I was in the States recently, and it took me 3 hours and two missed flights to get through security at LAX. That said, we did have to go through the ultrahigh security line, with like 60 people waiting and one person scanning. I would have thought that one of the busiest airports in the world would have their shit together. They don't (didn't...) Just be wary. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

I would make it at least 5 consec. nom. jumps within 10 m. If you scale the nominated jumps between the C and F licence, then D (your C) would be 10 within 15 m and E (your D) would be 15 within 10 m. . and to answer your question, yes it is in line with what I'm thinking. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

by consecutive, I don't mean one after the other, but the declared jumps need to be consecutive. ie. jump jump declare jump jump declare declare jump jump jump declare. If you fulfill the requirements on the declared jumps, then those are consecutive nominated jumps. . The PRO rating is for demos right? Our display licences are (amongst other things): Display D: Just need your B licence. Display C: D licence and 20 consecutively nominated landings within 20 m. Display B: E licence and 20 consecutively nominated landings within 5 m. Display A: F licence and 20 consecutively nominated landings within 1 m. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

I'm not going to add anything on the canopy control side, just a suggestion for your accuracy. How about introducing pre-declared landings. The APF has the following setup: B (50 jumps): 7 consecutive nominated jumps within 25 m. C (100 jumps): 20 landings within 10 m and 5 consecutive nominated jumps within 20 m. D (200): 20 landings within 5 m. E (500): 20 landings within 1 m. F (1000): 20 landings within 1 m and 20 consecutive nominated jumps within 5 m. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

0:4:1 Carton for first jump at Hillman Farm. 1 h'n'p from 2.5 (cloud base) 2 jumps in the Mumbles accuracy meet. Score is the total time taken for the team (4 jumpers) from first one to land to the last one to get in the hoop at the side of the target. 1st round was about 50 sec because I misjudged my downwind leg, and went too far. the 2nd round was 19 s. Not too shabby. 1 Caravan load from 12k. Exit a 4way chunk and tried to spin it up. Ended up tracking down the runway away from the DZ and landed a little way out. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

Exponent and exponentially - totally understand. -- y=x^2, y=2^x. If x=2, then the two equations return the same value. They also return the same value at x=4. FYI I've attached graphs of the functions. the red one is x^2. -- Acceleration. I'm not doing anything else here. Please read previous posts -- Centrifugal force. Not going there, it's going to degenerate into an acceleration type arguement. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

I'm not sure where my arms are during my flare. If pressed, I'd say to my side, or slightly in front. I've recently changed my flare style in response to some canopy tutoring. During the actual ride down the landing my arms go all over the place, but I'm still experimenting, so... -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

Again, bad schooling/learning on my part. We were taught that in velocity^2, that the 2 was called an exponent. Hence I derived the increases exponentially. By the way, what is the 2 in this case called? The 2 is the exponent. When you have a variable raised to a power, it is a polynomial. The power is constant, be it 2, -3 or pi. An exponential has a constant raised to a variable. Hence 3^x or something like that. If you compare y=x^2 to y=2^x, then the 2nd equn is going to shoot off to infinity a lot faster. . Acceleration is acceleration is acceleration. The direction of which is given by the sign of the number out the front. Deccelerate is a term that has come into common usage, used to denote 'slowing down'. It doesn't really do any harm to use it, but to be technically correct, you should use accelerate. It's a bit like centrifugal force. Engineers like it. It makes their calculations easier. Physicists hate it, centrifugal force doesn't exist, it's just inertia. I think at this point we should agree to disagree on the pedantic nature of this discussion. Everyone is talking about the same thing, and what they are saying is correct. No-one is saying anything wrong here, it's just a matter of terminology and the level of understanding that you need to go into. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

How many people do you put in 182s? Every DZ I've been to (3) puts in 5, but I've seen references to (american) DZs that only put in 4 jumpers... -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

Depends on how busy they are, and what sort of instructions they get from any ATC that is around. . I like h'n'p's. But I started on SL, so its my bread and butter. If I'm at the DZ when they've got a SL course going, they'll send me up on the first load as the 'drifter'. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

E=mc^2 is the energy equivelance equation. It has nothing at all to do with this discussion. What you're interested in, and have discussed above are these: Momentum = mass * velocity Energy = 0.5 * mass * velocity^2 The energy doesn't change exponentially as velocity increases; it's only a quadratic increase. That's much slower. . At deployment, the tandem _does_ accelerate away from the camera. In freefall, they are falling at a constant velocity, the TM then deploys the canopy _slowing the tandem down_ (the TM has decelerated (or more properly -vely accelerated)) relative to the camera. Relative to the tandem, the camera accelerates away from them. ahhh the fun of relative motion.... Negative aceleration is the same as deceleration. There is no difference what so ever. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

I've only seen one bunch of people in freefall while I was in freefall, and that was because I exited and then turned and watched them leave the plane, and watched them all the way down. For the rest of it, you have to rely on exit seperation and tracking. I haven't been involved in any close calls, so I can't comment on that from experience. I do think that there was a double fatality in Nagambie at Easter that was due to impropper exit procedures. I'll have to check on the conclusions from that investigation. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

Warning: 100 jump wonder posting. Conditions don't have to be bad for you to be moving backwards under canopy into wind. I did that numerous times when I was a student; a 270 loaded at ~0.6-0.7 helped a bit. The first time I flared, and got dumped on my arse. I asked what I should do in the future, and I was told to not flare, and to PLF. The explanation given to me was that flaring reduces the airspeed of the canopy. If you're already going backwards, flaring (reducing airspeed) will make you go backwards faster, therefore, don't flare. . Last weekend, I was jump in highish winds (15-20 kn) and I was just penetrating, consequently my flare stroke wasn't as long as a no-wind day, which is consistent with what has been said. . added: Basically, as far as I see it, the reason for changing your flare is due to your groundspeed. Your canopy only cares about airspeed, but you would like to have as close to zero (normally) _groundspeed_ before landing. So, as the wind increases, the amount of flare required decreases. This is probably a non-linear relationship, I haven't got enough experience to comment on that. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
