. mmmm the power of Google.... -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  4. It's the number of pixels actually used to create the picture, as opposed to the number of pixels on the CCD. Check out http://www.dpreview.com/learn/Glossary/Camera_System/Effective_Pixels_01.htm -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

Rus was down at Busselton last weekend. He got one new guy into a wingsuit and did a few more with another BM. Ended the weekend with a 3-way. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  6. I've dealt with Total Control. I've bought a second-hand rig off them, plus some other bits and pieces They're pretty good. Easy to talk to, and Richie will go out of his way to help you. One thing that you have to watch out for if you buy gear from the US is the tax that gets put on it when it comes here. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  7. Cool. I like his attitude.... -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  8. Thanks for that. You just answered my next question re bags and sliders on a comp Tri. Cheers. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  9. What makes CReW canopies open hard at terminal? I'll make a specific reference to the Triathalon here. They make a RW, hybrid and CReW canopies. The first two, you can open at terminal, the last you can't. What is the difference between them all? Just wondering... -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  10. I think you should take the same advice we give to AFF1 students: relax. I tried out to go with the WA Police Pipe Band when they went to Edinburgh last year. I knew I wasn't going to get in (I wasn't good enough) I just went along for the experience. It was quite nerve wracking to have the drum sergeant just sitting there listening to you play your music. Just pretend that her isn't there; that's what I did. Pretend that you're playing to an empty (or full) hall, anything to get away from the one-on-one pressure. Also, how good is your sight reading? I was given a 4 part hornpipe and jig and 30 minutes to go through it before I had to play them for him. The hornpipe was marginal, and the jig was hopeless.... I can play the jig now. Haven't touched the hornpipe since though... I take it this is DCI? Know your terminology. Know your tunes. Know how to sight read, how to improvise. Most importantly, relax. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  11. and, may I ask, how big was their sample? 1-2000? How many people in the US? 300,000,000. mmmmm How representative is that? Paraphrasing Kallend here "I'd fail you for that." -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  12. You know your weight to 8 significant figures? Even more impressive. You'd get a zero in my class for writing down an answer like that. That's alright. I'd give me a zero for that too. You'll also note that I didn't include errors in my results either. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  13. We're doing what all physicists love to do. We're ignoring air resistance. There is no terminal velocity. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  14. We're using _real_ units here, metres and seconds and things.... g=9.81 ms^-2 . Her average velocity is equal to the integral of v with repect to t from 0 to t, divided by t. v=-at=-9.8*t /t v(ave)= | v dt /0 ------------ t /t = | -at dt /0 ------------ t t = [-0.5*9.8*t^2] ----------------0 t But because we started from zero velocity, then v(ave) is given by v(ave)=v/2 In this case, t=2.1, 2.01, 2.001 ... Her average velocities are: t=2.1 v(ave)= -10.290 ms^-1 t=2.01 v(ave)= -9.849 ms^-1 t=2.001 v(ave)= -9.805 ms^-1 t=2.0001 v(ave)=-9.800 ms^-1 From this we can say that her average velocity is tending to -9.8 ms^-1. -ve, because she's going down. It's an arbitrary choice of reference frame, but I'll stick with it. From the above equation, v(ave)=v/2. So, v=-19.6 ms^-1 Speed at t=2 is 19.6 ms^-1. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  15. That's the idea. The Herc boogie is focussed on 8+ ways. You need a bit of experience to do that consistancly flying flat, and a lot more to do it on your head. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  16. I'm 5.9954365 × 10-17 parsecs tall. I also weigh 3.2681053 × 10-29 solar masses -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

  21. I did tame jumps. (NON INSTRUCTOR DISCLAIMER) You do practice throws on your PC, and touch all your emergency handles in freefall. Once you open, clear your airspace, and do practice touches on you handles. I also pulled high ~5k. Thats the basics. You'll be briefed properly by your CI/DZSO -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  22. Just make sure you get your A licence and do your conversions before you go to Florida. That way, you'll be up to speed on the sports gear. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
  23. I flew to Perth to Brisbane via Sydney (with an interational flt from SYD-> BNE) that other week. Carried my rig on with me. I rocked up a couple of hours early just in case, and had my cypres card and some letters from CASA, but it just went straight through security. No-one even blinked. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
