So the toggles aren't really a problem. Just a case of new risers and toggles. I'm not too concerned about that. I was more looking at the riser cover velcro. But that said, it probably depends on how I'm going to use it. Headdown vs flatfly. Which at this stage is probably going to be more flatfly. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

I got slammed on my openening today
masher replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
How much does it need to slide down before you start getting slammed? -- Arching is overrated - Marlies -
Okeday. I think we've established that reserve repacks/closing shouldn't/isn't a problem. A follow up question. What about the velcro on the rig? The riser covers are held shut by velcro down the side of the reserve pack tray, and the covers up by the 3rings are held shut by velcro too. The toggles are velcro too... Is this a problem? or is it a matter of maintainance? -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

whoops. My bad. I did mean close, not pack. Considering I went off at a bunch of chemists on one of their assignments about proper terminology, I should follow my lead! -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

The harnesses fit very well. re the Jav, he did just mention it to me, we haven't entered any serious discussions... -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

I'm in the market for my first rig. One rig that I'm currently looking at is a Racer Elite with a Sabre 150, PD 143 reserve with Cypres. The container, reserve and main are all 97 vintage, and the system has "less than 100 jumps". It looks like, as the lines on the main are still white, and the fabric is still slippery. The riser covers are secured by velcro. The cypress is a 1/02 vintage. It's currently setup as a pullout. I did a few jumps on it this weekend (loaded at 1.1), and it was very nice. A couple of my instructors seemed to have a little problem with due to the fact that it is a Racer, but I didn't have the time to delve deeper into that, the the velcro riser covers, velcro toggles and potential resale value seemed to play a part in that. and probably reserve repacks too... The asking price is AU$4500 (~US$2900). That includes two altis as well. Does that price seem reasonable? I did a quick calc (only using knowledge gained from here) and came up with about the same price. . There's also the potential of purchasing a ~95 Javelin with a Sabre 135 (~400 jumps) with cypres off one of my instructors. He said he'd sell it to me for $4k (~US$2.6k). I don't know what the reserve is, but it hasn't had any jumps. I'm pretty sure the cypres is coming up for it's 8yr service. . What do you people think? I haven't had a chance to jump the Jav yet, but I'll ask this weekend. Just thought I'd ask. All advice and opinons will be taken with a large grain of salt. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

Why do riggers seem to dislike Racers? The reason I ask is that I'm thinking of buying one (buts thats another thread...) I haven't seen one being repacked, but I've been told how fiddly they are... Just wondering... Matthew -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

I had my first ZP pack last weekend. The canopy had about 60 jumps on it. I ended up using clamps to hold the bottom (down at the slider) together and a pullup cord tied around the top of the canopy to stop it sliding out. It only took me about an hour in total to get it packed. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

The pointers that have been given so far are pretty good, so I won't add to them. However... This is bollocks. You a doing a performance based assesment. You should know how you need to perform in order to pass. I was involved in marking "Instructional Technique" at a cadet promotional course, and we had to make sure that all the cadets knew what they were being marked on. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

0:3:0 Tried out a rig I'm thinking about buying (97 Racer, Sabre 150 100jumps) H'n'P from 5k and had a bit of a play. 'twas a very nice canopy. Landed in quite nicely about 10m from target centre. Did a 7 point 2 way, and I didn't need weights! But I do need to work on staying close to the formation, I move a little bit too much horizontally. Solo from height. Spun myself right up with some leg turns. Fun. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

We had a student do this very thing the other week. Direct bad deployment. Ended up with his leg caught in the lines, and him hanging upside down. He managed to clear himself, and not break anything... -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

From the APF OpRegs: 5.7. DISPLAY DESCENTS 5.7.16. A student may be carried as a tandem passenger into a display provided that: (a) The Tandem-Master holds at least a Display "B" Licence, and has documented evidence of at least 50 descents as Tandem-Master; (b) The descent is authorised by a Chief Instructor; -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

Yes you have to have you CPL to be paid, but also the company for whom you are working need to have an approved maintainance schedule and a whole lot of other stuff to be able to pay you to fly. I can't comment on your last statement, but of the 5 or 6 pilots that fly at my DZ, only one has his CPL, and he's only flown about 3 times for us (he's new). -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

You're not allowed to pay jump pilots or you're not allowed to pay private pilots? If you're not allowed to pay private pilots how do you manage to keep them flying as jump pilots? You're not allowed to pay private pilots. You keep them flying by giving them free hours. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

Also, re the medical. Pilots carry passengers, and they're responsible for them. Skydivers don't, except for TMs, and in Oz, they need a pilots medical to keep their rating. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

Open your DZ in Oz. Pilots only need their private licence, and you're not allowed to pay them (by law) -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

I was actually refering to the audible mount. I know that Gaths aren't the best for actual head protection... -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

A couple of months ago, Mr Gath and his sons came to our DZ to try out a new version of the Gath helmet - the Skyhat. They've added a side mount to fit a pro dytter/track. They look quite good, and to my untrained eye, they seem to be quite solid. I don't know how new/old this news is, but I thought I might let you know about it. . I sent an email to them the other day, asking if it's available yet, and they sent me the attached info. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies Pro Dytter Base Plate & Cover 4.doc

The key phrase you're missing is "Neglecting air resistance" If you factor air resistance in, then you get varying fall rates. I've done fluid physics at uni, and the calculations are _much_ easier when you neglect air resistance, but the answers don't bear much relation to real world things. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

Do you have to sell your house if you move? Why can't you rent it out? . For me, I'd want a done deal before I'd move, and for a decent amount of time. Could you talk them into a relocation allowance? How much do they need you? -- Arching is overrated - Marlies

prescription googles for very high scripts
masher replied to Squeak's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Thats a good website. There seems to be a lot of choice in goggles. I may have to talk to Stacey about that, see what he thinks. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies -
How do you go with the specifics of your log? APF rules require: type of parachute descent date location of the DZ, exit height free fall time in seconds distance landed from the target centre type and registration of the aircraft. -- Arching is overrated - Marlies
