Jeez what a frigging irritating thread title - I keep reading it as "desserts" and wondering what the hell pudding has to do with Speaker Corner Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

It is really very clever - didn't know that they had that level of logic. It doesn't just push up and then down - if you notice about half way through it leaves it up and then remembers to only push down. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

I partly agree with you. But I still believe that a huge number of biker accidents could have been prevented through better riding (regardless of fault). When you are filtering through traffic 40MPh faster than the cars you can appear out of nowhere. A recent article in one of the biker mags pointed out that on a bike we have very little distraction. Car drivers are busy talking on their phones, playing with the radio, setting the aircon and worrying about the cup of starbucks on their lap. It is no excuse but it is a reality. Not to mention I have seen people getting road head (M25 in rush hour traffic) and a mate nearly got taken out by a wanker - literally not figuratively speaking, the guy had a porn mag on the steering wheel Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

I ride bikes and I think you are partly correct. First of all modern cars have huge struts with all the airbag and safety stuff - if people do not make a concious effort it is quite easy for a bike to be "hidden". Secondly a huge number of bike and car accidents (at least here in the UK) while the biker might "technically" be in the right, they are driving abnormally. Good examples are filtering through traffic (especially near intersections). Higher speed and not driving on the crest of the road are others. Lastly (and this might not apply to non-sports bikes) but rapid acceleration can be very deceiving. I know that if I really hammer the bike I can go from a red traffic light and be well over 30MPH at the other side of the junction - I have seen drivers get caught out by this. Mentally drivers see you "stopped" and they don't realise that in 2 or 3 seconds you are doing the national speed limit (60-70). But you're alluding to the assertion that crime goes up with the rate of single parenthood. Polygamy would involve the parental count going up from 2, not down. If 2 parents means less crime, doesn't 3 do even better? No - I am alluding to the assertion that crime goes up with broken and/or non traditional homes. I disagree with the non-traditional homes aspect. In the UK the shortage of housing is not driven by population growth or immigration but largely by the breakdown of families (so 1 family ends up occupying 2 homes). The stress on finances in these situations can be immense. Add to this the fact that many people don't have extended family to lean on for support and you have a very high stress situation that people are living in. To add some perspective my parents shared our home with a single mom and her 2 kids when I was growing up. Effectively they pooled resources. We kids grew pretty close and are still much like brothers and sisters 20 years later. I believe the sharing was driven by religious motives (help the needy) rather than sexual and my parents certainly portray the view that they would be shocked if people thought there was anything else to their relationship (not that I would be bothered). I guess that as crime rates in Saudi are lower than the US maybe it is because they allow polygamy I can't think of any reason that polygamy would have any affect on crime rates. I personally don't care it polygamy is legal or not. I don't even understand the whole issue at all. Why bother to get married! If you want to have 5 wives why go through the trouble of marrying each one! There is no law against sharing your life with multiple women. I was being sarcastic regarding crime rates based on the prison fact. I agree with your view, although I think it goes both ways. If men are allowed multiple partners so are women. I like marriage, and think of it as a commitment to my partner. To me it shows I really do want to spend the rest of my life with her. But I don't believe that 1 person can necessarily meet all the needs of another, and therefore multiple partners can be healthy. I think we tend to view intimate relationships between adults through a sexual context and that is part of the problem (not that I am precluding sex with multiple partners). They were talking about something similar on the radio this morning. They discussed the behaviour of kids from families with step-parents or single parents versus traditional family units. I think that it is a flawed assumption, chances are a child with a step-parent has had at least 1 dishonest or badly adjusted parent (divorce through cheating, abuse etc). If you take into a account families where the couples are still together there is a good chance that they communicate with each other, work through problems and are generally healthier mentally and socially. I guess that as crime rates in Saudi are lower than the US maybe it is because they allow polygamy Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Here is a thought that puzzles me. Why do so many people feel that anything other than monogamy is a problem? Even in the bible polygamy was fairly common and it appears to be a modern moralistic view that monogamy is the "correct" way of life (or as my dad puts it serial monogamy). I don't have a problem with open marriages (or relationships), and frankly if either party has a higher sex drive and there is no cheating involved why not? Or simply if the individual involved likes variety. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

I wouldn't want you to leave, rhys, you're some of the finest entertainment that I see here. If we all agreed on every forum topic then there would not be any debate, and hence nothing to read here. As to nigel99's question; After X-many years of SC, those regular topics have been debated to death. There is very little new material to cover. If you miss the old threads, go back and read them, because re-posting an old topic will most likely produce a similar thread to the previous one on the same topic, interspersed with a few posts of "OMG ! not this again...". Indeed, some comments seen here can be insulting, but keep in mind that many debates have nowhere else to go when it emerges that the main parties (no pun intended) are on completely different levels of logic, knowledge and pragmatic reality. It's oil and water. The last word at that point is either; Remain silent, which variably allows the other party to note your lack of rebuttal and assert "victory". ...or Make some comment to discredit the other party which, if valid or even plausible, renders that party's comments on the thread moot. Such comments are, by definition, insulting. If it stays within forum rules, then it's valid debating tactics. Forum members who repeatedly dive into the ground will inevitably get dirt on them. Sure the old topics have been debated to death. I mean the summary of people in SC is Christians play with guns, Muslims play with bombs, Athiests play with themselves and agnostics don't exist. I guess that the world has changed and that there are currently not many (if any) significant world events. Remember pre-Iraq war days? I remember Rhino and company with the whole "glass parking lot" debate. It was interesting and current in that feelings ran very high. Obama on your side and Cameron on our side are pretty laid back uncontroversial figures (Bush managed to unite the world against him), and Tony Blair did well as his poodle. The financial situation doesn't seem to raise much controversy - perhaps we need a few bankers in SC It's entertaining when a wild and whacky theory is thrown in the mix, but not for long. Interesting. In the UK over the past 5 years there has been a alot of so called specialisation of NHS hospitals. I live in a town of about 150 000 and our hospital has had the A&E department closed and relocated ~20 miles away, same with maternity and a couple of other functions. I must live in a town full of arse holes because they have kept the renal unit . So now we are in a position where air ambulances are being used more (traffic over a 20 mile period can make this trip an hour long). Interesting as we actually went into 2 hospitals and both had the piano. Coming from the UK and our NHS believe me these hospitals were a culture shock. I never thought of the fact that Starbucks etc could be renting floor space - it makes sense. On business I tend to stay at Hyatt or Marriott Courtyard hotels and both of these hospitals put them to shame for flourish and quality. I am fairly curious to see how typical they are, as much as I dislike hospitals. So do you mind your healthcare costs paying for the frills or would you prefer lower premiums and less frills? I even consulted a British->Merkun online dictionary. It gave me back the same phrase I put in. I think you just made that up to mess with us. It's wrong I tell ya... http://www.crackingideas.com/ jeez dude that is sad You visit the wallace and grommet website Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQFKtI6gn9Y "No, you want 12A next door." Lets go for the course of 10 Well if anyone is interested. I spent last week in a US hospital (for work) and I was amazed at the extravagance. The place had a baby grand piano that played itself, a lobby like a 5 star hotel and Starbucks, Subways downstairs. It also had a huge fountain indoors. It really made me think about why US healthcare costs are so high. Do you really think that hospitals should be "wasting" money on extravagances? I miss the old religious, evolution, gun debates that used to run with lots of different opinion and opposing viewpoints. SC seems to have descended into a tit for tat insult forum. Even JR hasn't dug up dirt on England for a few months Any idea's for a good debate? Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Ideas on making sure nobody goes missing at major DZs?
nigel99 replied to BillyVance's topic in Safety and Training
Very simply there are personal locating beacons that exist for walkers/climbers etc. DZ's could rent them out as they cost between $200 and $500 to buy. They are not dependant on cellphone coverage and pretty much link directly into the emergency services. Ok it won't work if you are totally incapacitated. For example http://sportys.com/PilotShop/product/14501 GPS transmission/RFID are impractical when you look at the big picture. You will either need automatic activation(what would be the triggers), battery life will be a problem, radio coverage is a problem and in low volumes they don't come cheap. I think that the best way is people power at manifest. People have mentioned how skydivers don't bother to check back in. Make it a $100 deposit or similar that is effectively lost if a search results and I am sure many of those problems would disappear. All you would need is a couple of numbered plastic disks that are handed out at manifest and returned there - failure to do so (in a timely manner) results in losing your deposit. I don't know. I have no problem with porn or people pushing boundaries, but is it right to deliberately offend people? This is probably in the same league as Mohammed with a bomb turban which doesn't make it right or wrong just an observation. I have known or know 3 hookers. What I don't like is the general attitude that the women are being "taken advantage of" as a generalisation (I know that in some cases it is true) 1) Mother-in-law used to be a hooker. Her logic was she liked sex and money so combine her interests. The problem is that her children got seriously neglected/abused in the process. 2) Similar story with a women who I went to university with. She liked sex and the money and hated the normal 9-5 so she switched trades. 3) A friends mom was a hooker when I was about 17. Her mom seemed to enjoy it and they had a nice house. I am not sure why people have a problem with it, I don't. My cousin got into serious trouble when she was about 11 or 12. She had to say in class what she wanted to do when she grew up and she mean't to say "prosecutor" but said prostitute. when my dad was in the airforce he got a bollocking because of the following: Pilot: Engine refused to start My Dad: Spoke nicely to engine and it agreed to start. I believe this kind of banter is pretty common, and I am pretty sure my dad didn't invent that line. I can't remember some of the others that they came out with.
