clearly they mean 'take them out to dinner' and establish a rapport with them so they see we all are pretty much the same what else could it mean? going after someone's family (as an example, as leverage, as hostage) might make a nice feeling short term meme that Facebook fans could exploit for likes from those that agree and disagree alike, but it's really counterproductive and will create more terrorists that now are angry on a personal level in addition to the already fanatically religious level. short term gratification that actually results in long term serious issues seems to be the standard ploy of politicians everywhere - Makes one wonder about the attention span of today's voters.....next thing you know, some politician will try to offer a ton of free stuff that the economy can't handle just to get into office, or offer to build a wall, or blame an inanimate object as a dumbed down substitute for cultural/family degradation....or something else silly ... Sure, abandon the crowd for a long time and then poke in here during a contentious election........just for the entertainment You'll see little has changed - everyone is being assholes to each other (except for Wendy, she's smarter and nicer than everyone, period, no exceptions....nuff said ), no minds have changed. mockery and shenanigans galore for those not light of spine. It may or may not be meaningful, problem for me is when the quoting starts, my ears just shut off For me it's threefold: 1 - I'm agnostic, so quoting scripture does about as much for me as when some douche says "nuff said" or some other platitude. Only if the actual words of the scripture apply in a clever way would it matter - but I'm guilty of just ignoring it because it is just quoting something - see 2 below 2 - resorting to quoting something also weakens another's argument with me. quoting music lyrics (arrggh), scriptures, etc etc etc - indicates (to me) that the person doesn't understand their positions strongly enough to use their own words and they are a follower, rather than a thinker. YMMV (I know there is disagreement here for some - no issue, this is how I see it) 3 - Typically when someone is quoting scripture, it only reinforces their argument with people that already agree with them. So I end up just assuming that they aren't interested in debate and discussion, rather they are just interested in self-reinforcement. Of course, this is likely true of most discussion gambits, not just scripture, lots of just regurgitating what one thinks their friends will nod seriously at..... I might be unfair in these assessments, but it's the way I take it. ... WOW! I am speechless. no, you shouldn't be that post (agree or not) was a good discussion to have and it has some basis that many cultural changes that we've forced upon ourselves is, in itself, much of the root cause. (the bad that comes with the good) but you lose 90% of the readers when you say we need a disaster, and then you lose 99% when you quote scripture.... no one will talk about the useful content, you'll just get bashed on the closing statements and the message is wasted know your audience ... yeah, I know - else you would have just kept up the bumper sticker comments later instead trying to add content..... (less your comment, more than it's just the standard content on these forums, even the smart players - frankly, especially the smarter people. it's like no one even cares to try anymore or they are just so smug they don't care to. Maybe the regular crowd should just meet at a boogie and then stand in a circle and kick each other in the balls for an evening......then drinks, and jumps. It would be a boogie after all) ... Yes, that is the only reason. No one actually doesn't like it because of the economic or social issues that are indicated. The only reason to disagree with it is due to nefarious and horrible character flaws of lowbrow neanderthals from the bottom 25% IQ of the nation. Pointless strawmen like that are reason why people can't have reasoned discussions. Both sides do it. The thing that's annoying is they aren't played at the end of a discussion out of frustration as just an impotent slam on the opponents. The impotent slams are played immediately without even trying to understand both sides. It's lazy and political. It happens on every single issue now. I think people aren't even fanatical anymore, they are just lazy and bumper sticker opinions are just easier to vomit out. (This is a general comment, gowlerk, sorry that your post is the one to set it off, but it's a perfect example. At least in this thread you are trying to flesh it out a bit.) However, it does make Speaker's Corner very predictable. ... He provided a very generalized set of comments and observations - Not a lot of details to disagree with other than the overall message. ("I don't agree with some of it" usually comes across to me as - "I'm not sure how I want to spin it". Or in engineering meetings "Sounds good, but I want to appear thoughtful so I'll pick some number that's not a 1 or a 10". In engineering, it's a peeve of mine when management does that - but usually because the delivery comes across as "I'd do it better" instead of "good job, can I provide some thoughts on how to make it even better") In any case, I think the other stuff is also very visible and has been for a long time. The signals have been flashing for decades. Trump and his followers are just turning the volume knob to '11' - and in a VERY objectionable way really IMO. ... Merrick Garland to be nominated by Obama for Scalia's SCOTUS seat
rehmwa replied to nolhtairt's topic in Speakers Corner
of course not, just like he did his job and submitted a decent and balanced budget each of the last 8 years these guys decide what they choose to do and what they don't choose to do. and it has nothing to do with running the government and getting things done for the sake of the people. as soon as we acknowledge that applies to both sides and stop cherry picking each individual scenario to choose to debate on....until then, this forum is no better than congress (I'm kidding, it's more entertaining, but no less petty) no surprise that the the visible position of president is the first to show it's totally broken and getting worse "They did it first" "They do it worse" are really lame arguments - of course they did, THAT's WHAT THEY DO. At some point, someone has to choose to not do that crap any more. Of course Obama's pick is political, or course the Senate is being political. that's who they are. ... Merrick Garland to be nominated by Obama for Scalia's SCOTUS seat
rehmwa replied to nolhtairt's topic in Speakers Corner
ooooh - that would take the crapulence to the next level even. The reps would have to counter with agreeing to hold the hearings, starting them in November, but no decisions until after the election to see who the next president would be. Of course, in a two party system we NEVER get both parties being bigger and bigger pricks over time. I'm sure they learn from each other and it gets better and more efficient over time... ... Merrick Garland to be nominated by Obama for Scalia's SCOTUS seat
rehmwa replied to nolhtairt's topic in Speakers Corner
no - have the hearing, vote NO (do not CONSENT) in a clear and uncompromising way, then ADVISING the president on what would be a better selection criteria is what should be done This is not a good choice for a judge - he tends to use his position to be a biased social warrior (example - NOT being a 2nd supporter is not per the law and intent - but it's deeper than just that) and supporter of the system instead of objectively looking at intent. It should be easy to vote no. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants -
you say it nicely, only when emotions overwhelm logic is when bad decisions are make - self gratification at the expense of others, desire to do short term good that have terrible long term consequences, etc etc etc tend to be the abuses of emotion over logic. I'd think one can likely give the converse examples of over-prioritizing logic over emotion, but right now I'm drawing a blank. Each good case seems heartless until one thinks it all the way through (that whole long term vs short term thing keeps coming into play). However, I think logical decisions are required - by logic - to acknowledge that the race is emotional, so the logical path must include an element of how the populace reacts emotionally... I do think that emotions are a key piece of empathy - and empathy is required to fully understand and process information - so that's logical - as long as one knows that empathy is NOT equal to sympathy or agreement (which I observe to be the big trip up for many). ... Merrick Garland to be nominated by Obama for Scalia's SCOTUS seat
rehmwa replied to nolhtairt's topic in Speakers Corner
I find it idiotic - The Senate needs to do it's job. If he's truly just going to be a rubber stamp leftist vote on the court, then they have the ability to vote NO - formally, and under the current process 1 - Acknowledge the nomination 2 - hold interviews and hearings 3 - Vote (vote NO, heck - if he turns out to be objective and a good judge, maybe vote yes - who wants to take a chance on a Hillary or Trump nominee. They'll have 4 years to push the issue, Obama only has a few months to try to establish a judicial pick - if this one fails, he'll have to try to find someone more palatable to both sides instead of partisan games) Seems they don't have the balls to trust their own members on this. Heck - even going through the process instead of "we'll just ignore it until next spring" at least gives the illusion of taking process seriously. This is coming across as a tantrum, not as a "solid Republican stand". They can 'stand strong' by holding a hearing and voting. ... absolutely, if Hillary gets in, no way will she nominate someone even close to objective/center/constitutional If Trump gets in, what type of judge would he nominate (the "best" of judges, he has the 'best words' - but I'd like examples of actual people, good luck getting that) The Senate would do well to seriously review any candidate offered right now.....blind partisan rejection is just as stupid when Reps do it as Dems. but......we know how this turns out... ...
