So, new to Speaker's Corner? ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

because putting people with a lot of political experience has been a disaster? again, and again, and again..... just not that guy. Edit: In other topics - during the NCAA bracket breakdown yesterday, at one point, Charles Barkeley responded to a 'vote' comment with a digression about the presidential race with something like "Have you seen the candidates we have?" or "what about all the clowns in the race?" or something like that.... I was primed for massive sportsshow entertainment and wicked fan retaliation over the next few days....... sadly, the other hosts stepped away and quietly pretended the comment didn't happen... I wonder how loud the buzzing in Sir Charles' earpiece was...... ... It opens up a question - this is one end of the spectrum where someone has released the fanatics to physical violence. So take this count, and the true number is twice that...... ... Because one side is actively condoning, encouraging and inciting violence. Amazes me how some people don't see a difference in that. Trump is not offering any policies either. It is all motherhood statements, nothing with any "meat" tied to it. Trump has his supporters so fired up that putting muslims and Mexicans in a camp with a monthly "shower" would be applauded and cheered if suggested. That is scary and nowhere near: the other side is just the same. I'm ok that it's the same technique, but taken to the dangerous extreme in this case. It's like environmentalist inciting personal attacks, spiking trees, etc. It's like shootings at abortion clinics. It's like BLM blocking ambulances from getting to the emergency room. it's bringing out the fanatics from hiding - scary that there are a lot more than we thought. edit: looks like Joe posted something similar - we're on the same page - even the "it's a lot more people than we'd have guessed" fear ... Politics 101 those darn immigrants stealing our jobs those baby killers those thieves and lazy freeloaders those gun grabbers those rich fatcats those polluters those racists and sexists those rabid gun freaks I can keep going all day. amazes me how you guys continue to pitch these things as a one side only does it theme that said - I'm pretty sad at the responses the public is having over Trump - and disappointed that he won't (is incapable of) use that attention in a more productive way as this could have been an opportunity, not a piece of political leverage - terrified of some of his supporters, actually terrified at the more radical types that oppose him also - he just seems to attract a lot of 'do whatever it takes' mentalities - I thought we were polarized before - this is nuts ... It wasn't so much that he was shitty or not, it was more that he thought being the chief executive meant he'd have the power to just make things happen like a CEO. Reality hit when he found out he needed the legislature to agree for anything big to happen. At which point, being 'refreshing' by speaking his mind and not faking sympathy with whiners and activists was about the extent of his influence. I suspect Trump is in the same boat - it's a presidency with balance of powers in play - not a company or a kingship. I'm kind of counting on a hostile legislature no matter who eventually gets into the office. I feel pretty good about the chances of this too. ... all people have convictions and strong convictions - I don't care about that. It's when those convictions are so strong that they try to force them on others is when I think the line is crossed....that's pretty much my definition of the fanatic so - if you mean "fanatical" convictions - absolutely. fanaticism falls into a lot more areas than just religion, as well - and not just stuck on one side of an arbitrary political fence ... When this is said in such a general fashion like this it really pisses me off. If you'd say - "I object to someone that would want to change the country based on a fanatical viewpoint, or a hard religious bias" I be just fine. But just any "muslim" is a crock - we have lots of religions in this country and most all are represented by people that are able to keep their fundamental religion out of their exercise of power. I can't stand how posters here just go on personal attack as their first option - but this particular thread......... ... And we love our little brother to the north. you know the one - he's fresh into his sophomore year in college and has had alot of indoctrination fed to him and he's into it because it sounds so neat - and no real world experience into how things really work. You humor him, encourage him, and watch him slowly grow up into the cool person he'll be. You protect him and bail him out on occasion - and ignore it when he's mean or dismissive to you because that's what big brothers do for family. But despite any differences, don't fuck with either one - because when they stand together they are freaking formidable ... sounds a lot like how the left attacks the right to bear arms funny how politicians and fanatics on all sides don't respect the intent and spirit of the law In both cases - they think they are saving lives and want to remove rights for their so-called 'noble cause' nothing is more dangerous to the rule of law than true believers with Machiavellian bias ... any politician - both sides My gosh, I hope you guys see the applicability of your statements to pretty much any poster here that is strongly partisan..... (mean spirited ridicule is pretty much the ONLY response a handful of people here even have - they don't even try discussion at all. As for the political front runners, just listen to the speeches, they are spoon feeding that crap to their followers in every single speech - it's the lion's share of the content) ... Hillary/Bernie has found a way to tap into that anger, in part by portraying simple solutions (i.e. "free education, free healthcare, taxes that 'even the field', all cops are bad, take away guns ") and then telling people other politicians just don't want to do that. Hillary/Bernie regularly builds up that anger and misery within his rallies; he even expresses support for violence that happens within those rallies, and laments that his followers can no longer use violence against people who disagree with with their noble causes . It's funny, because that whole paragraph has always been the playbook for the Dems. I've noticed in the last couple decades, though, that it's the playbook for both sides, just that Dems are so successful at it. My point is this is regularly used by both parties - demonize the other guys (or any group that is disfavored) or generate hate or envy somehow - emotionally spin up your followers - cash in politically. The obtuseness of Trump's mean spirited speech is to many of us demonstrates pretty much just the blatant similarity to the obtuseness of the Dems for so long (how different is his blanket statements any better or worse that the blanket statement that anyone that is against Hillary is just sexism - oversimplifies, mean spirited, demeans the other). I wonder if a ton of the backlash could just be used to show each other how hateful simplification and strawmen and vicious caricatures of each other really does tear the nation apart. ... But then you have to consider the severity of the lies as well. Lying about your dick size is different than lying about being shot at during a visit to a country as First Lady. that's an exaggeration, but I guess if Hillary and Donald just want to lie - this is kind of a 'dick measuring' lie to her credit.... We could talk about lies that are more serious - covering up the reason for a horrific execution of an entire ambassadorial staff just for political expediency ... I'm with Bolas in the philosophy of it. In practice - it really is a question of whether we've reached that point enough to let it work - isolated anecdotes are crappy examples pro or con to it though. philosophy is one thing. or....GASP.....reducing our aid and support? (Some countries, probably yes, but as I said, they are just looking for excuses. Are you Americans crazy enough to put Donald Trump in office?
rehmwa replied to 434's topic in Speakers Corner
Yes - I only looked at one leg. There are other considerations (as I PAINFULLY tried to make clear if you read it) I usually structure risk analysis like you suggest - but three criteria: likelihood, detectability, consequences (in this case, detection being a bit obtuse) I have no issue with how you looked at it and kind of agree (though not sure anymore if "business as usual" is more of a 'short term only' safety position. vs huge shakeup maybe being needed) but not really the aspect I was wondering about. ... meh.... we are already hated by those that will hate us (not just Arabs), this would be just another contrived excuse to reinforce that - it's pretty clear they don't care why, or if it's justified or not, or if it even makes any sense ditto - those that like us also won't matter I find the discussion to be a non-starter, pro or con ... Maybe the question isn't - which of the players are we most scared of as president Maybe it's more like - which ones are we scared of they get a couple years of a 'same team' in both houses? (brought up elsewhere here - it was a really good point by either Quade or Jakee, I don't recall which) Bernie? - Maybe even a Dem congress will still reel him in. Hard to tell. Hillary? - a Dem congress will back her up, too tempting to push the agenda harder Donald? - regardless of Congress party balance - both parties will have to hold him back - Dems disagree with him, Reps don't dare let him do anything because they won't tolerate an outsider (and they find him despicable also) Cruz? - His own people don't even like him. Likely he'll get held back too. But maybe not as he's establishment and sticking it to the Dems will be too tempting. too tempting to push the agenda harder Rubio? - kinda like Hillary, a Rep congress would back him up Bernie or Trump in an aspect that considers the balance of powers might not be so horrible (only in this aspect, other aspects have their own horribleness) ...
