  1. I approve of this summary As do I. That said, who would you support? I am leaning to the asshole, with clueless in a close second. the asshole is pretty much a social conservative - which we need like a swimming pool of shit. (Rubio starting to look that way too). I had to think about it a lot - In Minnesota - we survived Jesse Ventura relatively unscathed. And blunt speech is entertaining. Of them all, I'd think congress would feel enabled to actively throttle back the damage of Trump more than anyone - and with the least public backlash - and those things he's tries that are completely nuts, would be much easier to identify and block. He's not the 'lesser' of all the evils, but he would be the easiest for congress to stop the damage. Hillary and Cruz are so much business as usual that we'd continue to dive into the hell hole and wouldn't know the difference between them and our last two guys. Bernie just might get his way a couple of times - the world economy would pay the price for decades. I'm hoping for another choice still...... ... 5. Good post...but there is a right answer, it's that very tension you bring up. The bad answer is when that tension is out of whack. I wish for a better balance where that tension is useful and productive, rather than exploitative and subjective. I don't think I need to be careful wishing for that. Strangely enough, a desire for short term relief at the expense of the long term can be driven by a bad/abuse application of either philosophy. Take a look around and see which philosophy is driving the world to economic ruin - that'll let us know which way we are out of balance. I bet the hard cores will all come up with whatever conclusion they prefer. you know my bias. ... 6. Worth a listen? The initial series (11 books) are by far the best books I've ever read, I can't recommend them enough. The 4 that follow are ok, they're worth a read but aren't anywhere near the quality of the originals. If they were movies, they'd be sequels to get a paycheck instead of sequels to finish the story. Terry even says so in his blog. Richards and Kahlan's world is not safe - it just appeared that way at the end of the original series. He had intended to end it at Confessor, but decided to write the omen machine - I just started Severed souls this afternoon. Bring on the bringer of death. I assume there will now be a fourth definition of the title, and maybe a fifth. Cool - I'll queue the first one up. Haven't listened to anything that really grabbed me since the commonwealth saga. If you do, note that occasionally (frequently), the main character goes off on ten pages of social/political rant. The first couple are ok, after that, you can pretty much see it coming once or twice in each book - I just skip that dialogue and get back to the (generally excellent) story line. (I am very sympathetic to the content of the rant and what Goodkind wants us to infer about contemporary society as a reflection of his story line - but it gets really old regardless). It's a decent series though. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

  9. I'm ok that you seem to want to group people that have a true belief in Libertarianism in with Republicans (and Democrats) that try to use it as a crutch - or to rationalize specific positions that appear libertarian, though they support them to drive their own agendas, not personal freedom. I think it's over simplified and avoids the topic, but I'm not too surprised about the approach - classic SC. But the above....I don't really know where to start with this one.....There is such a HUGE distinction between upholding laws that protect us from others that are predators vs a couple parties that are trying to force feed the public social visions that are in direct conflict with the idea that we should be individually self deterministic and responsible for ourselves. I'll oversimplify to, just for the fun of it. Individualism: On one side: belief in individual liberty and self determination. with responsibility. For ourselves, but our own limits are defined by believing this applies to all others too. Nation of individuals, equality. vs Group focus: a couple of social philosophies that try to fit people into specific molds with blatant policies to specifically benefit specific classes at the direct expense of others. My problem is mostly that, at best, it pits subgroups against each other, while the positive vision requires a view that ALL of society is ONE group that should be optimized - good idea, but a FAIL in reality. It doesn't happen in real life This is where someone throws the 'all or nothing' strawman accusation at me. Let's just say we are dramatically lacking in proportion from that first group to offset those in the 2nd group - small tastes of the 2nd group has benefits, we are way beyond small tastes. those Dems and Reps that want to argue that "THEIR side truly represents the first group" need not apply. The response is canned laughter and applause - we've seen that skit. ... 10. From where I sit I can see no shortage of conservative fuck nuggets who want to tell everyone what is and is not allowed. Is that what you mean by "agenda"? This is when the majority of republicans proclaim their allegiance to libertarianism. You say that like it's a bad thing...... it's not a majority yet - nor even a majority of Dems yet either but they do too what's wrong with wanting to identify with NOT wanting government (you know, the 'fucknuggets' from both parties?) to tell everyone what is and isn't allowed - seems neither party in power has a place for people that believe that way not surprising that most people from both sides, when you actually ask them what they really want, talk a lot like libertarians - and they don't even realize it ... 11. What were the laws he was breaking? if none, then it's just him being an asshole and the committee is wasting our money - his competition will crush him in the market without congress's help if some, then charge him and try him and jail him either way, what's the point of the circus? just so some congressmen can put on a show of outrage for the public while they do even worse levels of economic rape to the taxpayers? bread and circuses ... 14. 1776 was the year we declared independence. It wasn't recognized (e.g., the British government stopped fighting to get us back under control) until the Treaty of Paris in 1783. It took us until 1787 to ratify a constitution. So, I would have considered that a trick question by the interviewer. Of course, I couldn't reference 1783 readily (had to look that one up), so my answer would have been my first sentence above (emphasis included). quick!! shut off the camera - this doesn't confirm our hypothesis so delete the interview!! ... 19. Dekker - Billvon stated it for me after you postulated (falsely) an absolutist position on my part. Seriously, if the choice were to end up, say, Bernie vs Cruz, in what way would a guy like Rand (or his Dad even) be less absolutist than those guys? In what way would a libertarian president be absolutist more so than a hard liner Rep or Dem executive (note - with a Rep/Dem legislature and social agenda (Left vs Right) litmus processes for judicial?) (hopefully we take the best parts of each - seems we think/intend we're taking the best parts usually and find out later that we're bad at the selection process - usually in terms of taking short term relief at the expense of the long term) ... 22. OK - so they interview 200 respondents. -- 6 are completely oblivious -- 190 (math error fixed - credit to Stumpy) knew the answers and thought it a bit overly simple -- 4 are go getters the crew had to run away from because they went into incredible details, knew the histories behind all the questions and wanted an "A" for the effort. So they make a video and show the 6 'obliviots' So it's a different conclusion for me - the 'crew' wanted to highlight the ignorance of today's youth, they went and took the data they had, and then cherry picked the results that proved their conclusion despite the overwhelming evidence it's the 'new' scientific method (really it's the old one, but now we're just more obtuse about it) 1 - facts and data be damned, I want to put out a message even if I have to manufacture a 'Cause' to be outraged about 2 - self involvement and narcissism are the words of today 3 - everyone gets an A - do what feels good (or - throw all that out and a couple kids wanted to make something entertaining. 24. I agree, if it was fixed, then the coin flip would automatically land in favor of Al Gore and Al Franken "In favor" would be one of the following: Heads, tails, on edge, lost, Quarter, Dime, Penny, Nickel,....Coin, hanging chad, or any type of ballet with a write in response. Also, if something other than a coin is tossed, that would be interpreted by an impartial group of 2 dems and a rep with a mandatory interpretation of vote for Franken. I believe if the coin were to spontaneously just hover, then a reflip is required after adding three dead people to the voter roles. I think Seriously, it's Iowa, say you'll keep the corn subsidies and 90% of the people will bake you a pie. It's not like it's Chicago or anything ... 25. If you REALLY want a "none of the above" large reaction, I'd think Donald vs Hillary would get more traction. Since they are both so hated by a large segment of both sides of the aisle. Bernie will get sympathy because, IMO, at least he's sincere and well intentioned about his agenda - he's not personally hated, just his philosophy causes terror and despair in the hopes of thinkers. People will respond to the sincerity, even if it would cause world wide economic devastation of kind only imagined about in a JJ Abrahmshamalan mind. People are funny that way. Of all the candidates, I'm scared of Hillary, Bernie, Donald, and Cruz. In a very serious way (other Reps I'm scared of never got very far in the first place). So I'm pretty much screwed no matter what happens unless something changes in a big way in either/both parties - not freakin likely. ...
