  2. Where I jump there are some issues with people landing in different directions. The swoopers sometimes intentionally land downwind so you cant count on them setting the 'first man down sets the pattern' rule as they often intentionally fly downwind. Thus, in general I think most people try to land in the same direction as the first person, but that does not always happen when the winds are light and variable. When the winds are more steady or calm, then everyone follows the same pattern. But once they start shifting direction, people start landing in different directions. Landing out is not really an easy option. We have some outs, but they are limited and small. Some of them are private property and are reserved for legitimate emergencies only. It's nice to be able to jump at an easy DZ where you can 'for fucks sake not have to land at the landing area all the time,' but at some more challenging DZs it's not that simple. I am not sure what the answer is. Having a large orange arrow on the ground sure would be nice. *** The answer is that your S&TA and DZO need to figure their shit out before someone gets killed. You have the option of jumping somewhere else. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  3. I'm split on that because his job was to act as a back-up to developing technology, not to dick around on his phone and not watch the road. Granted, I said he probably couldn't have done anything but that doesn't change the job he was supposed to be doing. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  4. I see the analogy a bit differently: In my analogy the parachutist was wearing an aad and had it turned on. Sure he didn't pull his handles, and yes he impacted on a 500ft hill, so the aad would not have saved him, but it still should have fired. Ok. And you did watch the video? If so, then we're just seeing the same thing but taking away a very different impression. Which is cool. Personally I don't see any way a machine moving at that speed had time to vary its course or speed enough to save the woman from herself. But that's just my impression. She was walking in the dark patch too, extra hard to make out objects when the lighting changes like that. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  5. The tech needs to be good enough that someone can fall asleep at the wheel with headphones on because that's exactly how this will be used. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  6. Things like FB allow a free service in order to data mine your life. This should be not surprise to anyone. That doesn't make it any more or less ethical and your data needs to be used for ethical purposes. I think everyone on facebook or what has a phone has been prompted to import their contacts or friend list one way or the other and never read the EUL. None of this should be any surprise. 7. I wonder if when Jesus's mother saw him on the cross she thought to herself, "Maybe I should've just told him that I got preggers screwing around with the neighbor." "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  8. MARK MY WORDS: My take on self driving cars is that people are going to become accustomed to the car driving itself and during instances where they're supposed to be controlling it they'll have a mental lapse and not steer it. We will definitely see a lawsuit or too from someone claiming that it wasn't clear enough for them to know the car wasn't driving itself. 9. I'm with you on that. Not a chance. The would be a dead person any way you cut it. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  10. Just the book of Job is enough, he allows a person to be tortured and kills his whole family just so he can prove to the devil that this guy will still believe and love God after all the pain he's gone through. I cannot believe that any God who advocates for what is just will do that. It's one of many inconsistencies with the Christian/Jewish message that at least force you to say that some of these books are poorly written campfire stories. 11. That's just stupid. They're a company and can do what they want but that's stupid. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  12. And some of those weapons are really damn cool! And the girls aren't bad either. Girls??? I don't think Bob is going to the same video website we are. Probably wonders why all the videos end with the girl taking off her clothing and and they never fix the TV. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  13. Jumpers that go from DZs with set pattern to tetrahedron can have this issue too. Yes, definitely important to know before you board. The way it works at my DZ, set pattern, if we change the landing direction it's usually because we spent three loads doing downwinders on light/variable days and it's just damn obvious that it's time to change it for the rest of the day. 14. CNN is nearly all Trump nearly all the time. It is very true. They are clearly as anti-Trump as Fox is pro Trump. I agree with them, but that is beside the point. I let my Washington Post subscription expire because of that, I got so sick of seeing BS about Trump while there are real issues going on in the world. I go to Reuters and BBC now, was going to get a WSJ subscription but I don't want to put money in Murdoch's pocket. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  15. I don't think that was getting back on topic. Haha. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  16. What's the issue? If they want to protest something what's wrong with that? "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  17. A friend of mine pulled his gun out after two guys approached him and one pulled a gun. I let him know how incredibly stupid that was but it worked in his favor. It's very likely the gun was fake or the person who was dumb enough to commit a robbery was also smart enough to instantly recognize that he didn't want to pull the trigger and guessed correctly that my friend wouldn't pull the trigger. 18. It's not the fall, but the sudden stop that gets you. I've read that a Norway Spruce is the best tree for slowing you down safely. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  19. But you're also unwilling to listen to the students who ACTUALLY got shot at or were ACTUALLY shot. Did you Actually get shot at? Or are you just trolling. No, I'm just calling you out for saying these students are pawns and shouldn't be taken seriously. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  20. Ha, I actually stopped reading before the "no outs" clause. We've dealt with this at my DZ and we have a gigantic quantity of grass around the main landing area so it frustrates me to no end when the landing area gets dicey and everyone piles in as if they don't have all the alternatives in the world. So, land in the direction you decided upon when you were on the ground. It will only compound the error by repeating what someone else did. 22. Their hope is that people will hear their message and take action. What do you think of that? What do I think of that? Hmmmm, well I guess you can hope for anything you want! Believe me, didn't think you would hear an single thing. So sad. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  23. LAND FUCKING ELSEWHERE IN THE DIRECTION DECIDED ON THE GROUND. FOR FUCK'S SAKE, PEOPLE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO LAND IN THE LANDING AREA ALL THE TIME. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
  24. For full disclosure, is this the actual person involved in Trump's campaign or is some guy from another sector. We've seen plenty of videos of employees who's work has nothing to do with a particular subject matter but they're taking as the example that proves the point. Recent examples have been NASA employees who don't believe in global warming or network employees who say their network makes up things. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
