Books that I have read recently and enjoyed: Shop craft as soulcraft - Interesting view on the modern world. Crazy Storm Survival Amazing true story of an 11 year old surviving a plane crash and walking out. Bridge Across Forever - Read this book about 15 years ago and due for a re-read. Illusions Same author and I enjoyed this to. Other than that Scott Peck(Road less Travelled is interesting, so it People of the Lie), and books about a major recent military event from various perspectives including an interesting book by Hans Blix. Which the teacher can then feed into the computer, so it, in stead of he/her, can check it for spelling and grammar. You know, in light of efficiency. I had to hand in my essays in long hand, I don't see why that would now no longer be possible. probably would improve some of the penmanship of today's students. if the teacher uses the spell check then you could remove them from the loop - efficiency! You have a certain point; but there's a flip-side to the same dynamic that I noticed raising my own kids: by the time they're nearing the end of high school, kids of the current generation have developed far, far more adept and sophisticated skills in research-based scholarship than their pre-Internet parents had at the same age. Being in a career myself where I've done a ton of both library-book and online research, I can state that online research is often far more efficient and expansive than library research is. Of course, if someone else does the research for you (or if there's too much "collaboration"), that's different. But my kids did their online research themselves (we monitored their homework, etc. closely), and by the time they were age 18 they had far more expert research skills than my wife or I ever had until we were at least in our late 20s with far more formal education. I see that paying off for them today as college students. I fully agree that the ability to research correctly is a critical skill. One of the things that I am really grateful to my parents for is that they bought a typewriter for us kids when I was about 10 and we were not allowed to use it until we could touch type. I have pretty much lost the art of writing by hand and when I do it is barely legible. My daughter is now 14 and has used computers since she was a toddler - you have kids it is pretty much a full time job checking that she is not "cheating" at homework. We do have a fantastic parental key logger installed and it drives her nuts that I can prove her cheating and on-line activity (right down to screen shots). That has proved an excellent deterrent. *** Anyway back to the subject of being a Mod here - you need to be insane for a start. Over in the DB Cooper thread someone suggested that Quade "sell" printed copies of the thread. If Bonfire is for boobies and SC for arguments the Cooper thread is definitely for looneys and being stuck moderating that I am pretty sure you end up mad. Long hand should be the norm. Allowing word processed homework actively encourages kids to simply cut and paste material from websites. Believe me we have a constant battle with our 14 year old daughter where homework is done collaboratively via facebook with substantial cut and paste from websites. I think comprehension and self discipline are far more important than spelling. Some time ago I came across the following. Yes quite frequently but not for driving, I prefer to keep my eyes on the road and let the GPS take me to where I am going (even if it is not the ideal route). But I use maps for radio sighting surveys and being printed and spread out on a desk makes them a hell of lot easier to use than a PC. Also have started taking the boys camping and we don't use GPS when walking but a map and compass. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Guessing that could be a problem with screening. ? Screening? I guess you don't travel much - generally carrying someone in your bag is discouraged Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Should the government get your paycheck first?
nigel99 replied to SkyPiggie's topic in Speakers Corner
This was a proposal that was mean't for internal discussion only and is clearly not workable. The biggest problem the government has is that taxes are the first thing that companies stop paying in hard times and when cash flow is a problem (I run a business and have been there!). The UK revenue loses lots of money when companies go bust and this proposal would prevent that happening. The idea of paying gross is ideal as the government could then chase individuals directly - and in the UK it saves about 12% of your wage bill if you can engineer things in this way and stay legal as our national insurance requires the employer to provide for the 11 or 12% that is deducted from the employee and then to effectively match that amount again. I think some clarification might be in order. I was suggesting adding a unique key to the mysql DB based on a combination of the two data fields. (You have to make sure that the formatting of the combined field works for the timestamp format that you use, accounting for padding of spaces or 0) The DB then processes the requests and ensures only one entry for the key. I was not suggesting that you use the scripting language or a cgi language to process the determination of uniqueness. Also, just because the two data fields that you are looking at match, does not mean the rest of the record is identical. . sorry my bad communications skills at work. I understood what you were saying and through in the extra noise about moving from PHP... thanks Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

thanks that sounds about right as an approach. We are in the process of trashing the PHP and moving across to C++ as PHP is a crap language for what we are doing anyway. We should be able to tweak things to make the unique key from the two data fields. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Can anyone help with a MySQL and PHP query? I have a PHP script that takes a data stream and after parsing it inserts the results into a MySQL table. We need to check whether the data is unique based on an address and timestamp combination, so my current solution is to query the database with the timestamp and address and if a match is found discard the duplicate data. The problem is that this only works where the data has a delay between duplicate events. It is like there is some sort of write buffer that causes the query to return false when it should be true... Any idea's welcome

Ah, but mine's "anatomically correct". I still have to decide on an alias for when I go underground. Anatomically correct Mohammed? You have been beaten to it Mohammed NSFW Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -
Ha, money doesn't make us hornier, it just lets us shop a little harder for it. After my dads third marriage he decided to go the "rent a chick" route cause it was cheaper than wives sitting at home spending his money and then getting 1/2 when the divorce came. Unfortunately the people Shah describe do exist. My mum tolerated my dad's girlfriends while he was wealthy - it is amazing how quickly when financial troubles hit she became disgusted with his lifestyle and left. That's it. The tower started to rock to one side as if it was going to fold but the structure was too weak to support the movement and collapsed at the pivot point, which stopped the lateral forces and the downforce predominated. Great find, bill! It also shows that it's not a solid block. But did they find any thermite!? Were the blocks in freefall? you are all missing the point - it took 2 impacts and not 1 for the blocks to fall so it proves nothing Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

British teenager 'banned from US over drunken email to Barack Obama'
nigel99 replied to remibond's topic in Speakers Corner
it seems an over-reaction to me. When I was a teenager we did stupid crap. I would hate to think that he has destroyed his chances of ever going to the US over a juvenile activity. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -

Do a search on two's complement. What you are looking for is not that difficult (I have kids to deal with now) but if you don't have it solved by tomorrow I will look up my notes. There is a simple trick of invert and add 1 or something similar as this is from memory. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Hmmm, so someone that has compiled a peer reviewed journal on the subject is wrong while another that compares a sky scraper to a toe and a hammer is correct? I work in engineering (not mechanical) and some of the worst people we have had to work with have been full time academics with no real world experience. I haven't bothered to read any of the sources of yours so I can't comment. I saw the WTC fall live on television - it is simply not possible for a government to carry out a conspiracy on that scale in front of multiple television crews. At least there is one person that understands. how can the dynamic load be greater than the static load, when the static load is much much greater and much stronger than the dynamic load, can you ellaborate on that please. Force = Mass x acceleration. When the top was stationary the force was lower than once the collapse started. Jakee's example with the hammer is spot on. The person who you are referencing is misunderstanding basic principles of physics. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

He may be correct but until he has seen the chute how can he know? All he can do is guess. Just looking at the chute, the way it lays etc, does it look more like nylon or silk? Personally I dont care which is correct. Several articles say the FBI got experts to examine the chute beyond anything Cossey said or did ... it wouldnt take an expert (or even a good novice) 2 seconds to know if its silk or nylon ... I don't think you need to "see" something to know the answer if you are an expert. For example we "know" that any personal computer built after 1980 does not contain valves. I don't think you need to see inside to be pretty sure that statement is valid. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

For my birthday I got a brand new R6 from my wife as a surprise that I totally wasn't expecting. I was the envy of the bike shop. I should probably point out that we only have joint bank accounts and there is no concept of "my" or "her" money (well maybe it is all her money)...
