  1. Quite possibly because he bragged about it to them, directly or indirectly threatened people at work are other alternatives. I think with news there is often alot more to it than articles state (think the parachute failed to open as an example) Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  2. umm lets see the guy is in a dispute with his employer and goes out and buys multiple guns. I am willing to bet that what he has omitted from his story is that he made violent threats against the employer (or someone else) and that a complaint was made to the police. Lets face it a-lot of people make stupid threats when they are angry or upset - most people take them as idle words but not everyone does. On the other hand in the US you tend to love your profiling so maybe he just fit the profile. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  3. As any racing yachtsman knows, the DOWNWIND COMPONENT of velocity of a sailboat on a reach can exceed the windspeed. Consequently even if the race includes a leg that is directly downwind, they will usually sail some 30 degrees off the direct downwind direction because the net result is a faster leg. A propeller is just like a rotating sail. You don't even have to analyze a propeller in detail (which is very difficult). Imagine you have an ''actuator disk" that can change the momentum of the air, linked to a reversible motor/generator wired to another motor/generator attached to the wheels. Can you arrange things so that the change in momentum of the air results in extracting enough energy from the wind to provide the force necessary to keep the entire thing going when going downwind faster than the wind? The answer is: yes , you can. thanks excellent answer - along with Bill's explanation earlier in the thread. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  4. Tend to is the problem. My company was just acquired and they are not keeping the cream of the crop. If so, they'd be firing themselves, not telling all of my people on the West coast they need to either move to Delaware or Singapore or leave. Your voluntary turnover (as opposed to those you kick out because they aren't cutting it) says quite a lot about the company. And it's expensive to the company. Short term contract to hire (3-6 months) is one way to address your issue. Totally agree and short term contracts is EXACTLY the model that we have adopted. After 3 months we either offer full time or simply don't renew. On the issue of your company I know that I am making HUGE generalisations here and we are on opposite sides of the world - but a friends company went bust recently he and his top engineers were employed within the week, the weaker members are still un-employed 4 months later. Lastly Harvard business review just had an article on pretty much exactly this topic. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. It is very difficult because while I fully symathise with un-employeed people, without exception everyone that I have hired as a business owner who has been un-employeed has been a lemon. While not an "official" policy we now tend to prefer currently employeed people - unfortunately it is a simple fact of life that companies tend to retain the cream of the crop so if you are recruiting for excellence it skews your requirements. You can't measure turnover (in a small business) as a measure of happiness - we've had a high turnover but I simply refuse to "carry" people who think a paycheck is a "right" regardless of their contribution. We are slowly building a core of high quality individuals - it takes time and unfortunately an interview doesn't really tell you half as much as you need to know. 6. Actually as a non-american I found it really offensive. I am sure Hitler also believed in German "exceptional-ism" THAT is why people tend to hate the US. Not jealousy but the outright arrogance that some US spokes people portray. I also find it very telling when someone can only attack other people - without providing "value" in their own right. Come on "European Proffessors" screwed the US - geez man I think thats giving Kallend a bit too much credit Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  7. Where is there even a hint that he is kidding? He appears to be as serious as the nutters who set up that Disney-style creationism theme park. Maybe they are just kidding too. And the 911 truthers, and Moon hoaxers, and Holocaust deniers, and Planet X crowd; yeah, they are all just pulling our chain to see how long we go along thinking they are serious. 1) The amount of swearing for a start 2) At least once or twice he struggles to keep a straight face Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  8. Georger - I think that you mean HF gets transmitted further than its theoretical line of site range - through reflections from the ionosphere. With VHF there are a few crazy people that play with "moon bounce" where they effectively do the same thing. One thing to remember with radio range is that when airborne that becomes the "effective antenna height" and this radically changes the range. All of your guys thoughts skipped on tx power which is also part of the mix. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  9. But the prop, which is always moving crosswind does still feel a relative wind. Once the vehicle...and the prop...reach wind speed there is no air moving across the prop. None. Zero. Nada. Nil. No air moving across the prop means no energy conversion. The prop can only move crosswind if the entire vehicle moves crosswind. That would negate any claims of DWFTTW. Someone call Kallend and ask him to get his arse out of speakers corner for 5 mintes I have no problem that relative winds can be used to increase speed - but to me the vector sum of +1 and -1 = 0 which is roughly what they are contradicting. 10. This has really been bothering me as I can normally grasp engineering principles fairly quickly. I don't believe that they are going directly down wind. The models on the treadmill had me going for a while but I believe they are misunderstanding the principles at work (on the little models). The treadmill is driving the wheels in effect what we are seeing is a gearing principle at work. That said I am not a sailor and so it may be that I simply don't understand a key principle involved somewhere. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  11. what are the odd's that he had a tasty work colleague and needed a good excuse? Me thinks about 90%, and its a good thing that he wasn't an arse man Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  12. It depends. My (limited and very general) understanding is that they are best for low speed and tip-overs. They mount to the frame, so if they are too sturdy, a hard impact can bend the frame. So they are designed to snap off in a really hard impact. For specific info on the R6, you might ask These Guys. And I asked Nataly for a pic of her in her gear back when she got the bike. And I'm still waiting Thanks - and why are you asking for pics of her IN her gear I think a picture of a hot chick on a motorbike is better done without clothes on! 13. I am interviewing hot islamic women to work with me and need to be sure that I comply with the appropriate traditions. I guess that I will oblige prior to interview so that we avoid any complaints of sexual harrassment http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/6681511.stm PS Topics like this are really difficult - technically SC material I suppose but I doubt anyone in SC appreciates boobs, so try and avoid the fairly obvious route this could go - for the sake of those who appreciate them Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  14. I'm confused am I black and Obama white? 1) Cause he's getting richer and I'm getting poorer. 2) He was born in a rich white man's country I was born in Africa But when I look in the mirror I am this pinkish/white colour - do you think there is something wrong with my eyesight? 15. That's where they came from, but they are pretty widely used these days. They really aren't much different than the "crash bars" on some of the older bikes (functionally anyway). An investment of a hundred bucks or so can save a lot more then that in just a simple tip-over. It's amazing how much the plastic fairings on sportbikes can cost. Just out of curiousity (and not to hijack the thread) but I do you have any idea of how much protection they provide on an R6? My new bike is sweet but I was cleaning it this weekend and in order to keep the weight down ALL the plastic is paper thin and it flexes at the slightest touch PS Nat the Ninja 250 is a very nice bike. WTF? Rant...

Freaking muppet supplied us will all the source code - his parting "act" was to parse the source code and search and replace removing all whitespace and carriage return line feeds. There are so many things I'd like to do to him -- but anyway on the bright side I know that I will never employ such a freak again (there CAN'T be anyone worse out there) Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

    WTF? Rant...

I run an engineering business and I needed some work done by a contractor who is offsite. It involved developing a small custom piece of linux software to run on a server. Anyway the guy continually protested that all software "bugs" were non-existent and has spent the last month where I have had to expend significant effort testing his code to be able to isolate the exact bug. He would then log in and fix it - and then DENY that he had made any changes. The f*cking idiot doesn't know quite as much as one of my engineers and although he was falsifying the command history he didn't know enough to do it fully and properly. 20. It's not unreasonable for whuffos to presume DZ and the TI are part of a single entity. They'd have no idea how much the DZ pays the TIs, nor is it their social responsibility to find out. But more to the point: tandems aren't cheap, and $200 is a real chunk of change for a lot of people. For someone on a tight budget who's just experienced the sticker shock of paying for a tandem jump, it probably just doesn't occur to them to shell out some more money. I agree. While I sympathise that being a TI may not be a well paying job the actual cost of a tandem is alot of money. Customer service is not something that is natural to many of us and I imagine a DZ could do well to train its staff, and work hard on "image" - this is addressed to the OP by the way. 21. Around where I live that is usually waaaaay more dangerous than doing 66 on an A road or 77 on a dual... 60+ 10% = 66! and 70 + 10% = 77 Like I said I don't break the limit by more than 10%. The 60 comes from the fact that at the moment if I met a corner at 66 I'll become a statistic. That said on our local back roads (Chilterns) I would be happy feeling confident at 60 and not crapping myself that I am going to wind up on the wrong side of the road or in a hedge. 22. thanks everyone for replies. IAM was someone that I couldn't remember the name of. Our local police do a riding course once a year but I have already been on it and they prefer fresh blood
  23. Does anyone have any suggestions on who the best "advanced riders" courses are? I am thinking of ROSPA but I don't know anyone who has done there advanced riders course and would like feedback. My new toy is fantastic but 5 years on a Fazer hadn't prepared me for the utter madness that the R6 is! I can tell that I am under-cornering and my riding skills need to go up a notch if I am going to keep her nice and shiny. And just in case anyone suggests it - I am not interested in track day type training as I am not going to be taking up track days. Believe it or not I don't actually break the speed limit by more than 10% (still have a clean license) and on country roads here you can have an absolute blast at 60MPH. 25. for goodness sake - lets talk about BBQ - I am hungry. To through in my lot, I am going to say that Southern Africa have the best BBQ (but better call it by its "proper" name Braai! Lots of steak and boerewors with decent beer! PS my best braai experiences have been "in the bush" with logs/folding chairs for seating and no porcelain in sight!
